Аннотация: Gadolinium (Gd)-containing fullerenols are perspective agents for magnetic resonance imaging and cancer research. They combine the unique paramagnetic properties of Gd with solubility in water, low toxicity and antiradical activity of fullerenols. We compared the bioeffects of two Gd-containing fullerenols with a different number of oxygen groups—20 and 42: Gd@C82O20H14 and Gd@C82O42H32. The bioluminescent bacteria-based assay was applied to monitor the toxicity of fullerenols, bioluminescence was applied as a signal physiological parameter, and bacterial enzyme-based assay was used to evaluate the fullerenol effects on enzymatic intracellular processes. Chemiluminescence luminol assay was applied to monitor the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial and enzymatic media. It was shown that Gd@C82O42H32 and Gd@C82O20H14 inhibited bacterial bioluminescence at >10?1 and >10?2 gL?1, respectively, revealing a lower toxicity of Gd@C82O42H32. Low-concentration (10?3–10?1 gL?1) bacterial bioluminescence activation by Gd@C82O42H32 was observed, while this activation was not found under exposure to Gd@C82O20H14. Additional carboxyl groups in the structure of Gd@C82O42H32 were determined by infrared spectroscopy and confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. The groups were supposed to endow Gd@C82O42H32 with higher penetration ability through the cellular membrane, activation ability, lower toxicity, balancing of the ROS content in the bacterial suspensions, and lower aggregation in aqueous media.

Аннотация: The objectives of this study were to refine the phase diagram of the GdF3-Gd2S3 system and to calculate their liquidus, and to synthesize GdSF and to study their properties. The GdSF compound (ST PbFCl, P4/nmm, a (Å) 3.83006(17), c (Å) 6.8529(3), has an optical band gap for a direct interband transition of 2.56 ​eV and is characterized by a pronounced increase in the Kubelka-Munk function in the region of this transition. Direct optical bandgap of GdSF is measured to be equal to 2.77 ​eV. Two indirect bandgaps are detected to be 1.54 and 2.4 ​eV. Meta-GGA simulations of band structure predicting 1.481 ​eV direct bandgap of GdSF are in good agreement with these features of the experimental absorption spectrum. To explain this complicated case, we argue that formally direct optical transitions to highly dispersive subbands contribute not to direct but to indirect bandgaps measured by Tauc analysis. The GdSF compound melts incongruently with the formation of a melt and γ-Gd2S3 compound at t ​= ​1280 ​± ​2°С, ΔН ​= ​40.6 ​± ​2.8 ​kJ/mol, ΔS ​= ​26.1 ​± ​1.8 ​J/mol∗K. The eutectic has a composition of 13 ​mol.% Gd2S3 (0.74 GdF3 ​+ ​0.26 GdSF), the melting characteristics of the eutectic are 1182 ​± ​2°С, ΔН ​= ​36.2 ​± ​2.5 ​kJ/mol, ΔS ​= ​24.9 ​± ​1.7 ​J/mol∗K. In the system GdF3 - Gd2S3 the balance equations for five phase transformations recorded by the DSC method were compiled. Convergence was achieved in the liquidus of the system constructed according to DSC data and calculated with the use of the Redlich-Kister equation.

Аннотация: Методом твердофазных реакций обжигом на воздухе стехиометрических смесей PbO, Gd2O3, GeO2 и V2O5 в интервале температур 773–1073 K синтезированы апатиты Pb10-xGdx(GeO4)2+x(VO4)4-x (x = 0.5, 1.0). С использованием рентгеноструктурного анализа определена их кристаллическая структура. Методом дифференциальной сканирующей калориметрии измерена высокотемпературная теплоемкость (350–1000 K). По экспериментальным данным Cp = f(T) рассчитаны термодинамические свойства апатитов.
The Pb10-xGdx(GeO4)2+x(VO4)4-x (x = 0.5, 1.0) apatites were synthesized by the solid-phase synthesis by roasting stoichiometric mixtures of PbO, Gd2O3, GeO2, and V2O5 in air at temperatures of 773–1073 K. Their crystal structure was determined using X‑ray diffraction analysis. The high-temperature heat capacity (350–1000 K) was measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The experimental data Cp = f (T) were used to calculate the thermodynamic properties of apatites.

