Аннотация: A remarkable characteristic of borate glasses is the ability of forming magnetic nanoparticles at low doping with transition element oxides. We have studied structure and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles formed in borate glasses, in particular, concentration and temperature dependences of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectra. A series of glasses of molar composition 22.5K2O-22.5Al2O3–55B2O3 doped with 1.5 mass % of Fe2O3 and different contents of Gd2O3 from 0.1 to 1.0 mass % was prepared using a conventional melt quenching technique and subjected to an additional thermal treatment. The whole set of results allows to identify the predominant magnetic phase in these glasses as ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, with a considerable part of iron ions substituted by gadolinium. Analysis and computer simulations of the EMR spectra allow separating the contribution of electron paramagnetic resonance of diluted iron ions and together with the temperature dependences of magnetization demonstrate a superparamagnetic character of the nanoparticle magnetism.

Аннотация: Results are presented from studying the X-ray diffraction, heat capacities, dielectric permittivities, and coefficients of the volumetric thermal expansion of composite materials obtained by embedding of Rb2ZnCl4 salt into the porous matrices of borosilicate glass with average pore diameters of 46 and 320 nm in the temperature range of 120–350 K. The temperatures of transitions to the incommensurate and ferroelectric phases are determined, along with the freezing temperature of the mobility of domain boundaries in Rb2ZnCl4 particles. A substantial increase in their Curie temperature is observed.

Аннотация: The ϵ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in borate glasses co-doped with low concentrations of Fe2O3 and Gd2O3 were investigated with two experimental techniques-visible magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The most prominent features of the MCD spectra are: non-linear dependence of the spectral maxima intensities on the Gd concentration and strong increase with the temperature decrease. The ESR spectra of these glasses exhibit two features with g = 4.3 due to the diluted Fe3+ ions and 2.0 associated both with Fe3+ ions and with nanoparticles. The integrated spectra intensities do not follow the T-1 Curie law suggesting a considerable contribution from the magnetically ordered nanoparticles to ESR. Analysis of the MCD and ESR concentration dependences allow suggestion on the Gd ions incorporation into nanoparticles.

Аннотация: The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of f-f transitions (6)H(15/2) -> (6)F(3/2), (6)F(5/2), (6)(F(7/2) + H(5/2)) and (6)(F(9/2) + H(7/2)) in Dy(3+) ion were studied in the glasses: Dy(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) and Dy(2)O(3)-La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3)-B(2)O(3)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) with different concentrations of Dy(3+) ions in temperature range 100-300 K. :Basing on this data, absolute values and temperature dependences of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity (MOA) of the transitions were determined. The origin of the MOA of f-f transitions was analyzed with the help of two models. In the first model, MOA is considered as a consequence of admixture of states with opposite parity by odd components of crystal field. The second approach is based on the Judd-Ofelt theory. The same f-f transitions reveal different values and temperature dependences in different glasses, what testifies to a different symmetry of the nearest environment of Dy(3+) ions in these glasses.

Аннотация: The crystallization of SrO center dot 2B(2)O(3) glasses has been studied. Four different crystalline formations were found to form simultaneously and independently on the glass surface: stable alpha-SrB4O7 crystals and metastable crystalline forms (beta-SrB4O7, Sr4B14O25, and spherulites (presumably, mixtures of crystalline phases)). The ranges of thermal stability of the newly formed metastable phases have been established using thermal analysis.

Аннотация: Faraday rotation (FR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of nanocomposite structures based on potassium-aluminum-germanium-boron glasses co-doped with Fe and rare earth (RE) or Y+Bi oxides have been studied. Formation of magnetic nanoparticles as a result of the glass heat treatment ensures them magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of magnetically ordered substances. At the same time, glasses keep transparence in visual spectral range owing to low paramagnetic oxides concentration. FR and MCD spectra of the heat treated glasses are shown to be very close to those of gamma-Fe(2)O(3) and practically independent of the RE element nature for the light wave energies lower than 22000 cm(-1). For higher energies, the MCD spectrum shape depends strongly an RE what evidences the different origin of magneto-optical effects in two spectral ranges.
