Аннотация:
In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on
nematic
liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация:
Optical textures and appropriate orientational structures have been studied within droplets of chiral
nematic
dispersed in polymer assigning the homeotropic anchoring. The helix axis of the chiral structure inside droplets forms the bipolar configuration. The optical droplet textures were analysed in the unpolarised light, analyser switching-off scheme and in crossed polarisers. The twisted loop defect reveals itself convincingly in all schemes. Its appearance at the optical patterns of the chiral
nematic
droplets has been examined depending on their size and the aspect direction. The existence of the defect has been verified by the structural and optical calculations. The effect of an electric field on both the defect line shape and the orientational structure of chiral
nematic
has been studied.

Аннотация:
The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the
nematic
liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the
nematic
director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the
nematic
director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.

Аннотация:
The director configuration in a bipolar drop of a
nematic
with rigidly fixed poles is calculated as a function of the electric field directed perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the drop. It is shown that the reorientation of the drop is a dual process: a threshold process in the region where the initial director orientation is orthogonal to the electric field, and a nonthreshold process elsewhere in the drop. A relation for determining the critical field is obtained. Experimental investigations of the characteristics of scattered light for a film of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals confirm the computational results. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. Light polarization control by the chiral-
nematic
cell with hybrid tangential-conical boundary conditions has been studied by means of photo- and electrically induced transformations of the orientational structure. The polarization azimuth changes due to the power ratio of ultraviolet and blue radiations, at which the director twist angle in the chiral
nematic
varies smoothly. The light polarization ellipticity is controlled by an electric field applied perpendicular to the liquid crystal cell changing the effective anisotropy of the refractive index. The optical material under study is promising to develop the devices for the light polarization converter over the entire visible range, as well as for photo-controlled rotators of linear polarization of white light.

Аннотация:
The orientational order parameter S of molecules in high-temperature discotic
nematic
liquid-crystal phases of triphenylene derivatives is investigated as a function of the length of side flexible molecular chains at different temperatures. It is established that the orientational order parameters S in the range of the transition from the
nematic
phase to the isotropic liquid phase (the N-D-I transition) are smaller than those predicted from the molecular-statistical theory and computer simulation. It is shown that the N-D-I transition is close to both the isolated Landau point and the tricritical point (regardless of the chemical structure of the molecules and the anisotropy of dispersion intermolecular interactions). Consistent explanations are offered for a number of experimental findings, such as the anomalously small changes in the enthalpy and entropy upon the N-D-I transition (as compared to those revealed upon the N-I transition in calamitic
nematic
liquid crystals), the anomalously strong response of the isotropic phase of discotic
nematic
liquid crystals to external fields (thermodynamically conjugate to the order parameter S) and the long relaxation times of this response, and the formation of cybotactic discotic molecular clusters in the isotropic phase in the vicinity of the N-D-I transition. A technique to determine anchoring energy of planar MBBA layer with cleavage surfaces of triglycine sulphate is presented. The method is based on guest-host phenomenon in impure
nematic
. The anchoring energy W = (1.0 +/- 0.3).10(-4) erg/cm2 is calculated within Rapini-Papoular approximation.

Аннотация:
The
nematic
droplets with director configurations intermediate between the bipolar and radial structures have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The liquid crystal 4(')-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with a variable addition of the lecithin dispersed in polyvinylbutyral has been used. The characteristic textures of the droplets formed at various lecithin contents have been examined using polarizing microscope both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer. The computer simulation has been performed for proper ordering of the director in spherical
nematic
droplets by minimizing the free energy in the one-constant approximation. The inhomogeneous boundary conditions with strong anchoring of the molecules at the interface have been used. The distribution of the anchoring angle at the droplet surface has been estimated based on analysis of observed patterns. The simulated textures of the droplets under crossed polarizers are shown to compare well with the experimental ones.
