Аннотация: Optical Tamm states localized at the edges of a photonic crystal bounded from one or both sides by a nanocomposite have been studied. The nanocomposite consists of metallic nanoinclusions, which have a spherical or orientationally ordered spheroidal shape and are dispersed in a transparent matrix, and is characterized by the resonant effective permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra have been calculated for waves with longitudinal and transverse polarizations in such structures at the normal incidence of light. The spectral manifestation of Tamm states that is due to the existence of negative values of the real part of the effective permittivity has been analyzed for the visible spectral range. It has been established that the characteristics of Tamm states localized at the edge of the photonic crystal depend strongly both on the concentration of nanoballs in the nanocomposite film and on its thickness. Modes formed by two coupled Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the edges of the photonic crystal adjacent to two nanocomposite layers have been examined. It has been shown that, in the case of the anisotropic nanocomposite layer adjacent to the photonic crystal, each of two orthogonal polarizations of the incident wave corresponds to a specific frequency of the Tamm state localized at the edge; owing to this property, the transmission spectra of such a structure are polarization sensitive.

Аннотация: Spectral properties of a 1D photonic crystal that is comprised of two multilayered dielectric mirrors and a nanocomposite layer between them as a structural defect are studied. The nanocomposite consists of silver nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and is characterized by an effective resonant permittivity. The spectral manifestation of the defect mode splitting for the s-polarized waves is studied as a function of the angle of incidence and concentration of nanoballs. Specific features of the transmission spectra for the s- and p-polarized waves are established for the angle of incidence equal to the Brewster angle of the seeding photonic crystal. It is shown, in particular, that, in the region of the continuous transmission spectrum of the spolarized waves, there arises an additional bandgap caused by mixing of the resonant mode with photonic modes.

Аннотация: The optical Tamm states (OTSs) localized at the edges of a photonic crystal bounded by a nanoporous silver (NPS) film are investigated. NPS involves spherical vacuum nanopores dispersed in the metal matrix and is characterized by the effective resonance permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra of the structures under study at the normal incidence of light are calculated. It is shown that each Tamm state has its own frequency range where the real part of effective permittivity is negative. The light field localization at the high- and low-frequency OTSs is investigated. The specific features of spectral manifestation of the OTSs are studied in dependence on the nanopore concentration in the metal matrix and on the NPS film thickness.

Аннотация: The optical Tamm states localized at the edges of a photonic crystal bounded by a nanocomposite on its one or both sides are investigated. The nanocomposite consists of metal nanoinclusions with an orientation-ordered spheroidal shape, which are dispersed in a transparent matrix, and is characterized by the effective resonance permittivity. The spectrum of transmission of the longitudinally and transversely polarized waves by such structures at the normal incidence of light was calculated. The spectral manifestation of the Tamm states caused by negative values of the real part of the effective permittivity in the visible spectral range was studied. Features of the spectral manifestation of the optical Tamm states for different degrees of extension of spheroidal nanoparticles and different periods of a photonic crystal were investigated. It is demonstrated that splitting of the frequency due to elimination of degeneracy of the Tamm states localized at the interfaces between the photonic crystal and nanocomposite strongly depends on the volume fraction of the spheroids in the nanocomposite and on the ratio between the polar and equatorial semiaxes of the spheroid. Each of the two orthogonal polarizations of the incident wave has its own dependence of splitting on the nanoparticle density, which makes the transmission spectra polarization-sensitive. It is shown that the Tamm state is affected by the size-dependent permittivity of anisotropic nanoparticles. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The bulk concentrations of metal nanoparticles dispersed in a transparent nanocomposite matrix are determined at which the effective permittivity takes near-zero values. The transmission, reflection and absorption spectra of the investigated structures at the normal incidence of light are calculated. The demonstrated possibility of formation of the optical Tamm states at the interface between the photonic crystal and nanocomposite is ensured by the near-zero real and imaginary parts of the permittivity or only the imaginary part of the permittivity at the zero real part. The specific features of field localization at the optical Tamm state frequencies are examined.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded by an absorbing plasmonic gyroid layer are investigated. The gyroid material is a foam-like metallic three-dimensionally periodic curved film with zero mean curvature at every point. We calculate the transmittance and reflectance spectra at the normal and oblique light incidence. The possibility of the Tamm state formation at the interface between a photonic crystal and a plasmonic gyroid layer caused by the negative real part of the gyroid permittivity is demonstrated for the first time. Specific features of field localization at the Tamm state frequencies are discussed. It is shown that the spectral and polarization properties of the optical Tamm states are highly sensitive to the change in the angle of incidence and in the refractive index of a medium filling the gyroid cavities.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded by a resonant absorbing nanocomposite layer with the near-zero permittivity have been studied. The problem of calculating the transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance spectra of such structures at the normal and oblique incidence of light has been solved. It is shown that, depending on the permittivity sign near zero, the nanocomposite is characterized by either metallic or dielectric properties. The possibility of simultaneous formation of the Tamm plasmon polariton at the photonic crystal/metallic nanocomposite interface and the localized state similar to the defect mode with the field intensity maximum inside the dielectric nanocomposite layer is demonstrated. Specific features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton and defect mode frequencies are analyzed. © 2018 by the authors.

Аннотация: We analytically and numerically study coupling mechanisms between 1D photonic crystal (PhC) and 2D array of plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in its defect layer. We introduce general formalism to explain and predict the emergence of PhC-mediated Wood–Rayleigh anomalies, which spectral positions agree well with the results of exact simulations with Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method. Electromagnetic coupling between localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and PhC-mediated Wood–Rayleigh anomalies makes it possible to efficiently tailor PhC modes. The understanding of coupling mechanisms in such hybrid system paves a way for optimal design of sensors, light absorbers, modulators and other types of modern photonic devices with controllable optical properties.
