Аннотация: The simple lattice and magnetic structure, the high Neel temperature, the narrow antiferromagnetic resonance line of FeBO3, and the narrow electron paramagnetic resonance line of its isostructural diamagnetic analogs MBO3:Fe3+(M = Ga, In, Sc, Lu) make iron borate unique for investigations and applications. Iron borate is a model crystal for numerous experimental and theoretical studies, including spin crossovers and metallization at megabar pressures and many-electron effects in optics and X-ray spectroscopy. The recent works dealing with the investigation of the properties of FeBO(3)are reviewed.

Аннотация: Strong dependence of birefringence and absorption spectra of d-d, f-f and charge transfer transitions on the direction of light beam in the plane perpendicular to the threefold crystallographic axis has been found out in trigonal crystal Nd:GdFe2.1Ga0.9(BO3)(4). X-ray measurements have shown that the crystal consists of inversion twins, whose formation is stimulated by the partial substitution of Fe by Ga. Observed violation of axial symmetry of the trigonal crystal optical properties is accounted for on the basis of assumption about stripe domain structure of the inversion twins. Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and optical properties have been studied in a glass system {20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2+GeO2)} with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in the more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+ ions. Two magnetic phase transitions at 55 and 12 K were detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters containing Gd ions. The overall shape of the EPR spectra shows the presence of clustering at the higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance signal is altered in shape, indicating an onset of magnetic anisotropy field. This signal is convincingly fitted to superparamagnetic resonance arising from ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a significant shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge, ascribed to a charge transfer transition between Gd ions. A nonmonotonous change of refractive index with the increase of the Gd content indicates changes in the glass matrix and in Gd cluster structure.

Аннотация: Phosphor materials with ultra‐high color purity are highly desired in backlit display and WLEDs. How to achieve high‐purity three‐primary emission in rare earth ions activated inorganic phosphors has become a hot topic. Herein, we reported ultra‐narrow band and highly efficient blue‐violet‐emitting Eu2+‐doped Ba2B5O9X (fwhm = 31 nm) and NaBa4(AlB4O9)2X3 (X = Cl, Br) (fwhm = 43 nm) phosphors with peak positions around 424‐437 nm. Especially, the color purity of Ba2B5O9Cl:Eu sample even exceeded 97%, its internal quantum efficiency could achieve 87%. The EXANES analysis revealed that the Eu mainly existed in the form of +2. According to the Rietveld structural refinement, extraordinarily narrow band emission should be attributed to the highly symmetric lattice structures with the flower‐like polyhedrons in the studied (alumino)borate matrix. Significantly, the color gamut of as‐prepared blue phosphor combined with the standard green and red phosphors was almost close to that of Rec. 2020 display standard. In addition, cation substitution strategy in NaBa4(AlxB5‐xO9)2Cl3 (x = 0‐4) and NaBa4(GayB5‐yO9)2Cl3 (y = 0‐3) samples successfully achieved spectra adjustment, and the underlying mechanism was proposed. All these results demonstrate that the as‐prepared phosphors could be superior blue‐emitting candidates for backlit display as well as WLEDs.

Аннотация: The terahertz spectra of a rare-earth iron borate with the huntite structure are obtained for the first time. We study the low-temperature (4.0–90 K) α-polarized transmittance spectra of the EuFe3(BO3)4 single crystal in the region 0.9–6.0 THz. Pronounced shifts of phonon frequencies and appearance of new phonon modes at the temperature T S = 58 K of the R 32 → P 3 1 21 structural phase transition are observed. Additional shifts of phonon frequencies occur at the temperature T N = 34 K of the magnetic ordering of the Fe subsystem, thus evidencing the spin–phonon coupling in this multiferroic material.

