Аннотация: We describe a capacitive dilatometer for measuring the magnetostriction, piezoelectric effect, and linear thermal-expansion coefficient in the temperature range from 1.85 to 350 K in external magnetic fields of up to 90 kOe under a voltage of 1 kV, which operates on the basis of a Quantum Design PPMS commercial facility for studying the properties of solids.

Аннотация: A misalignment of anisotropic crystallites causes small values of anisotropy and decreases the critical current density of textured polycrystalline superconductors. To relate the crystallite misalignment and out-plane anisotropy, the magnetic properties of the textured Bi2223 polycrystalline superconductor were investigated. A distribution of orientation angles of crystallites was determined using different data: scanning electron microscopy images and hysteresis magnetization loops when an external magnetic field was applied at different angles with respect to the texturing plane of the sample. It was demonstrated that the standard deviation of the distribution and the magnetic disorder angle of crystallites in textured samples can be determined from the magnetization data in perpendicular directions. These data may be either the irreversible magnetization measured for two different orientations of the sample or the simultaneously measured magnetization projections parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Аннотация: To elucidate the origin of the well-known anisotropy of the magnetoresistive properties of granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), which is related to the mutual orientation of magnetic field H and transport current j, we investigate the hysteretic dependences of magnetoresistance R(H) of the yttrium HTS sample at the perpendicular (H ⊥ j) and parallel (H || j) configurations. The hysteretic R(H) dependences are analyzed using the concept of the effective field in the intergrain boundaries through which superconducting current carriers tunnel. The effective degree of magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium at the perpendicular configuration was found to be twice as much as at the parallel one. This approach explains well the anisotropy of the magnetoresistive properties of granular HTSs, which was previously reported by many authors, and the temperature dependences of the resistance in the resistive transition region.

Аннотация: A method to determine a value of the effective field in the intergrain medium of a granular superconductor is proposed. The space between superconducting grains is considered to be a Josephson medium where passage of the transport current causes dissipation and the effective field is superposition of external field H and the field induced by magnetic moments of superconducting grains. The method proposed is based on the comparison of hysteresis field dependences of magnetoresistance and magnetization and their relaxation at H=const. By the example of granular YBa2Cu3O7, it is shown that, in the region of weak fields, the effective field in the intergrain medium exceeds by far the external field, i.e., compression of a magnetic flux occurs. Аннотация: In order to clarify the mechanisms in charge of broadening of resistive transition R(T) in magnetic fields of bismuth-based polycrystalline high-T (C) superconductor (HTSC), a comparative study of Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3O (x) (BSCCO) and YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) have been performed. Magnetoresistive effects and irreversibility line obtained from magnetic measurements have been studied. It was established that (1) for YBCO, the smooth part of R(T) dependence unambiguously corresponds to dissipation in the intergrain boundaries for arbitrary magnetic fields; (2) for polycrystalline BSCCO, the smooth part of R(T) dependences correspond to dissipation within intergrain boundary subsystem in the field range H 10(2) Oe only, while standard measurements of R(T) dependences in magnetic field range H 10(2) Oe reflect the dissipation processes occurring both in intergrain boundary and HTSC grain subsystems; (3) for the high-field range, the contribution from intergrain boundaries of BSCCO can be distinguished from magnetoresistance R(H) dependences obtained at high enough current density on textured samples. It is proposed that various magneto-resistive properties of these classical HTSC systems are due comparatively weak pinning in BSCCO.

Аннотация: The current-voltage characteristics of the polycrystalline substituted lanthanum manganite (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 have been measured at temperatures close to the metal-insulator transition temperature and at low temperatures. In both cases, the current-voltage characteristics exhibit nonlinear properties that are strongly dependent on the strength of an applied magnetic field. The mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear properties at these temperatures are found to be different: near the metal-insulator transition, the current-voltage characteristics are determined by the phase layering inside granules, while at low temperatures, they are determined by tunneling of carriers through insulating interlayers of the granules.

Аннотация: The influence of thermomagnetic prehistory on the behavior of a resistive transition R(T) in external magnetic fields of polycrystalline YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) and Bi(1.8)Pb(0.3)Sr(1.9)Ca(2)Cu(3)O (x) high-temperature supercon-ductors and the Bi(1.8)Pb(0.3)Sr(1.9)Ca(2)Cu(3)O (x) + Ag texture has been investigated. It has been found that, for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7), the thermomagnetic prehistory exerts a substantial influence on the dissipation in the subsystem of grain boundaries in magnetic fields up to similar to 10(3) Oe, and this effect becomes insignificant in fields higher than similar to 10(4) Oe. This behavior has been explained by the influence of magnetic moments of high-temperature superconductor grains on the effective magnetic field in the intergranular medium. For bismuth high-temperature superconductors, no influence of thermomagnetic prehistory on the resistive transition has been observed; however, this effect manifests itself in current-voltage characteristics at high transport current densities. There is also a radical difference in the behavior of isotherms of the magnetoresistance R(H) for the yttrium and bismuth systems. For YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7), there is a clear separation between the dissipation regimes in the intergranular medium and in grains, which manifests itself even at low transport current densities as a change of sign in the curvature of the dependence R(H). For a texture based on the bismuth high-temperature superconductor, this feature has been observed only at high current densities (comparable to the critical current density at H = 0). This difference in the behavior of magnetoresistive properties of the classical high-temperature superconductor systems under investigation has been explained by relatively low irreversibility fields of the bismuth high-temperature superconductors. In these materials, simultaneous processes of dissipation can occur in an external magnetic field both in the subsystem of grain boundaries between crystallites and in the crystallites themselves.

