Аннотация: The high-resolution optical absorption spectra of NdFe3(BO3)4 single crystals have been recorded at temperatures from 4 to 40 K in the IR range of f–f transitions in a Nd3+ ion. Light linearly polarized at different angles to the C2 axes in the basal plane has been passed along the trigonal C3 axis. Below the temperature of magnetic moment ordering into a collinear antiferromagnetic structure (TN ≈ 30 K), dichroism, that is, the absorption versus polarization dependence, arises. The temperature and angular dependences of dichroism indicate that the magnetic moments of iron are directed along the C2 axes up to about 17 K, the number of domains with variously directed C2 axes being different. The mechanism of linear dichroism has been discussed. Below 17 K, a smooth transition to the helicoidal magnetic phase has been observed, with the collinear phase coexisting with the helicoidal one. Data presented in this article contradict the earlier concept of magnetic moments fluctuating in the low-temperature phase near the C2 axis within the ±10° interval.

Аннотация: This work presents information on the growth and spectroscopic study of single crystals of copper metaborate doped with nickel Cu1–xNixB2O4 (x = 0.05, 0.1). In the absorption spectra of both crystals, satellites related to Cu centers distorted by impurity Ni atoms were observed near the lines of zero phonon transitions. Polarization studies in the isotropic ab-plane of the tetragonal crystal Cu1–xNixB2O4 show the presence of linear magnetic dichroism in the magnetically ordered state, which was previously observed both in manganese-doped and undoped copper metaborates CuB2O4. The temperature of magnetic phase transitions into the collinear antiferromagnetic and into helicoidal structures, TN = 19.1 K and T * = 8.6 K, respectively, were determined from the temperature dependence of the dichroic signal.

Аннотация: A detailed study of the structural phase transition in Eu1–xLaxFe3(BO3)4 mixed crystals as a function of composition is reported. By analyzing a frequency shift of an electronic f-f transition in high-resolution optical spectra of Eu3+ ions, we detected a decrease in the phase transition temperature Ts from 87.05 to 12.2 K (upon cooling) and a simultaneous increase in thermal hysteresis ΔTs from 0.29 to 4.7 K with increasing x from x=0 to x=0.12. A rectangular hysteresis loop was observed. The experimental Ts(x) and ΔTs(x) dependences are described within the developed analytical model utilizing linear decrease in Ts with x and treating the increase in ΔTs in terms of the impurity-related decrease in the interaction between some local order parameters. We argue that R1−xR′xFe3(BO3)4 solid solutions, where R and R′ are different rare-earth elements, can be used to implement optical storage devices and switches operating at any chosen temperature between 0 and 450 K. It is found that the changes in the composition and, correspondingly, structural phase transition parameters do not affect the magnetic phase transformation. Eu0.88La0.12Fe3(BO3)4 demonstrates the structural phase transition at about 12 K, well below the Néel temperature TN=32K.

Аннотация: We report on the high-resolution spectroscopic study of multiferroic ErFe3(BO3)4. The energies of all eight Kramers doublets of the ground 4I15/2 multiplet of the Er3+ ion were determined by the high-resolution 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 infrared luminescence spectra. The spectroscopically determined temperature dependence of the splitting of the ground Kramers doublet was used to calculate the contribution of the erbium subsystem into the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility of erbium iron borate. The analysis of the thermodynamic properties based on these calculations allowed us to suggest the domain structure in the easy-plane antiferromagnetically ordered iron subsystem, with two magnetically nonequivalent erbium positions in each domain.

Аннотация: We report on a new effect caused by the electron-phonon coupling in a stoichiometric rare-earth antiferromagnetic crystal subjected to an external magnetic field, namely, the appearance of a nonzero gap in the spectrum of electronic excitations in an arbitrarily small field. The effect was registered in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of an easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext-c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T, and two bifurcation points were observed. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the basis of the equation derived in the framework of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8 cm-1. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: We present the results of temperature- and polarization-dependent high-resolution optical spectroscopy studies of DyFe3(BO3)4 performed in spectral ranges 40-300cm-1 and 3000-23000cm-1. The crystal-field (CF) parameters for the Dy3+ ions in the P3121 (P3221) phase of DyFe3(BO3)4 are obtained from calculations based on the analysis of the measured f-f transitions. Recently, quadrupole helix chirality and its domain structure was observed in resonant x-ray diffraction experiments on DyFe3(BO3)4 using circularly polarized x rays [T. Usui, Y. Tanaka, H. Nakajima, M. Taguchi, A. Chainani, M. Oura, S. Shin, N. Katayama, H. Sawa, Y. Wakabayashi, and T. Kimura, Nat. Mater. 13, 611 (2014)10.1038/nmat3942]. Using the obtained set of the CF parameters, we calculate temperature dependencies of the electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions induced by the low-symmetry (C2) CF component and show that the quadrupole helix chirality can be explained quantitatively. We also consider the temperature dependencies of the bulk magnetic dc-susceptibility and the helix chirality of the single-site magnetic susceptibility tensors of the Dy3+ ions in the paramagnetic P3121 (P3221) phase and suggest the neutron and resonant x-ray diffraction experiments in a magnetic field to reveal the helix chirality of field-induced magnetic moments. © 2017 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: High-resolution polarized transmission spectra of DyFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated in broad spectral (10-23000 cm(-1)) and temperature (3.5-300 K) ranges. Energies of the dysprosium levels in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases were determined. On the basis of these data and preliminary calculations in the frameworks of the exchange-charge model, we determined the crystal-field and Dy-Fe exchange interaction parameters of the Dy3+ ions at sites with the point C-2 symmetry corresponding to the enantiomorphic P3(1)21 and P3(2)21 space groups. The values of electronic quadrupole moments of the Dy3+ ions were calculated, which enabled us to interpret results of the work [Usui et al., Nature Mater. 13, 611 (2014)] on the observation of domains of different quadrupole chirality in DyFe3(BO3)(4).

Аннотация: The work presents a study of manganese-doped copper metaborate (Cu,Mn)B2O4 using optical spectroscopy. The temperature of the antiferromagnetic phase transition TN = 19 K has been defined according to the absorption spectra. Polarization studies (Cu,Mn)B2O4 in isotropic ab-plane show the presence of linear antiferromagnetic dichroism in the magnetically ordered state previously observed in pure copper metaborate CuB2O4.This measurement allows to find the magnetic phase transition into an elliptical structure at the temperature T* = 7.0 K.