Аннотация: The Gd-containing metallofullerene derivatives are perspective magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. We studied the bioeffects of a water-soluble fullerene derivative, gadolinium-endohedral fullerenol, with 40–42 oxygen groups (Gd@Fln). Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays were applied to monitor toxicity and antioxidant activity of Gd@Fln in model solutions; bioluminescence was applied as a signaling physiological parameter. The Gd@Fln inhibited bioluminescence at high concentrations (>2·10−1 gL−1), revealing lower toxicity as compared to the previously studied fullerenols. Efficient activation of bioluminescence (up to almost 100%) and consumption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial suspension were observed under low-concentration exposure to Gd@Fln (10−3–2·10−1 gL−1). Antioxidant capability of Gd@Fln was studied under conditions of model oxidative stress (i.e., solutions of model organic and inorganic oxidizers); antioxidant coefficients of Gd@Fln were determined at different concentrations and times of exposure. Contents of ROS were evaluated and correlations with toxicity/antioxidant coefficients were determined. The bioeffects of Gd@Fln were explained by hydrophobic interactions, electron affinity, and disturbing of ROS balance in the bioluminescence systems. The results contribute to understanding the molecular mechanism of “hormetic” cellular responses. Advantages of the bioluminescence assays to compare bioeffects of fullerenols based on their structural characteristics were demonstrated.

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of experimental measurements of constitutive and electrophysical properties in hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene with gadolinium sample. We extracted endohedral metallofullerene from carbon condensate, synthesized in high-frequency arc discharge plasma. Later hydroxyl groups were added. Via methods of infrared and x-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, it was established that the molecules of hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene have the Gd@C82Ox(OH)y, x + y=(40–42) composition. The method of measuring the electrical impedance in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz shows that the resulting hydroxylated fullerene is an ion conductor. The measured frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity and conductivity of hydroxylated fullerene are explained based on the assumption of an inhomogeneous distribution of electric charges in the material volume. Dielectric-hysteresis loops in the frequency range of 25 Hz–1 MHz and temperature range of 80–300 K, and volt-ampere characteristics were measured. The obtained results imply the appearance of residual polarization induced by the electric field in hydroxylated fullerene. However, the constant dipole moment is absent. © 2019

Аннотация: A remarkable characteristic of borate glasses is the ability of forming magnetic nanoparticles at low doping with transition element oxides. We have studied structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles formed in borate glasses, in particular, concentration and temperature dependences of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra. A series of glasses of molar composition 22.5K2O-22.5Al2O3–55B2O3 doped with 1.5 mass % of Fe2O3 and different contents of Gd2O3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mass % was prepared using a conventional melt quenching technique and subjected to an additional thermal treatment. The whole set of results allows to identify the predominant magnetic phase in these glasses as ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, with a considerable part of iron ions substituted by gadolinium. Analysis and computer simulations of the EMR spectra allow separating the contribution of electron paramagnetic resonance of diluted iron ions and together with the temperature dependences of magnetization demonstrate a superparamagnetic character of the nanoparticle magnetism.

Аннотация: Gadolinium manganese sulfide solid solutions are investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Longitudinal optical–transverse optical splitting of the manganese–sulfur bond vibration is observed in the vibrational spectra. The Raman spectra contain modes that are prohibited in the crystal structure of the alpha phase of manganese sulfide, which are associated with activation of the phonons from both the Brillouin zone center and its X and L points. The concentration dependence of transverse optical and longitudinal optical modes’ frequencies is calculated within the frame of the modified random-element-isodisplacement model, being in good agreement with the experimental results. Both theory and experiment show that the solid solution under study exhibits a “one-mode” behavior. © 2017 Taylor & Francis.

Аннотация: The structural, magnetic, and thermophysical properties of cation-substituted sulfides GdXMn1-XS (0.04 ? X ? 0.25) with the NaCl-type face-centered cubic lattice have been investigated. The range of existence of long-range antiferromagnetic order has been established. The anomalies observed in the temperature dependence of the specific heat correspond to the temperatures of the magnetic phase transition. The anomaly in the specific heat caused by electron transitions between the 4f levels and d band states has been observed. It has been found that the coefficient of thermal expansion decreases with increasing concentration of substituents in the magnetically ordered region and remains nearly invariable in the paramagnetic phase. Аннотация: Bacterial culture Klebsiella oxytoca was grown in a Lovley medium at various concentrations of gadolinium salt. Biogenic magnetic nanoparticles of ferrihydrite were investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization curves were obtained. The results of structural studies showed that iron Fe(5) takes new position when cultivating is carried out in medium with high concentrations of gadolinium. It was found that gadolinium is fit into the crystal structure of ferrihydrite. These results are consistent with the analysis of the magnetization curves.

