Coal mine -- land surface subsidence -- seismic measurements -- spaceborne radar interferometry
Аннотация: This paper presents results of a spaceborne radar interferometry technique application for land subsidence observations in a coal mining area in Kuzbass, Russia. Joint analysis of radar interferometry measurements with simultaneous seismic observations shows that the land subsidence is triggered by seismic events, both natural and caused by human underground activity. Surface displacements are linked typically to the boundaries of block structures and correlate with the location of clusters of seismic events.

SAR Interferometry (InSAR) -- SMAP -- ALOS -- permafrost -- Arctic tundra soil -- active layer -- freezing -- thawing -- soil temperature
Аннотация: In this paper, we study the effect of the layered structure of the active topsoil of the Arctic tundra during freezing on the error of determining surface deformation. A simple Bragg scattering model was used for surface scattering modeling. The simulation was performed in the L-band for future radar missions SMAP and ALOS-2. The soil permittivity is calculated using the temperature-dependent generalized refractive mixing dielectric model for the organic rich soil sample collected in North Slope, Alaska (68 degrees 38'N, 149 degrees 35'W). This model predicts the complex dielectric constant of moist soil both thawed and frozen at temperatures from -30 degrees C to +25 degrees C and moistures from 0 to 0.94 g/g. It is shown that the error of determining soil surface deformation, induced by processes of freezing of the permafrost active layer, does not exceed 1.5 cm.

high-nitrogen steel -- austenite -- tensile test -- impact bending test -- ductile-to-brittle transition -- internal stresses -- fracture
Аннотация: The paper presents the results of tensile and impact bending tests of 17%Cr-19%Mn-0.53%N high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel in temperatures ranging from −196 to 20 °C. The steel microstructure and fracture surfaces were investigated using transmission and scanning electron microscopes, as well as X-ray diffraction analysis. The steel experiences a ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT); however, it possessed high tensile and impact strength characteristics, as well as the ductile fracture behavior at temperatures down to −114 °C. The correspondence between γ–ε microstructure and fracture surface morphologies was revealed after the tensile test at the temperature of −196 °C. In this case, the transgranular brittle and layered fracture surface was induced by ε-martensite formation. Under the impact bending test at −196 °C, the brittle intergranular fracture occurred at the elastic deflection stage without significant plastic strains, which preceded a failure due to the high internal stresses localized at the boundaries of the austenite grains. The stresses were induced by: (i) segregation of nitrogen atoms at the grain boundaries and in the near-boundary regions, (ii) quenching stresses, and (iii) reducing fcc lattice volume with the test temperature decrease and incorporation of nitrogen atoms into fcc austenite lattice. Anisotropy of residual stresses was revealed. This was manifested in the localization of elastic deformations of the fcc lattice and, consequently, the stress localization in <100>-oriented grains; this is suggested to be the reason of brittle cleavage fracture.

titanium nickelide -- deformation -- martensitic transformation -- electron diffraction -- ferromagnetism -- clusters
Аннотация: This paper focuses on the processes of the occurrence of magnetization during structure formation in samples of Ni51Ti49 alloy under deformation conditions. The possibility of the existence of a phase with an FCC (face-centered cubic) lattice in titanium nickelide has been demonstrated by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It has been discovered that the interplanar distances of BCC110 (body-centered cubic), FCC111, and HCP002 (hexagonal close packed) in the alloy under study have similar values, which indicates the possibility of their mutual polymorphic transformation. Based on the modular self-organization, a scheme of martensitic transformations in titanium nickelide from the B2 structure (BCC lattice) to the B19' structure (HCP lattice) through an intermediate phase with an FCC lattice is proposed. It is shown that lenticular crystals appear in the Ni51Ti49 alloy under tensile deformation until rupture, which is accompanied by the onset of ferromagnetism. The effect of magnetization in Ni51Ti49 samples when immersed in liquid nitrogen has been also discovered. In this case, the reason for the appearance and disappearance of magnetization can be associated with microdeformation processes caused by direct and reverse martensitic transitions that occur during cooling and heating of the samples.

Аннотация: The structure, mechanical characteristics and mechanisms of plastic deformation of stainless austenitic steel 12Cr15Mn9NiCu after high-temperature cross and screw and cold longitudinal rolling are examined with the help of mechanical testing, X-ray diffraction and electron transmission microscopy. It is shown that deformation martensitic transformations are the main mechanisms of deformation at temperatures less than 20 °C. The modes of thermomechanical treatment, which allow to obtain a good combination of strength and plastic properties in steel have been found out.

Аннотация: The effect of isolated vacancies on the elastic properties of a graphene sheet has been investigated by the ab initio density functional method. An almost inverse linear dependence of the Young's modulus on the concentration of vacancies has been revealed. The height of potential barriers for the motion of vacancies in various directions has been calculated as a function of various independent applied strains. The velocity of vacancies at various temperatures has been calculated as a function of applied strains using the transition state theory. DOI: 10.1134/S1063776111040042

Nanoparticle -- Adsorption layer -- Elastic deformation -- Coagulation kinetics -- Elasticity modulus
Аннотация: The Brownian dynamics method is employed to study the formation of an electrical double layer (EDL) on the metal nanoparticle (NP) surface in hydrosols during adsorption of electrolyte ions from the interparticle medium. Also studied is the charge accumulation by NPs in the Stern layer. To simulate the process of the formation of EDL, we took into account the effect of image forces and specific adsorption, dissipative and random forces, and the degree of hydration of adsorbed ions on the EDL structure. The employed model makes it possible to determine the charge of NPs and the structure of EDL. For the first time, the charge of both the diffuse part of EDL and the dense Stern layer has been determined. A decrease in the electrolyte concentration (below c ˂ 0.1 mol/l) has been found to result in dramatic changes in the formation of the Stern layer.
