Аннотация: The behaviour of methoxy benzylidene butyl aniline (MBBA) nematic liquid crystal on the;cleavage surface of triglycine sulphate under a strong magnetic field has been investigated. With the saturation regime obtained for the liquid crystal cell in fields up to 100 kOe, for the first time the possibility appears to determine not only the ordinary anchoring coefficient W-2, but the effective anchoring energy W* without any fitting procedure. Considerable difference in these parameters (two orders of magnitude) disagrees with "electrical" corrections of the Rapini-Papoular approximation. This discrepancy is connected with the surface polarization caused by spontaneous ordering of longitudinal components of MBBA molecular dipoles on interface. The form of the anisotropic interaction potential for such interfaces has to take into account polar effects in near-surface layers of the liquid crystal. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: We discuss electron transport through a semiconductor superlattice subject to an electric field parallel to, and a magnetic field perpendicular to, the growth axis using a semiclassical balance equation model. We find that the current-voltage characteristic becomes multistable in a large magnetic field; furthermore, hot electrons display novel features in their current-voltage characteristic, including absolute negative conductivity and a spontaneously generated de current at zero bias. Аннотация: To describe a multilayer structure with arbitrary thicknesses of the interfaces between layers, we introduce a model in which the dependence of a material parameter along the axis of such a superlattice is described by a Jacobian elliptic sine function. Depending on the value of the modulus kappa of the elliptic function, the model describes the limiting cases of multilayers with sharp interfaces (kappa=1, d/l=0, where d is the thickness of the interface, l is the period of the superlattice) and of sinusoidal superlattices (kappa=0, d/l=1/4), as Well as all intermediate situations. We investigate the wave spectrum in such a superlattice. The dependences of the widths of the gaps in the spectrum at the boundaries of ail odd Brillouin zones on the ratio d/l are found. It is shown that the thicknesses of the interfaces can be determined if the experimental value of the relation between the widths of the first gap Delta v(1) and any other gap Delta v(n) is known.

Аннотация: The preparation., processing and characterization of the composite materials on high-T-c superconductor (HTSC) basis, YBa2Cu3O7/Ag and Y0.75Lu0.25Ba2Cu3O7/BaPbO3, is reported. The initial components YBa2Cu3O7 and BaPbO3 were prepared by the standard solid state reaction technique. The microstructures of the samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy. whilst the XRD paterns of the composites HTSC+Ag and HTSC+BaPbO3 revealed the 123 superconducting phase and the Ag or BaPbO3 structure. The chemical compositions of the powders and the interface zone were found by employing energy dispersive spectrometry. The resistive and magnetic measurements of the composites indicated the transition temperature 93.5 K. Application of such composite materials in the construction of a superconducting fault current limiter model is reported. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Bulk Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + BaPb1-xFexO3 composites representing a model of a network of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junctions with paramagnetic impurities (Fe) in the N layers have been prepared. The transport properties of the composites have been studied. An exponential decay of the critical current with increasing Fe content in the non-superconducting ingredient of the composite has been observed. Such a behaviour is accounted for in terms of the de Gennes proximity effect theory.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
Crystal structure -- Magnetization -- Manganese compounds -- Phase interfaces -- X ray diffraction -- Manganese oxide -- Space groups -- Temperature range -- Single crystals
Аннотация: A Pb(3)Mn(7)O(15) single crystal has been grown by the flux method and studied using x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. The crystal is hexagonal (P6(3)/mcm space group, Z = 4) and exhibits a pronounced layered nature. Along the [001] direction (c axis), the structure consists of layers of edge-sharing MnO(6) octahedra. Pairs of Mn atoms occupy the octahedral sites located between layers forming 'bridges' along the c axis, which link neighboring Mn layers. The magnetic properties of the crystal have been investigated using ac and dc magnetization measurements in the temperature range 2-900 K at magnetic fields up to 90 kOe. The experimental data obtained suggest that in the temperature region under study several different magnetic phases can be distinguished. Down to similar to 250 K, the crystal is in the paramagnetic state. Below this temperature, short-range antiferromagnetic ordering apparently starts forming within Mn layers, although a transition to long-range magnetic order occurs at 70 K. The magnetization data obtained leads us to conclude that this state is canted antiferromagnetic with moments lying in the basal plane of the crystal. In addition, below 20 K the crystal undergoes one more magnetic transition that corresponds to spin reorientation.

Аннотация: We investigate the high-frequency susceptibility (Green function) of an initially sinusoidal 1D superlattice with 2D phase inhomogeneities that model the deformations of the interfaces between the superlattice layers. For waves propagating along the superlattice axis ( the geometry of a photon or magnon crystal), we have found a peculiar behavior of the imaginary part of the Green function that consists in a significant difference between the peaks corresponding to the edges of the band gap in the wave spectrum. The peak corresponding to the lower-frequency band edge remains essentially unchanged as the root-mean-square fluctuation of the 2D inhomogeneities. 2 increases, while the peak corresponding to the higher-frequency band edge broaden and decreases sharply in height until its complete disappearance with increasing gamma(2). This behavior of the peaks corresponds to a band gap closure mechanism that differs from the traditional one characteristic of 1D and 3D inhomogeneities. These effects can be explained by a peculiarity of the energy conservation laws for the incident and scattered waves for 2D inhomogeneities in a 1D superlattice.

Аннотация: The magnetization of Fe/Si multilayers, grown by thermal evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum system, was investigated at high temperatures. Magnetization and its temperature dependence up to a high temperature of 800 K depend on individual Fe layer thickness d(Fe). This dependence is the result of the formation of an Fe-Si interface layer (nonmagnetic phase) during the synthetic procedure. The fraction of this Fe-Si nonmagnetic phase is estimated versus dFe. At temperatures higher than 400 K an irreversible decrease in the magnetization occurs. A quantitative analysis of this irreversible behavior is proposed in terms of an exponential diffusion-like kinetic equation for the reaction that produces the Fe-Si nonmagnetic phase. The coefficients of the rate equation are the activation energy E(a) and the prefactor D(0), which have been determined for different d(Fe). (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.
