Аннотация: The properties, features of thermal behavior and crystallization of copolymers containing various types of valerate monomers were studied depending on the set and ratio of monomers. We synthesized and studied the properties of three-component copolymers containing unusual monomers 4-hydroxyvalerate (4HV) and 3-hydroxy-4-methylvalerate (3H4MV), in addition to the usual 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) monomers. The results showed that P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) and P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3H4MV) terpolymers tended to increase thermal stability, especially for methylated samples, including an increase in the gap between melting point (Tmelt) and thermal degradation temperature (Tdegr), an increase in the melting point and glass transition temperature, as well as a lower degree of crystallinity (40–46%) compared with P(3HB-co-3HV) (58–66%). The copolymer crystallization kinetics depended on the set and ratio of monomers. For terpolymers during exothermic crystallization, higher rates of spherulite formation (Gmax) were registered, reaching, depending on the ratio of monomers, 1.6–2.0 µm/min, which was several times higher than the Gmax index (0.52 µm/min) for the P(3HB-co-3HV) copolymer. The revealed differences in the thermal properties and crystallization kinetics of terpolymers indicate that they are promising polymers for processing into high quality products from melts.

Аннотация: This work is devoted to the study of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles doubly coated with carbon. First, Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were synthesized by thermal decomposition. Then these synthesized nanoparticles, 20–30 nm in size were processed in a solution of glucose at 200 °C during 12 h, which led to an unexpected phenomenon – the nanoparticles self-assembled into large conglomerates of a regular shape of about 300 nm in size. The morphology and features of the magnetic properties of the obtained hybrid nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, differential thermo-gravimetric analysis, vibrating sample magnetometer, magnetic circular dichroism and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was shown that the magnetic core of Fe3O4@C nanoparticles was nano-crystalline, corresponding to the Fe3O4 phase. The Fe3O4@C@C nanoparticles presumably contain Fe3O4 phase (80%) with admixture of maghemite (20%), the thickness of the carbon shell in the first case was of about 2–4 nm. The formation of very large nanoparticle conglomerates with a linear size up to 300 nm and of the same regular shape is a remarkable peculiarity of the Fe3O4@C@C nanoparticles. Adsorption of organic dyes from water by the studied nanoparticles was also studied. The best candidates for the removal of dyes were Fe3O4@C@C nanoparticles. The kinetic data showed that the adsorption processes were associated with the pseudo-second order mechanism for cationic dye methylene blue (MB) and anionic dye Congo red (CR). The equilibrium data were more consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and were perfectly described by the Langmuir–Freundlich model.

Аннотация: We propose the construction of highly directional emission microlasers using two-dimensional high-index semiconductor waveguides as open resonators. The prototype waveguide is formed by two collinear leads connected to a cavity of certain shape. The proposed lasing mechanism requires that the shape of the cavity yield mixed chaotic ray dynamics so as to have the approplate (phase space) resonance islands. These islands allow, via Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the appearance of quasibound states (QBSs) which, in turn, propitiate the lasing mechanism. The energy values of the QBSs are found through the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We use classical ray dynamics to predict the direction and intensity of the lasing produced by such open resonators for typical values of the index of refraction.

Аннотация: Scheelite related alkali-metal rare-earth double molybdate compounds with a general formula of ALn(MoO4)2 can find wide application as red phosphors. The crystal chemistry and luminescence properties of red-emitting CsGd1−xEux(MoO4)2 solid-solution phosphors have been evaluated in the present paper. A detailed analysis of the structural properties indicates the formation of isostructural scheelite-type CsGd1−xEux(MoO4)2 solid-solutions over the composition range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The photoluminescence emission (PL) and excitation (PLE) spectra, and the decay curves were measured for this series of compounds. The critical doping concentration of Eu3+ is determined to be x = 0.6 in order to realize the maximum emission intensity. The emission spectra of the as-obtained CsGd(1−x)Eux(MoO4)2 phosphors show narrow high intensity red lines at 592 and 615 nm upon excitation at 394 or 465 nm, revealing great potential for applications in white light-emitting diode devices.

Nickel nanoparticles -- Sodium polyacrylate -- Polyol -- Reduction -- Magnetic properties
Аннотация: Nickel nanoparticles were synthesized by the reduction of nickel chloride with hydrazine hydrate in a polyol medium in the presence of sodium polyacrylates (Na-PA) having molecular weights (Mw) of 1200, 5100 and 8000. The size and morphology of the resulting nickel nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Polymers having lower Mw values were found to be more efficient in reducing the nickel particle size. A decrease in the polymer concentrations yielded the smaller particles. Magnetic measurements showed that the as-prepared powders are ferromagnetic and their saturation magnetization and coercivity are size-dependent. Compared with bulk nickel, the nanoparticles exhibit an enhanced coercivity which is due to their small size and a decreased saturation magnetization resulted from the surface oxidation of the powder. The synthesis procedure offers a simple approach to preparing nickel nanopowders on a large scale which could be used as magnetic recording materials, including high-density memory storage devices.

