Аннотация: A microwave detector based on a self-sustained oscillator circuit is proposed as a means to investigate the real and imaginary components of the dielectric permittivity of liquid crystals in external electric and magnetic fields. Results are given for measurements of a 500 MHz oscillator frequency for two types of nematic crystals, 5CBP and MBBA. Fundamental regularities are identified in the behavior of the microwave dielectric permittivity of samples in electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that the minimum of the high-frequency dielectric loss in liquid crystals correspond to a situation in which the long axes of the molecules are oriented parallel to the direction of the microwave electric field. Аннотация: A total complex resistance (impedance) method is used to study the electrophysical characteristics of (BeO + TiO2)-ceramics modified with TiO2 micro- and nanoparticles in an amount of 30 wt.% (BT-30). Dispersion of the actual ε′ and imaginary ε′′ components of the dielectric permittivity component and specific conductivity in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz from room temperature to the boiling point of liquid nitrogen are determined. High values of ε′ and ε′′ in the low-frequency range are typical for structurally inhomogeneous materials due to the accumulation of electric charges at the surface and within microcrystals. Two dielectric relaxation processes associated with electrical conductivity within the body and at the surface of ceramics are detected for the first time. An increase in conductivity with an increase in the microwave field frequency above 1 MHz is explained by the appearance of a current relaxation component. The activation energy of the static resistance of ceramic specimens is determined as a function of the reciprocal temperature that depends little on the weight content of TiO2 nanoparticles and varies in the range of 0.024 – 0.10 eV This also confirms the existence of two independent conduction processes, weakly dependent on the nanoparticle content in the ceramic composition. With placement of ceramic in a high-frequency electric field, spatial charges are formed, the field of which contributes to creation of additional polarization and dielectric losses.

Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the dielectric and optical parameters for a 5-propyl-2-(p-cyanophenyl)-pyridine (3CP) liquid crystal are investigated in the vicinity of the nematic-isotropic phase transition. The dielectric spectra of the 3CP compound in the crystalline, nematic, and isotropic phases are measured in the frequency range 1-1000 MHz, and the Debye approximations of the measured spectra are obtained. Analysis of the dependence of the static permittivity on the director orientation with respect to the direction of the electric pump field demonstrates that the angle between the dipole moment and the long axis of the molecule is approximately equal to 15degrees. Аннотация: Parallel and perpendicular components of the dielectric constant for 5CB nematic liquid crystal are measured in a relaxation region. Two frequencies f(1) approximate to 30 and f(2) approximate to 350 MHz are determined at which the inversion of the dielectric anisotropy sign is observed. It is shown that the observed sizable high-frequency shift of f(2) with respect to the value calculated according the Debye theory is caused by the dielectric resonance near the relaxation region. Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of investigations into the dielectric properties of liquid crystals embedded in polycapillary matrices and describes a technique for their measurement. It has been revealed that the chemical structure of the rigid core and the length of mobile alkyl groups of liquid-crystal molecules of the alkylcyanobiphenyl group substantially affect the equilibrium configuration of the liquid-crystal director in capillaries. The reorientation of liquid-crystal molecules embedded in capillaries in the nematic phase under the influence of an external magnetic field has been investigated.

Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of investigations into the influence of variations in the chemical composition of the aromatic core of cyano-containing molecules of liquid crystals on their dielectric properties in the frequency range 1-2000 MHz. It is shown that the dispersion of the longitudinal permittivity is adequately described by the sum of two Debye processes with different weighting factors and relaxation times. The frequency dependence of the transverse permittivity is well approximated by the Debye process with a continuous distribution of relaxation times in a specified range. It is established that the replacement of one benzene ring in the biphenyl core of the 5CB liquid-crystal molecule by a cyclohexane (or bicyclooctane) fragment leads to a considerable decrease in both relaxation times for the longitudinal permittivity, a change in the low-frequency limit of the relaxation time range for the transverse permittivity, and the evolution of the frequency dependence of the dielectric anisotropy. Аннотация: The frequency dependences of the permittivity of a trans-4-propyl-(4-cyanophenyl)-cyclohexane (3PCH) liquid crystal in the nematic phase are measured in the frequency range 1-2000 MHz for different orientations of the director of liquid-crystal molecules with respect to the polarization of an ac electric field. The temperature dependences of the dielectric and optical characteristics are compared in the range of the transition from the nematic phase to the isotropic liquid phase. The dielectric spectra are approximated numerically, and the times of dipole relaxation upon rotation of the molecules about the short and long axes are determined. Аннотация: The distribution function of relaxation times is reconstructed from the dielectric loss spectrum measured over a wide range of frequencies for a 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) liquid crystal. It is demonstrated that the distribution function for the isotropic and nematic phases is asymmetric in shape. Comparison shows that the reconstructed distribution function is in qualitative agreement with similar functions that are analytically derived from the Cole-Davidson and Havriliak-Negami empirical equations. The specific features observed in the behavior of the distribution function with a variation in the angle between the direction of polarization of a microwave electric field and the director of the liquid-crystal molecules are analyzed. A complex dependence of the permittivity for the liquid crystal in the range of ultrahigh frequencies is explained in terms of additional relaxation mechanisms associated with different motions of molecular fragments of alkyl chains. Аннотация: The effect of an electrode material on electrical properties of a composite material based on super-high-molecular polyethylene (SHMPE) filled with carbon nanotubes has been studied using impedance spectroscopy. Using the method of replacing the sample by an equivalent electric circuit, it has been found that, depending on the electrode material, a blocking barrier with high active resistance and a space charge region adjacent to it arise in the interface region. It has been shown that the barrier height is controlled by surface electronic states of SHMPE and weakly depends on the electron work function of metal electrodes (Bardeen barrier). The characteristic times of electrical relaxation characterizing bulk and interface regions of the composite under study have been determined.

