Аннотация: The interference of nonpolarized light transmitted through an ensemble of nematic liquid crystal domains formed on a polycarbonate surface has been investigated. A model based on the superposition of the ordinary and extraordinary beams passing through domains with a radial structure has been developed. Expressions for the phase difference and intensity of the interfering beams have been derived that take into account the distribution of the liquid crystal director field. The dependences of the optical transmittance of a domain layer on the applied voltage have been calculated with regard to the material and optical constants of a liquid crystal and structural features and averaged morphological parameters of individual domains in the experimental sample. The results of the calculation are consistent with the experimental data, which confirms the validity of the proposed model. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: The dynamics of the optical response of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal under the action of electric field pulses was experimentally studied for film samples differing in the size of nematic droplets. The optical signal relaxation curve exhibits an oscillating character, with the number of oscillations determined by the transverse size of the nematic droplets. The interference character of the signal oscillations is confirmed by an analysis of the oscillating response within the framework of the anomalous diffraction approximation and by a comparison with the dependence of the transmitted light intensity on the applied voltage measured in a static regime. Аннотация: The propagation of a laser beam through a hybrid-aligned nematic layer with a surface disclination line has been investigated. A model of the light interference has been developed to consider the scattering by the structural inhomogeneities. The analytical expression that includes the factor characterizing an exponential decrease in the light scattering has been obtained. The dependence of the intensity of light transmitted through the layer on the magnetic field has been measured. The dependence has been accompanied by the interference oscillations. The theoretical expression is consistent with the experiment, which confirms the correctness of the model concepts.

Аннотация: A change in the optical transmission of an ordered single-layer ensemble of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) droplets of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) in a poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) matrix in response to a magnetic field pulse with an amplitude of H = 9 x 10(6) A/m was observed. Since the leading pulse front duration (tau(onH) = 5 ms) significantly exceeded the theoretically calculated NLC response time (tau(onLC) = 0.8 ms), the dynamics of transformations of the NLC director orientation and the optical response were analogous to those in the case of a stationary or slowly varying magnetic field. In contrast, the field decay time (tau(offH) = 25 ms) was much shorter than the NLC relaxation time (tau(offLC) = 300 ms) and, hence, the trailing front of the optical response was not influenced by the oscillatory character of the magnetic field decay during capacitor discharge via an RL chain.
