Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of second harmonic generation in negative-index metamaterials, where the Poynting vector and the wavevector have opposite directions are investigated. The "backward" phase-matching condition results in significant changes in the Manley-Rowe relations and in spatial distributions of the field intensities of the coupled waves.

Аннотация: The feasibilities and specific features of coherent nonlinear-optical energy transfer from control fields to a negativephase signal are studied, and they are found to stem from the backwardness of electromagnetic waves inherent to negative-index metamaterials. Plasmonic metamaterials that possess negative group velocity for light waves promise a revolutionary breakthrough in nanophotonics. However, strong absorption inherent to such metaldielectric nanocomposites imposes severe limitations on the majority of such applications. Herein we show the feasibility and discuss different nonlinear-optical techniques of compensating such losses, producing transparency, amplification and even generation of negative-phase light waves in originally strongly absorbing microscopic samples of plasmonic metal-dielectric nanostructured composites. © 2009 SPIE.

Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of quantum control over the slab transparency in such a scheme is confirmed through numerical experiments. We thus show opportunities and conditions for the compensation of the strong absorption inherent to plasmonic negative-index metamaterials, and we further show achievable transparency through coherent energy transfer from the control optical field to the negative-index signal.

Аннотация: The extraordinary properties of resonant four-wave mixing of backward and ordinary electromagnetic waves in doped negative-index materials are investigated. The feasibility of independent engineering of the negative refractive index and the nonlinear optical response as well as quantum control of the nonlinear propagation process in such composites is shown due to the coherent energy transfer from a control field to a signal field. Laser-induced transparency, quantum switching, frequency-tunable narrow-band filtering, amplification, and realizing a miniature mirrorless optical parametric generator of the entangled backward and ordinary waves are among the possible applications of the investigated processes.

Аннотация: We investigate extraordinary features of optical parametric amplification of Stokes electromagnetic waves that originate from the three-wave mixing of a backward phonon wave with negative group velocity and two ordinary electromagnetic waves. Such properties were earlier shown to exist only in plasmonic negative-index metamaterials that are very challenging to fabricate. Nonlinear optical photonic devices with properties similar to those predicted for negative-index metamaterials are proposed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

They concern with greatly enhanced coherent NLO energy exchange between ordinary and backward waves (BWs) through the frequency-conversion processes. Two different classes of materials which support BWs are considered: crystals that support optical phonons with negative group velocity and MMs with specially engineered spatial dispersion. The possibility to replace plasmonic NLO MMs enabling magnetic response at optical frequencies, which are very challenging to engineer, by the ordinary readily available crystals, are discussed. The possibility to mimic extraordinary NLO frequency-conversion propagation processes attributed to negative-index MMs (NIMs) is shown in some of such crystals, if optical phonons with negative group velocity and a proper phase-matching geometry are implemented. Here, optical phonons are used as one of the coupled counterparts instead of backward electromagnetic waves (BEMWs). The appearance of BEMWs in metaslabs made of carbon nanotubes, the possibilities and extraordinary properties of BW second harmonic generation in such MMs is another option of nonmagnetic NIMs, which is described too. Among the applications of the proposed photonic materials is the possibility of creation of a family of unique BW photonic devices such as frequency doubling metamirror and Raman amplifiers with greatly improved efficiency.

Аннотация: The structures of double molybdates with general compositions ALn(MoO4)2 (A – alkaline metals, Cu or Tl) have been considered and compared. It has been shown that the ionic radii ratio RLn/RA is a key factor governing crystal symmetry. Different structure fields in ALn(MoO4)2 (A = Li+, Na+, K+, Cu+, Rb+, Ag+, Cs+, Tl+) molybdates have been defined as a function of element composition.

Аннотация: A possibility to greatly enhance frequency-conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward waves. Such processes are commonly attributed to negative-index plasmonic metamaterials. This work demonstrates the possibility to replace such metamaterials that are very challenging to engineer by readily available crystals which support elastic waves with contradirected phase and group velocities. The main goal of this work is to investigate specific properties of indicated nonlinear optical process in short pulse regime and to show that it enables elimination of fundamental detrimental effect of fast damping of optical phonons on the process concerned. Among the applications is the possibility of creation of a family of unique photonic devices such as unidirectional Raman amplifiers and femtosecond pulse shapers with greatly improved operational properties.
