Аннотация: In this Reply we show that, contrary to the suggestion of Dubroca, Hack, and Hummel (DHH), the feature observed at ca. 55 K in the magnetic susceptibility of gadolinium-containing oxide glasses [as in our earlier paper, Kliava Phys. Rev. B 71, 104406 (2005)] cannot be due to a magnetic transition in oxygen contaminant. In support of this statement, we supply transformed data at low Gd content as well as magnetization curves for a series of glasses containing dysprosium oxide measured with the same superconducting quantum interference device as in our earlier paper. In all these cases the feature in question is absent. Thus, our previous assignment of the 55 K feature to a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition in Gd clusters in the glass remains the only one consistent with the experimental results.

Аннотация: Gadolinium manganese sulfide solid solutions are investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Longitudinal optical–transverse optical splitting of the manganese–sulfur bond vibration is observed in the vibrational spectra. The Raman spectra contain modes that are prohibited in the crystal structure of the alpha phase of manganese sulfide, which are associated with activation of the phonons from both the Brillouin zone center and its X and L points. The concentration dependence of transverse optical and longitudinal optical modes’ frequencies is calculated within the frame of the modified random-element-isodisplacement model, being in good agreement with the experimental results. Both theory and experiment show that the solid solution under study exhibits a “one-mode” behavior. © 2017 Taylor & Francis.

Аннотация: The specific heat was measured in the range 0.4-300 K in YFe3(BO3)(4), Y0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)(4), and GdFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals. Sharp anomalies were found at temperatures of first-order structural, second-order antiferromagnetic, and first-order spin-reorientational transitions. A Neel temperature of about 37 K was found to be virtually independent of presence of rare-earth ions, indicating rather weak coupling of Gd and Fe subsystems. The contribution of the magnetic system to specific heat was separated through the scaling procedure allowing determination of the magnetic entropy of Fe and Gd subsystems. At the lowest temperatures, the specific heat in GdFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits a Schottky-type anomaly, which is due to Gd3+ eightfold degenerate ground-level splitting by the internal magnetic field of the Fe subsystem of about 7 T.

Аннотация: The optical properties and structure of gadolinium iron borate GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystals are studied at high pressures produced in diamond-anvil cells. X-ray diffraction data obtained at a pressure of 25.6 GPa reveal a first-order phase transition retaining the trigonal symmetry and increasing the unit cell volume by 8%. The equation of state is obtained and the compressibility of the crystal is estimated before and after the phase transition. The optical spectra reveal two electronic transitions at pressures similar to26 GPa and similar to43 GPa. Upon the first transition, the optical gap decreases jumpwise from 3.1 to similar to2.25 eV. Upon the second transition at P = 43 GPa, the optical gap deceases down to similar to0.7 eV, demonstrating a dielectric-semiconductor transition. By using the theoretical model developed for a FeBO3 crystal and taking into account some structural analogs of these materials, the anomalies of the high-pressure optical spectra are explained. Аннотация: The optical spectra and the second-harmonic generation (SHG) are studied in a noncentrosymmetric GdFe3(BO3)(4) magnet. In the region of weak absorption (alpha similar to 20-400 cm(-1)) below similar to3 eV, three absorption bands are distinguished, which can be unambiguously assigned to forbidden electronic transitions from the ground (6)A(1) state of the Fe3+ ion to its excited states T-4(1) (similar to1.4 eV), T-4(2) (similar to2 eV), and (4)A(1), E-4 (similar to2.8 eV). Intense absorption begins in the region above 3 eV (alpha similar to 2-4 x 10(5) cm(-1)), where two bands at similar to4.0 and 4.8 eV are observed, which are caused by allowed electric dipole charge-transfer transitions. The spectral features of SHG in the 1.2-3.0-eV region are explained by a change in the SHG efficiency caused by a change in the phase mismatch. It is shown that in the weak absorption region, phase matching can be achieved for SHG. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption have been studied in a glass system 20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2 + GeO2) with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+ ions. Computer simulations of the EPR spectra show that the short-range ordering in the environment of the Gd3+ ions is well preserved. The relative distribution widths of the ligand coordinates are less than 2%. In the more heavily doped glasses the EPR spectra are superpositions of signals arising from isolated ions and ferromagnetic clusters. The increase of Gd3+ concentration is shown to change substantially the strong optical absorption edge while only small changes of f-f absorption band characteristics are observed. This difference is associated with the different effect of the Gd ion clustering on the mechanisms of the strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and the f-f absorption.

Аннотация: Antiferromagnetic resonance in single crystals of rhombohedral gadolinium ferroborate GdFe3(BO3)(4) was studied. The frequency-field dependences of antiferromagnetic resonance over the frequency range 26-70 GHz and the temperature dependences of resonance parameters for magnetic fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane were determined. It was found that the iron subsystem, which can be treated as a two-sublattice antiferromagnet with anisotropy of the easy-plane type, experienced ordering at T = 38 K. At temperatures below 20 K, the gadolinium subsystem with the opposite anisotropy sign strongly influenced the anisotropic properties of the crystal. This resulted in a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition from the easy-plane to the easy-axis state at 10 K. Below 10 K, magnetic field-induced transitions between the states were observed. Experimental phase diagrams on the temperature-magnetic field plane were constructed for fields oriented along the crystal axis and in the basal plane. A simple model was used to calculate the critical transition fields. The results were in close agreement with the experimental values measured at T = 4.2 K for both field orientations. Аннотация: The Gd-containing metallofullerene derivatives are perspective magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. We studied the bioeffects of a water-soluble fullerene derivative, gadolinium-endohedral fullerenol, with 40–42 oxygen groups (Gd@Fln). Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays were applied to monitor toxicity and antioxidant activity of Gd@Fln in model solutions; bioluminescence was applied as a signaling physiological parameter. The Gd@Fln inhibited bioluminescence at high concentrations (2·10−1 gL−1), revealing lower toxicity as compared to the previously studied fullerenols. Efficient activation of bioluminescence (up to almost 100%) and consumption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial suspension were observed under low-concentration exposure to Gd@Fln (10−3–2·10−1 gL−1). Antioxidant capability of Gd@Fln was studied under conditions of model oxidative stress (i.e., solutions of model organic and inorganic oxidizers); antioxidant coefficients of Gd@Fln were determined at different concentrations and times of exposure. Contents of ROS were evaluated and correlations with toxicity/antioxidant coefficients were determined. The bioeffects of Gd@Fln were explained by hydrophobic interactions, electron affinity, and disturbing of ROS balance in the bioluminescence systems. The results contribute to understanding the molecular mechanism of “hormetic” cellular responses. Advantages of the bioluminescence assays to compare bioeffects of fullerenols based on their structural characteristics were demonstrated.