Аннотация: Various resonance modes were observed in the transmission spectra of rare-earth iron borates RFe 3(BO 3) 4 (R = Nd 3+, Sm 3+, Gd 3+) at the frequency range 100-600 GHz, which were attributed to collective magnetic excitations in the exchange coupled Fe- and R-subsystems, i.e. antiferromagnetic (Fe) resonance and electron transitions in the R-ions. Strong interaction of the Fe and R oscillations was revealed and theoretically analyzed taking into account feature of the R-ion ground state. Intensities of the coupled modes (contributions to magnetic permeability) strongly depend on a difference of Fe and R ions g-factors that allows defining the sign of the latter. In particular, an appreciable intensity of exchange (Nd) modes in NdFe 3(BO 3) 4 is caused by g Nd?,|| < 0 whereas in GdFe 3(BO 3) 4 with gGd ? gFe ? 2 the exchange (Gd) modes were hided due to compensation of Fe and Gd contributions. In SmFe 3(BO 3) 4, despite a negligible Sm g-factor, the Sm modes were clear observed due to their excitation via coupling with the Fe-subsystem. В© (2012) Trans Tech Publications.

Аннотация: The structural, magnetic, electrical, and thermoelectric properties of GdXMn1-XS (0.01 <= X <= 0.3) solid solutions synthesized for the first time on the basis of alpha-MnS have been studied experimentally in the temperature range 77-1000 K in magnetic fields up to 10 kOe. The synthesized samples are antiferromagnetic semiconductors with an NaCl-type cubic lattice typical of a-MnS. Both concentration (X-c = 0.3) and temperature (T-c = 450 K) metal-insulator phase transitions have been observed. The concentration metal-insulator transition is accompanied by a decrease in resistivity and thermopower by twelve and two orders of magnitude, respectively, with the change in conductivity from p-type to n-type. Аннотация: The X-ray diffraction, magnetization and electrical conductivity measurements for Gd(0.9)A(0.1)CoO(3-delta) (A = Ba, Sr) have been made. The complicated magnetic behavior, including the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transitions, was found for Ba- and Sr-doped samples. The gradual insulator-metal transitions were observed in a wide temperature range T = 600-800 K. Аннотация: We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)(4). Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd L-II,L-III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at T-N approximate to 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below T-N, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T approximate to 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at T-SR approximate to 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated similar to 45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the absorption spectra and magnetic circular dichroism due to f-f transitions from the H-6(15/2) to F-6 (5/2) and (6)(F (7/2) + H (5/2)) states in the Dy3+ ion in (Dy2O3-P2O5-SiO2-GeO2) and (Dy2O3-La2O3-Al2O3-B2O3-SiO2-GeO2) glasses and the temperature dependence of the Faraday effect were studied. The temperature dependence of the Faraday effect caused by f-d transitions was found to differ from that of the magnetic circular dichroism due to f-f transitions. It was shown that f-f transitions occur preferentially in Dy3+ ions associated into clusters. The origin of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity of f-f transitions was analyzed. It was shown that the contributions to this activity can differ in value and sign and that the ratio between these contributions depends on the transition type. In some cases, this difference results in an anomalous temperature dependence of the magneto-optical activity.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, EPR and optical properties have been studied in a glass system {20La(2)O(3) - 22Al(2)O(3) - 23B(2)O(3) - 35(SiO2 + GeO2)} with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses; two magnetic transitions at 55 and 12 K have been detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters of Gd3+ ions. The EPR spectra confirm the clustering at higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance indicates an onset of magnetic anisotropy. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge.

Аннотация: In this Reply we show that, contrary to the suggestion of Dubroca, Hack, and Hummel (DHH), the feature observed at ca. 55 K in the magnetic susceptibility of gadolinium-containing oxide glasses [as in our earlier paper, Kliava Phys. Rev. B 71, 104406 (2005)] cannot be due to a magnetic transition in oxygen contaminant. In support of this statement, we supply transformed data at low Gd content as well as magnetization curves for a series of glasses containing dysprosium oxide measured with the same superconducting quantum interference device as in our earlier paper. In all these cases the feature in question is absent. Thus, our previous assignment of the 55 K feature to a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition in Gd clusters in the glass remains the only one consistent with the experimental results.
