Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: Laser cooling and crystallization of electron-ion plasma is studied using the Brownian dynamics simulation technique and taking into consideration the interaction of ions with the electron subsystem. It has been shown that the nonlinear dependence of laser friction force on the velocity of ions has to be taken into account in order to simulate in an adequate manner the cooling dynamics and obtain a correct estimate for minimum temperatures. It has been found that times required for formation of an ordered ionic structure can be much longer than the typical plasma cooling time.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum has been calculated for a 'cholesteric liquid crystal-phase plate-metal' structure. It is shown that the system can have an isolated waveguide surface mode with characteristics efficiently controllable by external fields acting on the cholesteric. This mode is similar to optical Tamm state. We observed anisotropy of transmission of the structure under consideration in the propagation of light of a certain polarization in forward and backward directions. This property is inherent in optically chiral media, such as the cholesteric liquid crystal.

Аннотация: Cholesteric droplets under homeotropic boundary conditions demonstrate a rich variety of possible orientational structures. We have implemented electrically controlled switching of such droplets between two classes of stable states: i) structures with cylindrical cholesteric layers and ii) layer-like structures with one or more λ+1/2-disclinations. Structure relaxation after switching off the voltage proceeded via the fast (less than 1 s), the slow (more than 1 s), and the stabilization stages (~10 hours). We investigated intermediate long-lived metastable states occurring in the relaxation process and explained the formation of various structures in cholesteric droplets. The fast and the slow stages of relaxation were found to be sensitive to the voltage reduction regime. We have determined the combinations of droplet size and voltage reduction regimes leading to the two types of structures after relaxation.

Заглавие : Electrically tunable thermoresponsive optic switch for smart window application based on dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal

Аннотация: We demonstrate a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) smart window that functions as a reversible thermo-optic switch between a transparent state at a low temperature and a low-transmission state at a higher temperature. This smart window is based on the addition of a thermoresponsive handedness-reversible chiral dopant in a mixture of a typical chiral dopant, a dichroic dye and nematic liquid crystal, yielding a thermosensitized CLC. In such a homeotropically anchored dye-doped CLC, the thickness-to-pitch ratio increases as the temperature rises, causing the device to switch from the homeotropic texture to the fingerprint texture. The absorption characteristic of the dichroic dye enables the homeotropic and fingerprint configurations in the dye-doped CLC to create two distinct transmission levels—the transparent and opaque optically stable states, respectively. Such a switching mechanism entails no additional electric power and, thus, is energy-saving. Moreover, the switching temperature at which the texture transition takes place can be actively increased by increasing voltage for the smart window. This allows the CLC device to be perfectly adaptable to the need of a user and, in turn, applicable to a wider variety of environments.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): polymer-stabilized blue phase--liquid crystal--fluorine-containing--compound--operating voltage--ionic effect
Аннотация: The effects of a fluorine-containing compound (4,4′-difluorobenzophenone; DF) on the electro-optical and dielectric properties of polymer-stabilized blue phase (PSBP) liquid crystals were investigated. When a PSBP cell was driven by an in-plane electric field, the addition of DF up to 2.7 wt% effectively reduced the operation voltage by ~ 30%. Further inspection by dielectric spectroscopy indicated that the ionic concentration in PSBP decreased with increasing loading of DF. This finding can be ascribed to the complexation of impurity ions near the ketone group and carbon–fluorine bonds of the DF compound that restrained the ion transport after photopolymerization. As a result, the DF compound can be regarded as a superior ion-suppressor, enabling the reduction in the ionic effect and, in turn, the promotion of the electro-optical response of a PSBP.

Аннотация: A theoretical and experimental study of the gas phase and liquid acetic acid based on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy is presented. We combine and compare different levels of theory for an isolated molecule for a comprehensive analysis, including electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. The excitation energy scan over the oxygen K-edge absorption reveals nuclear dynamic effects in the core-excited and final electronic states. The theoretical simulations for the monomer and two different forms of the dimer are compared against high-resolution experimental data for pure liquid acetic acid. We show that the theoretical model based on a dimer describes the hydrogen bond formation in the liquid phase well and that this bond formation sufficiently alters the RIXS spectra, allowing us to trace these effects directly from the experiment. Multimode vibrational dynamics is accounted for in our simulations by using a hybrid time-dependent stationary approach for the quantum nuclear wave packet simulations, showing the important role it plays in RIXS.

Аннотация: Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal droplets. We have considered the droplets of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.

Аннотация: We investigate the optical transmission of a monochromatic laser beam passing through an individual domain of a nematic liquid crystal formed by the polycarbonate surface. The domain has the radial orientation structure with a disclination line on the polymer surface, which gradually transforms to "pseudoplanar" alignment at the coherence distance ? from the surface. The dependence of the optical transmittance on an electric field applied to the domain are different at various light polarization directions relative to the disclination lines and, in the absence of an analyzer, are accompanied by interference oscillations. To explain the results obtained, a domain is considered to be a gradient lens with the refractive index variable in the plane perpendicular to the laser beam and the resulting deflecting effect that was collected at the beam path through the liquid crystal layer. © 2016 Optical Society of America.