Аннотация: The magnetoresistance of granular La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied experimentally over wide ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields. The emphasis is on anomalously large hysteresis of magnetoresistance at low temperatures (T = 4.2 K). The observed rho(H) dependence can be qualitatively explained by spin-dependent tunneling of electrons through the dielectric boundaries of conducting granules characterized by a wide spread in the magnetic-moment magnitudes.

Аннотация: The behavior of temperature dependences of electrical resistance and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline substituted lanthanum manganite (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 at low temperatures was thoroughly studied. A broad hysteresis was found in the field dependences of electrical resistance in the low-temperature region. Above 40 K, no hysteresis feature was observed. The temperature T = 40 K corresponds to the temperature of minimum electrical resistance and the temperature T-N to the antiferromagnet-paramagnet phase transition of the material of the intergrain boundaries. In this work we propose a model which explains the observed features of the rho(T) and rho(H) curves at temperatures below T-N by the formation of a network of ferromagnet-antiferromagnet-ferromagnet tunnel contacts. Аннотация: Magnetoresistance of bulk textured Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3Ox + Ag ceramics has been studied in the magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to a-b planes of Bi2223 crystallites. Besides well known anisotropy of magnetoresistance of textured superconductors (R-H parallel to c RH parallel to a-b), anisotropic hysteresis of R(H) dependences was investigated. Parameters characterizing hysteretic R(H) curves differ for the cases H parallel to c and H parallel to a-b. This behavior is explained within the model of a granular superconductor where the total magnetic induction in the intercrystallite boundaries is superposition of the external field and the magnetic field induced by dipole magnetic moments of neighbor crystallites. Аннотация: Current-voltage characteristics of the polycrystalline substituted lanthanum manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 were experimentally studied at T - 77.4 K in magnetic fields up to 13 kOe. In these characteristics, a portion of negative differential resistivity was observed above a certain threshold value of critical current density j caused, in our opinion, by nonequilibrium heating of the electron gas due to low thermal conductivity of the manganite material. Because of the nonlinearity of the current-voltage characteristics, the field dependences of resistivity rho( H) appear extremely sensitive to the value of a transport current. Аннотация: Temperature evolution of the current-voltage characteristics (CVCs) of a single-crystal lanthanum manganite (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 is investigated in a wide (up to 1 A) range of instrumental currents. Effects of a transport current and an applied electric field on the resistance of the material are studied in view of possible implementation of the charge ordering break in dielectric regions occurring due to phase separation in manganites. A negative differential resistance portion observed in the CVCs suggests the presence of a current switching effect. Below the temperature of the metal-dielectric transition in (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3, the hysteresis is observed in the CVC. The detailed analysis of the internal sample heating on the basis of experimental data on thermal conductivity showed, however, that these CVC features can be explained within the concept of non-equilibrium heating of electron gas. Аннотация: Hysteresis and relaxation of magnetoresistance and magnetization of substituted (La0.5Eu0.5)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 lanthanum manganite in a low-temperature region ( 40 K) are investigated. It is shown that at these temperature features of the magnetoresistive effect are determined mainly by spin-dependent tunnelling of carriers via insulating grain boundaries. As was demonstrated previously, the grain boundaries may be antiferromagnetically ordered. Therefore, relaxation of magnetization and resistance is determined by the processes of relative orientation of the magnetic moments of ferromagnetic domains neighbouring the antiferromagnetic boundary of ferromagnetic domains under the action of temperature fluctuations. It is shown that relaxation follows the logarithmic law within the time interval t similar to 10(2)-3x10(3) s. A comparison between time evolutions of the magnetic moment and resistance shows that magnetoresistance and magnetization are related as delta R

