Аннотация: Temperature and field dependences of the magnetization of VBO3 and CrBO3 single crystals with the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the (111) basal plane were measured. VBO3 was found to have a considerable uniaxial anisotropy with a field H-a approximate to 6.25 T. CrBO3 was shown to exhibit not only uniaxial but also hexagonal anisotropy. The experimental anisotropy constants were estimated, and their temperature dependences are presented. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Magnetic and optical properties of GdFe3-xGax(BO3)(4) single crystals are investigated by Mossbauer and optical spectroscopy. The GdFe3(BO3)(4) multielectron band structure model is derived. A high- and low-spin crossover of Fe3+ ion, a collapse of the magnetic moment, the suppression of Coulomb correlations, and insulator-semiconductor transition are predicted. Аннотация: Temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of the Er3+ probe ion in DyFe3(BO3)(4) and HoFe3(BO3)(4) are reported. The data provide the temperature of magnetic ordering and direction of the Fe3+ magnetic moments. Both compounds order magnetically at T-N = 39 +/- 1K. The magnetic structure of DyFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-axis type, while that of HoFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-plane type. The role of anisotropic interactions between the iron and the rare-earth subsystems is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Orthorhombic bismuth triborate (delta-BiB3O6) Single crystals were grown via the top-seeded method at atmospheric pressure. delta-BiB3O6 is shown to be a stable polymorph at temperatures close to the melting point while alpha-BiB3O6 is a metastable one. Optical, acoustic and electromechanical properties of delta-BiB3O6 are measured. Possibility of doping delta-BiB3O6 with large amounts of rare earths is demonstrated. Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed on iron borates RFe(3)(BO(3))(4)(R = Y, Ho) to investigate the low temperature magnetic structures and to clarify the role of the rare earth in the formation of the long-range magnetic order. Both compounds see an identical magnetic propagation vector tau = [ 0, 0, 1/2] within the P3(1)21 crystallographic space group appear at Neel temperatures of T(N) = 37 K for the Y and TN = 38 K for the Ho compound. The strong polarization effect of the Fe sublattice on the Ho(3+) ions leads to the simultaneous ordering of both sublattices while the competition between their anisotropies governs the spin-reorientation process at T(SR) = 5 K. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of the determined structural details and the specific rare-earth ions present including information on compounds investigated earlier.

PrFe3(BO3)(4), which crystallizes in the spacegroup R32, becomes antiferromagnetic at T-N = 32 K, with t = [0 0 3/2], while ErFe3(BO3)(4), which keeps the P3(1)21 symmetry over the whole studied temperature range 1.5 K T 520 K, becomes antiferromagnetic below T-N

Аннотация: Hard x-ray scattering experiments with a photon energy of 100 keV were performed as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field on selected compounds of the RFe3(BO3)4 family. The results show the presence of several diffraction features, in particular, nonresonant magnetic reflections in the magnetically ordered phase and structural reflections that violate the diffraction conditions for the low-temperature phase P3(1)21 of the rare-earth iron borates. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic superlattice reflections corroborate the magnetic structures of the borate compounds obtained by neutron diffraction. The detailed analysis of the intensity and scattering cross section of the magnetic reflection reveals details of the magnetic structure of these materials such as the spin domain structure of NdFe3(BO3)(4) and GdFe3(BO3)(4). Furthermore we find that the correlation length of the magnetic domains is around 100 angstrom for all the compounds and that the Fe moments are rotated 53 degrees +/- 3 degrees off from the hexagonal basal plane in GdFe3(BO3)(4).