Аннотация: With the development of technology, the need for highly efficient functional materials is steadily increasing. Currently, borates attract the attention of researchers, as they are promising nonlinear materials. Potassium rubidium aluminum borate based on potassium aluminum borate (trigonal syngony, space group P321, Z = 3) was obtained by solid-phase synthesis. The individuality and purity of the borates were confirmed by X-ray diffraction. Analysis of differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric method for K2(1‑x)Rb2xAl2B2O7 (x = 0.1– 0.8) was performed in the temperature range of 25–1075°С. Potassium rubidium borates decompose in the temperature range of 900 –1000°C. Differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric loss tangent, and second-harmonic generation data revealed phase transitions for K0.6Rb1.4Al2B2O7. A significant SHG effect was found at room temperature for K0.6Rb1.4Al2B2O7 (Q = 70). Then the SHG effect increases to Q = 85 at a temperature of 645°C and remains constant with a further increase in temperature. The new triple borate Cs1.39Tl0.61Al2B2O7 was synthesized by the solid-phase synthesis, and its crystallographic parameters were obtained by the Rietveld method. This borate crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 / c with the unit cell parameters: Z = 2, a = 6.6669(3) Å, b = 7.2991(3) Å , c = 9.3589(4) Å , β =116.6795(18)°, V = 406.94(3) Å 3. The structure can be considered to be built up from the nearly planar [Al2B2O10] rings, which are composed of two AlO4 tetrahedra and two BO3 triangles, connected, alternately to each other by corner-sharing.С развитием технологии потребность в высокоэффективных функциональных материалах растет. В настоящее время бораты привлекают внимание исследователей, поскольку они являются перспективными нелинейными материалами. Твердофазным синтезом получены бораты K2(1-x)Rb2xAl2B2O7 (x = 0.1–0.8) на основе калий-алюминиевого бората (тригональная сингония, пространственная группа P321, Z = 3). Индивидуальность и чистота боратов подтверждена рентгеновской дифракцией. Анализ дифференциально-сканирующей калориметрией и термогравиметрическим методом для K2(1-x)Rb2xAl2B2O7 (x = 0.1–0.8) был проведен в интервале температур 25–1075 ºС. Калий-рубидиевые бораты разлагаются в интервале температур 900–1000 °C. Дифференциальной сканирующей калориметрией, диэлектрическими измерениями и методом генерации второй оптической гармоники выявлены фазовые переходы для K0.6Rb1.4Al2B2O7. Значительный ГВГ-эффект был обнаружен при комнатной температуре для K0.6Rb1.4Al2B2O7 (Q = 70). Эффект генерации второй гармоники возрастает до Q = 85 при температуре 645 °C и остается постоянным при дальнейшем увеличении температуры. Новый тройной борат Cs1.39Tl0.61Al2B2O7 был синтезирован методом твердофазного синтеза, а его кристаллографические параметры были получены с помощью метода Ритвельда. Этот борат кристаллизуется в моноклинной пространственной группе P21/c с параметрами элементарной ячейки: Z = 2, a = 6.6669 (3) Å, b = 7.2991 (3) Å, c = 9.3589 (4) Å, β = 116.6795 (18)º, V = 406.94 (3) Å3. Структуру можно представить в виде почти плоских колец [Al2B2O10], которые состоят из двух тетраэдров AlO4 и двух BO3 треугольников, соединенных попеременно друг с другом посредством вершин.

Аннотация: Single crystals of LaCr3(BO3)4 were synthesized through spontaneous nucleation from a K2Mo3O10 flux melt. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) at temperatures of 293 K and 85 K. LaCr-borate crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group with unit cell parameters a = 7.47980(5) Å, b = 9.55180(7) Å, c = 11.48330(8) Å, β= 104.0060(6)°, V = 796.04(1) Å3 (for C1, T = 293 K), and a = 7.47380(5) Å, b = 9.55520(7) Å, c = 11.47100(8) Å, β = 103.9330(6)°, V = 795.08(1) Å3 (for C2, T = 85 K), each with Z = 4. The temperature dependence of the unit cell parameters, including the monoclinic angle (β) and the unit cell volume (V), was investigated over the range of 85–293 K. No structural phase transitions were observed in the low-temperature region down to 85 K. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed no high-temperature phase transitions between 50 and 1350°C. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy confirmed the monoclinic structure of LaCr3(BO3)4 crystals, revealing characteristic absorption bands, including the lowest frequency mode associated with the translational vibrations of the La3+ ion.