Аннотация: Granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) are characterized by the hysteretic behavior of magnetoresistance. This phenomenon is attributed to the effective field in the intergrain medium of a granular HTS. At the grain boundaries, which are, in fact, weak Josephson couplings, the dissipation is observed. The effective field in the intergrain medium is a superposition of the external field and the field induced by magnetic moments of HTS grains. Meanwhile, analysis of the field width of the R(H) magnetoresistance hysteresis ΔH = Hdec − Hinc at Hdec = const, where Hinc and Hdec are increasing and decreasing branches of the R(H) hysteretic dependence, shows that the effective field in the intergrain medium exceeds by far both the external field and the field induced by magnetic moments of HTS grains. This situation suggests the magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium because of the small length of grain boundaries, which amounts to ∼1 nm, i.e., is comparable with the coherence length and corresponds to Josephson tunneling in HTS materials. In this work, using the previously developed approach, we examine experimental data on the magnetoresistance and magnetization hysteresis in the granular YBa2Cu3O7 HTS compound in the range from 77 K to the critical temperature. According to the results obtained, the degree of magnetic flux compression determined by the parameter α in the expression for the effective field Beff(H) = H − 4π M(H) α in the intergrain medium remains constant over the investigated temperature range. All the features of the observed evolution of the R(H) hysteretic dependences are explained well within the proposed approach when the expression for Beff(H) contains the experimental M(H) magnetization data and the parameter α of about 20–25. The latter is indicative of the dominant effect of magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium on the transport properties of granular HTS materials.

Аннотация: We demonstrate the microwave detection effect in a granular La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 sample. Dc voltage generated by the sample in response to microwave irradiation below the Curie temperature is found to be dependent on the applied magnetic field. The magnetic field dependence of the dc voltage has a broad peak resembling an absorption line. The detection effect depends substantially on the magnetic history of the sample; however, identical measurement conditions provide reproducibility of the experimental results. The detected dc voltage increases linearly with microwave power and strongly depends on a bias current through the sample. According to the results of systematic measurements, there exist two contributions to a value of the detected output signal. The first is magneto-independent; it can be explained in the framework of a mechanism used traditionally for description of the rectification effect in metal-insulator-metal junctions with nonmagnetic metals. The other is magneto-dependent; it originates from the interplay between the spin-dependent current through magnetic tunnel junctions and spin dynamics of the grains, which form these junctions in the sample.

Аннотация: Polymorphic modification of iron oxide, known as ε-Fe2O3, exists only in the form of nanoparticles with characteristic sizes up to several tens of nanometers. Particles of these sizes exhibit a large coercive force, about 20 kOe at room temperature. In the temperature range of 80–150 K, a magnetic transition occurs in ε-Fe2O3, accompanied by a sharp decrease in the coercive force. At the same time, there are significant differences in the magnetic behavior of "large" (~20 nm) particles and ultra-small particles (up to 6 nm). A number of experimental facts indicate the manifestation of size effects that lead to a change in the magnetic structure in particles of these sizes. In addition, a surface effect is also manifested for such particles - a significant contribution to the magnetic behavior is governed by surface magnetic anisotropy. In this paper, a brief review of the manifestation of these size and surface effects in the magnetic properties of ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles is carried out.

Аннотация: Исследовано магнитосопротивление текстурированного высокотемпературного сверхпроводника (ВТСП) Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9 Ca2Cu3Ox+Ag при различных направлениях транспортного тока I и внешнего магнитного поля H относительно кристаллографических направлений ВТСП-кристаллитов. Когда I и H ориентированы вдоль плоскостей ab кристаллитов и varphi --- угол между H и I, то анизотропная часть магнитосопротивления следует функциональной зависимости sin2varphi, характерной для течения вихрей под действием силы Лоренца. Магнитосопротивление R при H, параллельном оси c кристаллитов ( H || c), больше, чем R при H || ab для обоих случаев I || c и I || ab. Коэффициент анизотропии gamma~ 2.3 оценен из скейлинга зависимостей R(H), измеренных при H || c и H || ab. Учет магнитного поля, создаваемого транспортным током, позволяет выполнить скейлинг зависимостей R(H) при различных значениях I. Предложена качественная картина протекания тока вдоль оси c кристаллитов в текстурированном ВТСП.

Аннотация: С целью выяснения причины известной анизотропии магниторезистивных свойств гранулярных высокотемпературных сверхпроводников (ВТСП), связанной со взаимной ориентацией магнитного поля H и транспортного тока j, исследовано поведение гистерезисных зависимостей магнитосопротивления R(H) образца ВТСП иттриевой системы при перпендикулярной ( H normal j) и параллельной ( H|| j) конфигурациях. На основании концепции эффективного поля в межгранульных границах (через которые туннелируют носители сверхпроводящего тока) проведен анализ гистерезисных зависимостей R(H). Величина параметра, характеризующего эффективную степень сжатия магнитного потока в межгранульной среде, для перпендикулярной конфигурации оказалась примерно в 2 раза больше, чем для параллельной. Такой подход хорошо объясняет наблюдаемую многими авторами анизотропию магниторезистивных свойств гранулярных ВТСП (включая и данные по температурным зависимостям сопротивления в области резистивного перехода).