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Resonance modes that are due to magnetic excitations in the exchange-coupled subsystems of rare-earth ions (R = Nd3+, Sm3+, and Gd3+) and Fe3+ ions have been detected in submillimeter transmission spectra (0.1-0.6 THz) of RFe3(BO3)(4) iron borate-multiferroic single crystals. The strong interaction between spin oscillations of the Fe and R subsystems has been revealed, which determines the behavior of the modes depending on the anisotropy of the exchange splitting of the ground doublet of the R ion. It has been shown that the intensities of coupled modes (contributions to the magnetic permeability) depend strongly on the difference between the g factors of Fe and R ions. This dependence makes it possible to determine the sign of the latter g factor. In particular, a noticeable intensity of exchange Nd modes in NdFe3(BO3)(4) is due to an increase in their contribution at g(perpendicular to,parallel to)(Nd) 0, while in GdFe3(BO3)(4) with g(Gd) approximate to g(Fe) approximate to 2, the Fe and Gd contributions compensate each other and the exchange (Gd) mode is not observed. In spite of the weak interaction of Sm ions with the magnetic field, SmFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits resonance modes, which are attributed to the excitation of Sm ions through the Fe subsystem. Аннотация: The structures of K 2(1-x)Rb 2xAl 2B 2O 7, x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, have been determined in space group P321 through Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. The solubility limit in K 2(1-x)Rb 2xAl 2B 2O 7 crystals has been estimated as x similar to 0.83-0.9. Nonlinear optical properties of KRbAl 2B 2O 7 have been verified by powder Kurtz-Perry method. Mechanisms of structural parameter variation in K 2Al 2B 2O 7 crystal family have been discussed.

Аннотация: A comparative study was performed of the low-temperature high-resolution absorption spectra of the Yb3+ probe in R1−xYbxAl3(BO3)4 (R = Y, Tm, Lu) crystals grown by flux technique independently in four different laboratories using different solvents. We show that the incorporation of solvent components into the crystal in the course of crystallization gives rise to spectral satellites of the Yb3+ 0(2F7/2) → 0′(2F5/2) absorption lines and assign particular satellites to the Yb3+ centers near the bismuth and molybdenum impurities (which decrease the transparency of YAB in the UV spectral range). We suggest this spectroscopic method for a rapid analysis of the quality of UV laser crystals and for improvement of growth technologies.

Аннотация: Various resonance modes were observed in the transmission spectra of rare-earth iron borates RFe 3(BO 3) 4 (R = Nd 3+, Sm 3+, Gd 3+) at the frequency range 100-600 GHz, which were attributed to collective magnetic excitations in the exchange coupled Fe- and R-subsystems, i.e. antiferromagnetic (Fe) resonance and electron transitions in the R-ions. Strong interaction of the Fe and R oscillations was revealed and theoretically analyzed taking into account feature of the R-ion ground state. Intensities of the coupled modes (contributions to magnetic permeability) strongly depend on a difference of Fe and R ions g-factors that allows defining the sign of the latter. In particular, an appreciable intensity of exchange (Nd) modes in NdFe 3(BO 3) 4 is caused by g Nd?,|| < 0 whereas in GdFe 3(BO 3) 4 with gGd ? gFe ? 2 the exchange (Gd) modes were hided due to compensation of Fe and Gd contributions. In SmFe 3(BO 3) 4, despite a negligible Sm g-factor, the Sm modes were clear observed due to their excitation via coupling with the Fe-subsystem. В© (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

Аннотация: Temperature dependent neutron diffraction studies were performed on SmFe3(BO3)4. The crystallographic structure was determined to stay as R32 over the whole studied temperature range of 2 K ‹ T ‹ 300 K. A magnetic phase transition characterized by the magnetic propagation vector κ = [0 0 3/2] takes place at TN = 34 K. The magnetic structure sees an easy-plane arrangement within the trigonal basal a–b-plane of ferromagnetic layers of iron and samarium having a canting angle of about 70° relative to each other. Neighbouring layers in the c-direction are antiferromagnetically coupled; at 2 K the magnetic moment values amount to μFe = 4.2(1) μB and μSm = 0.8(2) μB. The non-Brillouin type increase of the iron magnetic moment below TN points to a strong Fe–Sm exchange and to the simultaneous appearance of long range magnetic order on both sublattices.