Аннотация: The results are given of experimental and theoretical study for the photoinduced variation of the magnetic moment in FeBO3. In the experiment a SQUID-magnetometer provided with the optical pump system is used. The study of field, temperature and time dependences of the photoinduced magnetic moment variation for various levels of the optical emission power allows to find the mechanism responsible for changing magnetic state under irradiation. All the experimental results are explained within the model in which the crystal-matrix is described in the continual approximation and a photocenter, probably, Fe2+ ion is done as a quasi Ising S=1 ion coupled by exchange with one of the crystal magnetic sublattice. Under illuminating the redistribution of the principal multiplet level populations occurs so that the level of the stronger anisotropic character is populated predominantly due to the selection rules. The model used allows to calculate and explain the anisotropic properties of FeBO3 crystals and spin-flip transition in the basal plane at low temperature.

Аннотация: The known crystal structures of borate compounds with general composition AI2MIII 2B2O7 (AI: Na, K, Cs, Rb) have been considered. The structures in space groups P63/m, P-31c, P321 and P21/c have been found depending on cation combination. Criterion k = (r(MIII)+r(B)+2r(O))/r(AI) has been formulated and it controls the formation of trigonal K2Al2B2O7 (KABO) type structure. The existence of noncentrosymmetric KABO-type borates is possible over the range of k = 2.7 – 2.06. Аннотация: New noncentrosymmetric double borate Rb3EuB6O12 was designed and synthesized by the solid state reaction method, and its crystallographic parameters were obtained by Rietveld analysis. This borate crystallizes in the trigonal space group R32 with cell parameters a = 13.4604(2) Å, c = 30.7981(5) Å, Z = 15. Its structure features a three-dimensional framework composed of the [B5O10]5 − groups that are bridged by Eu-O polyhedra. The existence of B5O10 group in the structure was confirmed by vibrational spectroscopy. Rb3EuB6O12 melts incongruently at 1101 K. The second harmonic generation effect of Rb3EuB6O12 is 16 times higher than that of the α-quartz standard. In the luminescence spectrum, the domination of a single prominent narrow line from the hypersensitive 5D0 - 7F2 manifold of Eu3 + ions is observed, while the 5D0 - 7F1 manifold and ultranarrow 5D0 - 7F0 line are of comparable peak intensity. These features are explained by a specific local symmetry of the Eu3+ ion within the crystal structure of Rb3EuB6O12.

Аннотация: The optical properties and structure of gadolinium iron borate GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystals are studied at high pressures produced in diamond-anvil cells. X-ray diffraction data obtained at a pressure of 25.6 GPa reveal a first-order phase transition retaining the trigonal symmetry and increasing the unit cell volume by 8%. The equation of state is obtained and the compressibility of the crystal is estimated before and after the phase transition. The optical spectra reveal two electronic transitions at pressures similar to26 GPa and similar to43 GPa. Upon the first transition, the optical gap decreases jumpwise from 3.1 to similar to2.25 eV. Upon the second transition at P = 43 GPa, the optical gap deceases down to similar to0.7 eV, demonstrating a dielectric-semiconductor transition. By using the theoretical model developed for a FeBO3 crystal and taking into account some structural analogs of these materials, the anomalies of the high-pressure optical spectra are explained. Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The rare earth aluminum borates RAl3(BO3)4 have only one magnetic subsystem - a subsystem of rare earth ions. That is why same of these crystals can be a simple model systems for the study of spontaneous and magnetic field induced phase transitions. In this work, the specific heat and ESR were studied in order to determine parameters of interactions between the magnetic ions in the TbAl3(BO3)4 crystal. Investigation of temperature dependence of the specific heat allowed us to determine the magnetic ordering temperature of the rare-earth subsystem of TbAl3(BO3)4, Tc = 0.68 K. The initial splitting, Δ ≈ 1.3 K, and the effective g-factor, g = 16, of the lowest quasidoublet of Tb3+ ion were determined from the ESR experiments. In the case of antiferromagnetic ordering, in frame of the molecular field theory, the difference between the constants of effective fields of intrasublattice interaction, λ11, and intersublattice interaction λ12 can be calculated by using the expression: (λ11- λ12) = Δ/2 (geff μB) 2tanh (Δ/2Tc). In the case of ferromagnetic ordering, λ12 = 0 and λ11 is equal to the molecular field constant λ0. By fitting this expression to the experimental data we obtained (λ11- λ12) or λ0 equal to 0.03 T2 /K. Low temperature magnetic ordering and small value of the effective interaction between the magnetic moments of the terbium ions allows us to make the assumption about the dipole-dipole nature of the magnetic ordering in this material.
