Аннотация:
The atomic and electronic structure of some endo-, exo-, and endo-exohedral complexes of the fullerene C-60 with various guest atoms and molecules (He-n, H-2, and Li-2) are investigated using semiempirical and nonempirical quantum-chemical methods. The atomic core dynamics is studied by the method of molecular dynamics. It is shown that guest atoms and molecules in fullerene polyhedra acquire an orbital angular momentum due to the correlated motion of nuclei above the low-energy barriers of the potential surface within the carbon polyhedron even at low temperatures (from 4 to 78 K). The emergence of orbital angular momenta of nuclei of guest atoms and molecules is attributed to a change in the contribution of the orbital angular momentum of electrons to the potential surface of the complexes. ions
in a polyhedron leads to blurring of the top of the valence band and to the emergence of a charge polarization wave in the carbon polyhedron. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация:
The results of nonempirical calculation of energies of three polytypes (cubic, two-layer hexagonal, and six-layer hexagonal) are given for RbMnX3 (X=F, Cl, Br) crystals. The calculation is performed using an ionic crystal model with regard for the deformability and the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of
ions
. The behavior of these crystals under the action of hydrostatic pressure is studied. It is demonstrated that, at normal pressure, the RbMnCl3 and RbMnBr3 crystals have a six-layer hexagonal structure. At pressures above 11 kbar, RbMnCl3 passes to a phase with a cubic structure; RbMnBr3 at pressures above 90 kbar passes to a phase with a two-layer hexagonal structure. The RbMnF3 crystal under normal conditions has a cubic structure and experiences no phase transformations under the effect of pressure. The obtained results are in satisfactory agreement with the known experimental data. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

The optical absorption spectra of Rb2MnxCd1-xCl4 crystals are experimentally studied in the vicinity of a magnon sideband of the exciton band at a manganese content x ranging from 1.0 to 0.4. Additional absorption bands are observed with an increase in the magnetic structural disorder upon replacement of manganese
ions
by cadmium
ions
. An analysis of the evolution of the additional absorption bands in a magnetic field during the spin-flop phase transition and the change in the intensity with variations in the manganese content x demonstrates that these bands are associated with the excitation of the exchange-coupled pairs of manganese
ions
located in different environments in a plane square lattice. The phase boundary between the antiferromagnetic and spin-flop phases is constructed using the results of optical measurements. Аннотация:
Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption have been studied in a glass system 20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2 + GeO2) with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+
ions
. Computer simulations of the EPR spectra show that the short-range ordering in the environment of the Gd3+
ions
is well preserved. The relative distribution widths of the ligand coordinates are less than 2%. In the more heavily doped glasses the EPR spectra are superpositions of signals arising from isolated
ions
and ferromagnetic clusters. The increase of Gd3+ concentration is shown to change substantially the strong optical absorption edge while only small changes of f-f absorption band characteristics are observed. This difference is associated with the different effect of the Gd ion clustering on the mechanisms of the strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and the f-f absorption.

drifting across the electrons. Within an electrostatic approximation, the influence of the kappa parameter on the maximum growth rate of the MTSI is evaluated for the special case of parallel drift velocity and wave propagation.

Аннотация:
The method to investigate "single-ion" exchange anisotropy (as predicted by the pair model) is treated by exploration of several isostructural diamagnetic crystals containing magnetic impurities. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra were observed for ferric borate isostructural crystals MBO(3): Fe(3+) (M = Ga, In, Lu, Sc). The experimental dependences of the spin-Hamiltonian axial parameters of the second-order D(S) and fourth-order (a-F)(cS) versus total pair spin S are presented. The contributions arising from the distortion of the parent crystal lattice MBO3 under magnetic dilution are estimated. The microscopic derived expressions for the "single-ion" contribution to the anisotropy are also presented. The present experimental data enable estimation of the "single- ion" exchange contribution for FeBO(3), MnCO(3), and alpha-Fe(2)O(3) crystals at T= 0 K. The quantitative estimations for EPR are in satisfactory agreement among themselves and with the experimental data.

Positive Weiss constants have been found in the more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+
ions
. Two magnetic phase transitions at 55 and 12 K were detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters containing Gd
ions
. The overall shape of the EPR spectra shows the presence of clustering at the higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance signal is altered in shape, indicating an onset of magnetic anisotropy field. This signal is convincingly fitted to superparamagnetic resonance arising from ferromagnetic nanoparticles. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a significant shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge, ascribed to a charge transfer transition between Gd
ions
. A nonmonotonous change of refractive index with the increase of the Gd content indicates changes in the glass matrix and in Gd cluster structure.
