Аннотация: The thermodynamic properties of alumoborate TmAl3(BO3)4 single crystal are studied experimentally and theoretically. A theoretical analysis based on the crystal field model makes it possible to interpret all measured parameters. The crystal field parameters are determined. The temperature (3–300 K) and field (up to 9 T) dependences of magnetization are described. The field and temperature dependences of multipole moments of the Tm3+ ion in TmAl3(BO3)4 make it possible to describe magnetostriction and low-temperature anomalies in thermal expansion.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Аннотация: Europium gallium garnet (EuGG) single crystals were grown from fluxes with various contents. Optical absorption spectra of EuGG grown from a flux containing calcium show an additional band in the ultraviolet and blue regions of the spectra as compared to the case of a calcium-free flux. Mossbauer spectra of the samples grown from the fluxes with different additives show no signs of other valence states of the europium ions except for 3+. However, they indicate changes in the crystal field due to the entrance of additive ions. The nature of the additional absorption must be the same as that for calcium-doped gadolinium gallium garnet, i.e., anion vacancies. Mossbauer isotope shifts and quadrupole splitting for EuGG are determined. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: The transport properties of the two phases composites based on Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and Y-3(Al1-xFex)(5)O-12 (X = 0-0... 1.0) have been studied to investigate the effect of magnetic ordering in garnet on superconducting properties of the composites. The composites represent network of Josephson junctions where the non-superconducting ingredient (garnet) acts as barriers separating YBCO grains. It is found that magneto-active ions (Fe) in garnet are responsible for an additional suppression of Josephson coupling in the composites. At some critical concentration of Fe atoms full suppression of super current is observed in a temperature range from T-C of YBCO grains down to the characteristic temperature T,,,. This behavior is attributed to the interaction of super current carriers with spins of Fe atoms located in the barriers. The crossover from S-I-S (S-superconductor, I-insulator) to S-F-S (F-ferrimagnet) junctions is observed in the compdsites Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y-3(Al1-xFex)(5)O-12 with x increase. Аннотация: The Zeeman effect in the F-7(6) - D-5(4) absorption band of the Tb3+ ion in the paramagnetic garnets Tb3Ga5O12 and Tb3Al5O12 was Studied. The field dependences of the Zeeman splitting of some absorption lines arc found to exhibit unusual behavior: as the magnetic field increases, the hand splitting decreases rather than increases. Symmetry analysis relates these lines to 4f - 4f electron transitions of the doublet-quasi-doublet or quasi-doublet-doublet type, for which the field dependences of the splitting differ radically from the well-known field dependences of the Zeeman splitting for quasi-doublet-quasi-doublet or quasi-doublet-singlet transitions in a longitudinal magnetic field.

Аннотация: The method to investigate "single-ion" exchange anisotropy (as predicted by the pair model) is treated by exploration of several isostructural diamagnetic crystals containing magnetic impurities. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra were observed for ferric borate isostructural crystals MBO(3): Fe(3+) (M = Ga, In, Lu, Sc). The experimental dependences of the spin-Hamiltonian axial parameters of the second-order D(S) and fourth-order (a-F)(cS) versus total pair spin S are presented. The contributions arising from the distortion of the parent crystal lattice MBO3 under magnetic dilution are estimated. The microscopic derived expressions for the "single-ion" contribution to the anisotropy are also presented. The present experimental data enable estimation of the "single- ion" exchange contribution for FeBO(3), MnCO(3), and alpha-Fe(2)O(3) crystals at T= 0 K. The quantitative estimations for EPR are in satisfactory agreement among themselves and with the experimental data.

Аннотация: Composites Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y3Fe5O12 modeling random network superconductor-ferrimagnetic-superconductor have been prepared and their transport properties (temperature dependences of resistivity rho and critical current density j(c), current-voltage characteristics) have been studied. Below the superconducting transition temperature T-m the rho(T) dependences exhibit a kink at some temperature T-m. The crossover of current-voltage characteristics from ohmic-like behavior in range T-m/T-c to non-linear one below T-m is observed. Transport properties of the 'benchmark' composites Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y3Al5O12 are typical for network superconductor-insulator-superconductor Josephson junction. The behavior observed for Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y3Fe5O12 composites is attributed to peculiarities of supercurrent carriers tunnelling through ferrimagnetic barriers. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Аннотация: Highly efficient phosphors with thermal stability and color-tunable emission are required for the fabrication of phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). Currently developed engineering strategies are generally successful in photoluminescence tuning but, unfortunately, suffer severe deterioration in emission intensity/efficiency and/or thermal stability. Herein, an efficient aliovalent substitution strategy toward reinforced structural rigidity is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. By incorporating Be2+ ion into the garnet-type Lu2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+ phosphor, the phosphor shows enhanced internal/external quantum efficiency, from 79.2%/26.7% to 84.5%/32.9%, photoluminescence tuning from green (peaking at ∼512 nm) to yellow (peaking at ∼552 nm), and zero thermal quenching, even up to 200 °C. The Be2+ substitution at the Al2/Si2 site enables stable and rigid local surroundings around the Ce3+ activator, which is responsible for the unprecedented performance. In addition, high-quality warm WLED devices with a luminous efficiency of 158.1 lm W-1, correlated color temperature of 3858 K and high color rendering index of 81.7, are obtained by combining Lu2SrAl4SiO12:Ce3+,Be2+ as the yellow emitter, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ as the red emitter and a blue-emitting InGaN chip. These findings highlight a new strategy for performance optimization of LED phosphors by selecting rigid covalent compounds with further reinforced structural rigidity via aliovalent substitution.