Аннотация: A composite based on ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) added with 1 wt % of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a high permittivity (ε = 4.5) and a low dielectric loss (tanδ = 10–2) in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz has been synthesized, and its main mechanical characteristics have been studied. The material has a low (22 MPa) breaking strength, a high (700%) tensile elongation, and an abrasion resistance higher than that of pure UHMWPE by 37%. It is shown using the X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry data that the changes in the mechanical properties of the composite are related to the changes in the polymer matrix structure under the action of the high-intensity ultrasonic radiation used for embedding MWCNTs into the polymer.

In order to increase the density and conductivity, the initial ceramic components were sintered at the highest possible temperatures up to 1660°C, followed by annealing in hydrogen at 800°C. In this case, TiO2 was strongly reduced with the formation of lower titanium oxides (Ti3O5) along with metallic titanium. When interacting with hydrogen, TiH2 is formed. For the first time, impurity phases were found in (BeO + TiO2) ceramics, which can significantly alter its bulk and surface properties. The resulting ceramics has a high reach-through conductivity, which increases significantly after an additional thermal annealing in hydrogen. It was established that the activation energy of conductivity does not depend much on the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles and decreases significantly in the low-temperature region. The method of constructing equivalent electrical circuits was used to simulate the passage of the active and reactive components of the current through the complex internal structure of the ceramics.

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of experimental measurements of constitutive and electrophysical properties in hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene with gadolinium sample. We extracted endohedral metallofullerene from carbon condensate, synthesized in high-frequency arc discharge plasma. Later hydroxyl groups were added. Via methods of infrared and x-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, it was established that the molecules of hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene have the Gd@C82Ox(OH)y, x + y=(40–42) composition. The method of measuring the electrical impedance in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz shows that the resulting hydroxylated fullerene is an ion conductor. The measured frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity and conductivity of hydroxylated fullerene are explained based on the assumption of an inhomogeneous distribution of electric charges in the material volume. Dielectric-hysteresis loops in the frequency range of 25 Hz–1 MHz and temperature range of 80–300 K, and volt-ampere characteristics were measured. The obtained results imply the appearance of residual polarization induced by the electric field in hydroxylated fullerene. However, the constant dipole moment is absent. © 2019

Аннотация: An electrically conducting two-component BeO-ceramic with the addition of micro- and nano-crystalline TiO2 powder is prepared that can be used as a material for scattered microwave radiation absorption in high-power electronic devices. The nature of the occurrence of electrical conductivity and absorption of the microwave field in (BeO + TiO2)-ceramics is not completely established. Impedance spectroscopy is used for the first time to investigate the electrical and dielectric characteristics of this ceramic in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz in relation to presence of micro- and nano-sized TiO2 phase within the BeO ceramic composition. It is established that the static resistance of ceramics with addition of a TiO2 nanopowder is significantly reduced compared with the resistance of original ceramic with TiO2 micropowder. It is shown that real and imaginary components of the dielectric constant of the ceramic studied increase to abnormally large values with a reduction in frequency of the effective electric field, and in the high frequency range f ≥ 108 Hz the process of dielectric relaxation commences leading to an increase in dielectric loss angle. Dielectric properties of ceramic samples are determined under blocking conditions for through conduction. The effect of TiO2 micropowder additions on dielectric polarization processes with frequency increasing up to 12 × 109 Hz is considered.

Аннотация: The design of a resonant frequency-tunable high-sensitivity microstrip sensor is suggested. The permittivity dispersion of liquid crystals of two homologic series, alkylcyanobiphenyls (7CB and 8CB) and alkyloxycyanobiphenyls (7OCB and 8OCB), is studied at frequencies of 100-900 MHz. The dielectric spectra are shown to be the sum of the Debye relaxation and dielectric resonances observed at f approximate to 160, 280, 360, 450, 550, and 650 MHz. The dielectric resonances are present in the spectra of all the samples in both the nematic and isotropic phase. The substitution of an oxygen atom (series nOCB) for a carbon atom (series nCB) in liquid crystal molecules has a minor effect on the dielectric resonance frequencies but changes the resonance intensities and splits some of the resonance lines. Аннотация: The behavior of the impedance spectra of island permalloy films prepared through vacuum evaporation onto optically polished glass-ceramic substrates has been investigated in the frequency range from 0.0001 to 100 MHz. A resistor-capacitor model of the films has been developed and the model parameters, for which there is a good agreement with experimental data on the frequency dependences of the real and imaginary components of the impedance, have been determined. The specific features in the behavior of the electrical and physical characteristics with variations in the thickness of the sample and the gap between the measuring electrodes have been investigated. It has been found that the relative permittivity of the films under investigation reaches values E similar to 10(7)-10(8). The structural relaxation times have been calculated.

Аннотация: The behavior of frequency dependences of the impedance of a capacitive measuring cell with a liquid crystal has been investigated in the frequency range from 10−1 to 105 Hz. A method for determining electrophysical characteristics of the liquid crystal in the bulk and at the liquid crystal-metal electrode interface has been proposed and tested for liquid crystals of the alkyl cyanobiphenyl series, which are doped with ionic surfactants. The method is based on the use of an equivalent electrical circuit, which makes it possible to approximate the impedance spectra with the required accuracy, and also on the determination of the frequency at the singular point in the impedance spectra, at which the reactive component of the electric current flowing through the liquid-crystal cell is negligible compared to the active component.
