Аннотация: A kinetic model of fullerene formation in the carbon-helium plasma of an arc discharge was proposed. In the model, in addition to the coagulation of carbon clusters, the cluster isomerization and their cooling with a buffer gas were taken into account. The simulation results of the fullerene formation are in qualitatively agreement with the experimental data, i.e., the fraction of higher fullerenes increases at high pressures in the fullerene mixture.

Аннотация: The samples with the CaFe2O4-type crystal structure were obtained by the solid-state reaction method at 1000 °C in the air and the helium atmosphere for the first time. We investigated the modification of the structural and electronic properties of the obtained samples. Mössbauer, XAFS-, XPS-spectroscopies, and dc-, ac-conductivity measurements were carried out. Mössbauer and XAFS-spectroscopies showed that the local environment of Fe and Ca cations does not change in the case of the inert atmosphere synthesis. Nevertheless, a sharp six-order increase in the electrical resistance observed at room temperature for the sample obtained in the in the helium atmosphere. Moreover, calculated from dc-conductivity data activation energy rises from 0.327 for the air-synthesized sample to 0.585 eV for helium-obtained one. This behavior indicates significant modification of in-band-gap energy structure, which correlated with thermally activated charge carriers. Our ac-conductivity measurements in the frequency range of 1 kHz–2 MHz for the CaFe2O4 obtained in the air showed the presence of defect levels in the energy band structure. Oxygen pressure reduction during the synthesis results in levels vanishing. Therefore, we suppose the key role of oxygen atoms in the transport properties of the material, which is indirectly confirmed by XPS data. In prospect, CaFe2O4 can be used in promising gas analyzers.

Аннотация: The results of the effect of helium pressure in the chamber on the amount and composition of the produced fullerenes (C60, C70, etc.) synthesized in the arc plasma with graphite electrodes are presented. The findings obtained when the arc is powered by a direct (DC) and alternating (AC) currents of low frequency were compared in the same chamber with the electrodes located at the same angle to each other. These two methods are drastically different. The complete conversion of graphite into fullerene soot in AC occurs, but a part of the graphite is converted into a cathode deposit that does not contain fullerenes in DC, the relative amount of which increases when decreasing the helium pressure in the chamber. The highest fullerene content in fullerene soot of 10.2 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 127.5 kPa in AC arc, but in DC arc, the highest content of fullerenes in fullerene soot of 8.3 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 33.3 kPa.

Аннотация: Uniaxially oriented films of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals (PELCs) possess strong light-scattering anisotropy. The macroscopic transmittance anisotropy in uniaxially oriented PELC films can be strengthened by adding dichroic dyes to the LC drops. The ratio T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to of the principal components of the optical transmittance polarized perpendicular and parallel to the orientation of the PELCs, respectively, has been measured for He-Ne laser radiation transmitted through uniaxially oriented samples. The experiments showed that the transmittance anisotropy T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to for samples doped with dye is greater than the anisotropy caused only by light scattering. Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of a niobium nitride (NbN) film prepared by reactive sputtering onto a quartz substrate are investigated. It is shown using scanning electron microscopy that the film has a columnar structure with a diameter of crystallite columns of about 50 nm. The film magnetization loops are measured for the field orientation parallel and perpendicular to its surface. Based on the experimental data, the critical current densities of the film are estimated in both cases. For the field parallel to the film surface, the estimate is 6.5 × 104 A/cm2 at the liquid helium temperature. For the field perpendicular to the surface, the critical current density is close to the depairing current density (107 A/cm2). Analysis of the results based on different models of magnetic vortex pinning in superconductors shows that in the former case, pinning occurs at the boundaries of columns in the bulk of the sample, while in the latter case, it is determined by the influence of the surface barrier.