Copper selenide -- Magnetic nanoparticles -- Visible magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: Cu1-xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles with x = 0, 0.2, and 0.4 were synthesized via thermal decomposition of metal nitrate or chloride salts and selenium powder using different precursor compositions and processing details. Single crystalline nano-belts or nano-rods coexist in the synthesized powder samples with hexagon-shaped plates in dependence on the precursor composition. The belts gathered into conglomerates forming "hierarchical" particles. Visible magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of Cu1-xFexCr2Se4 nanoparticles embedded into a transparent matrix was investigated for the first time. The similarity of the MCD spectra of all samples showed the similarity of the nanoparticles electronic structure independent of their morphology. Basing on the MCD spectral maxima characteristics, electron transitions from the ground to the excited states were identified with the help of the conventional band theory and the multi-electron approach. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: Hematite, α-Fe2O3, one of the most widely studied magnetic compounds known to mankind since ancient times, has amazing properties and continues to puzzle researchers to this day. In this work, we found exceptionally strong changes in the morphology and magnetic properties of hematite nanoparticles upon doping with rather low concentrations of chromium. Nanoparticles α-Fe2−xCrxO3 with x varied from zero to 0.15 were prepared by solvothermal method using FeCl3·6H2O, CrCl3·6H2O, and 1,2-diaminopropane, (CH2)3(NH2)2, as precursors and temperature 180 °C for 6 h. The X-ray diffraction data showed the presence of only one crystal phase α-Fe2O3 for all x meanings with growing average crystalline size as the x increases. For the parent α-Fe2O3 powdered samples, the transmission electron microscopy revealed very long narrow nanorods with rounded ends that transform into spindles of increasing volume and cross section diameter as the Cr concentration increases. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) study of the nanoparticles behavior in dependences on temperature and magnetic field revealed many unusual peculiarities. Among them there are strong increase of NPs magnetization with x increase (usually opposite picture is observed), the Morin transition temperature TM dependence on magnetic field, VSM sees the Morin transition in samples with small x only while MCD – in all samples, magnetization field dependences also are different when measured with VSM and MCD, and so on. Qualitative considerations were proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Ferrihydrite nanoparticles -- Morphology -- Laurdan -- TMA-DPH -- Membrane -- Fluidity
Аннотация: In recent years was observed an increased interest towards the use of metal nanoparticles for various biomedical applications, such as therapeutics, delivery systems or imaging. As biological membranes are the first structures with which the nanoparticles interact, it is necessary to understand better the mechanisms governing these interactions. In the present paper we aim to characterize the effect of three different ferrihydrite nanoparticles (simple or doped with cooper or cobalt) on the fluidity of model lipid membranes. First we evaluated the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles: size and composition. Secondly, their effect on lipid membranes was also evaluated using Laurdan, TMA-DPH and DPH fluorescence. Our results can help better understand the mechanisms involved in nanoparticles and membrane interactions.

DENSE BRANCHING MORPHOLOGY
   SINGLE-CRYSTAL GROWTH

   AL-GE

   PHASE-SEPARATION

Аннотация: Fractal clusters in amorphous thin films are examples of growth models. The main models are the Witten-Sander model and its modifications. It is believed that fractal patterns are formed in the course of the crystallization of an amorphous phase. It is shown that self-propagating high-temperature synthesis can be initiated in an Al/Ge film system and fractal patterns are formed in the reaction products. It is conjectured that the transition of an amorphous phase to a crystalline phase does not play a substantial role in the appearance of such patterns, while the formation of fractal clusters is determined by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. polyurethane -- surface morphology -- nanoparticles -- nanowires -- core-shell -- molecular mobility -- molecular heterogeneity -- interfacial layers -- boundary layer -- transition layer
Аннотация: This article presents the surface morphology effect of silicon carbide (SiC) particles on the polyurethane binder’s structure formation in a dispersed-filled composite. The difference in the morphology and surface relief of filler particles was ensured by the implementation of plasma chemical modification. As a result of this modification, the filler consisted of core-shell particles characterized by a SiC core and a carbon shell (SiC@C), as well as a carbon shell decorated with silicon nanoparticles (SiC@C/SiNP) or nanos (SiC@C/SiNW). The study of the relaxation properties of polyurethane composites has shown that the strongest limiting effect on the molecular mobility of boundary layer’s chain segments is exerted by a highly developed surface with a complex relief of SiC@C/SiNP and SiC@C/SiNW particles. An empirical method was proposed to find the polymer fractions spent on the formation of the boundary, transition and bulk layers of the polymer matrix in the composite. It was shown that the morphology of the filler particles’ surface does not affect the dependence of the boundary layer thickness on the filler’s volume fraction. However, with an increase in the degree of surface development, the boundary layer thickness decreases.

Аннотация: Features in the formation of chemically deposited polycrystalline Co-P films with thicknesses of a few nanometers are established by analyzing film surface morphology and variation in the film magnetization. It is shown that in the thickness range below 30 nm the polar Kerr effect value OK changes nonmonotonically and depends on a wavelength of the incident light. For the films thicker than 30 nm, this value depends weakly on both the thickness and the wavelength. These features in the OK behavior are attributed to the Faraday effect, which is revealed at small thicknesses upon light reflection from the lower surface of a magnetic layer. It is found that the Faraday effect in the Co-P films exceeds that in the Co films by a factor of more than two. This effect is assumed to be caused by the presence of a Pd underlayer in the samples under study. (C) 2011 Elsevier BY. All rights reserved.

It is found that the specific value of the magnetooptical Faraday effect in Co-P films exceeds that in Co films by a factor of more than two. This is attributed to the magnetic polarization of a Pd underlayer. It is shown the Kerr effect in Co films is negligibly influenced by the embedding of phosphorus. © 2012 Allerton Press, Inc.
