gold nanoparticles -- luminous marine bacteria -- bioassay -- hormesis -- tritium -- reactive oxygen species
Аннотация: Our current study aimed to adapt a bioluminescent bacteria-based bioassay to monitor the bioeffects of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Luminous marine bacteria Photobacterium phosphoreum and AuNPs modified with polyvinylpyrrolidone were employed; low-concentration (≤10−3 g/L) bioeffects of AuNPs were studied. Bioluminescence intensity was used as an indicator of physiological activity in bacteria. Two additional methods were used: reactive oxygen species (ROS) content was estimated with a chemiluminescent luminol method, and bacterial size was monitored using electron microscopy. The bacterial bioluminescent response to AuNPs corresponded to the “hormesis” model and involved time-dependent bioluminescence activation, as well as a pronounced increase in the number of enlarged bacteria. We found negative correlations between the time courses of bioluminescence and the ROS content in bacterial suspensions, demonstrating the relationship between bioluminescence activation and bacterial ROS consumption. The combined effects of AuNPs and a beta-emitting radionuclide, tritium, revealed suppression of bacterial bioluminescent activity (as compared to their individual effects) and a reduced percentage of enlarged bacteria. Therefore, we demonstrated that our bacteria-based bioluminescence assay is an appropriate tool to study the bioeffects of AuNPs; the bioeffects can be further classified within a unified framework for rapid bioassessment.

bioactive compound -- fullerenol -- antioxidant activity -- toxicity -- reactive oxygen species -- bioluminescence bioassay
Аннотация: Fullerenols are nanosized water-soluble polyhydroxylated derivatives of fullerenes, a specific allotropic form of carbon, bioactive compounds, and perspective basis for drug development. Our paper analyzes the antioxidant activity and toxicity of a series of fullerenols with different number of oxygen substituents. Two groups of fullerenols were under investigation: (1) C60Oy(OH)(x), C60,70Oy(OH)(x), where x+y = 24-28 and (2) C60,70Oy(OH)(x), Fe0,5C60Oy(OH)(x), Gd@C82Oy(OH)(x), where x+y = 40-42. Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays (luminous marine bacteria and their enzymatic reactions, respectively) were applied to monitor toxicity in the model fullerenol solutions and bioluminescence was applied as a signaling physiological parameter. The inhibiting concentrations of the fullerenols were determined, revealing the fullerenols' toxic effects. Antioxidant fullerenol' ability was studied in solutions of model oxidizer, 1,4-benzoquinone, and detoxification coefficients of general and oxidative types (D-GT and D-OxT) were calculated. All fullerenols produced toxic effect at high concentrations (>0.01 g L-1), while their antioxidant activity was demonstrated at low and ultralow concentrations (<0.001 g L-1). Quantitative toxic and antioxidant characteristics of the fullerenols (effective concentrations, concentration ranges, D-GT, and D-OxT) were found to depend on the number of oxygen substituents. Lower toxicity and higher antioxidant activity were determined in solutions of fullerenols with fewer oxygen substituents (x+y ⋍ 24-28). The differences in fullerenol properties were attributed to their catalytic activity due to reversible electron acceptance, radical trapping, and balance of reactive oxygen species in aqueous solutions. The results provide pharmaceutical sciences with a basis for selection of carbon nanoparticles with appropriate toxic and antioxidant characteristics. Based on the results, we recommend, to reduce the toxicity of prospective endohedral gadolinium-fullerenol preparations Gd@C82Oy(OH)(x), decreasing the number of oxygen groups to x+y ⋍ 24-28. The potential of bioluminescence methods to compare toxic and antioxidant characteristics of carbon nanostructures were demonstrated.

Antioxidant activity -- Bioactive compounds -- Fullerenol -- Humic substances -- Toxicity -- Reactive oxygen species
Аннотация: Purpose: The aim of the work is to compare the biological activity of carbonic nano-structures of natural and artificial origination, namely, humic substances (HS) and fullerenols. Materials and methods: The representative of the fullerenol group, С60Оy(OH)x where у + x = 20–22, was chosen. Enzyme-based luminescent bioassay was applied to evaluate toxicity and antioxidant properties of HS and fullerenol (F); chemiluminescent luminol method was used to study a content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the solutions. Toxicity of the bioactive compounds was evaluated using effective concentrations ЕС50; detoxification coefficients DOxT were applied to study and compare antioxidant activity of the compounds. Antioxidant activity and ranges of active concentrations of the bioactive compounds were determined in model solutions of organic and inorganic oxidizers—1,4-benzoquinone and potassium ferricianide. Results and discussion: Values of ЕС50 revealed higher toxicity of HS than F (0.005 and 0.108 g L−1, respectively); detoxifying concentrations of F were found to be lower. Antioxidant ability of HS was demonstrated to be time-dependent; the 50-min preliminary incubation in oxidizer solutions was suggested as optimal for the detoxification procedure. On the contrary, F’ antioxidant effect demonstrated independency on time. Antioxidant effect of HS did not depend on amphiphilic characteristics of the media (values of DOxT were 1.3 in the solutions of organic and inorganic oxidizers), while this of F was found to depend: it was maximal (DOxT = 2.0) in solutions of organic oxidizer, 1,4-benzoquinone. Conclusions: Both HS and F demonstrated toxicity and low-concentration antioxidant ability; however, quantitative characteristics of their effects were different. The differences were explained with HS polyfunctionality, higher ability to decrease ROS content, non-rigidity, and diffusion restrictions in their solutions. Antioxidant effect of the bioactive compounds was presumably attributed to catalytic redox activity of their π-fragments. The paper demonstrates a high potential of luminescent enzymatic bioassay to study biological activity of nano-structures of natural and artificial origination.

solid-phase synthesis -- scanning electron microscopy -- Mössbauer spectroscopy -- cation vacancies
Аннотация: Structured composite materials CaFe2O4-α-Fe2O3 (α-Fe2O3 content is 2–82 wt.%) are obtained with the method of solid-phase synthesis at 1000 °C. The phase composition of the samples is studied using powder X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the content of CaFe2O4 and α-Fe2O3 phases changes linearly, depending on the composition of the starting material. The scanning electron microscopy data indicate the formation of a two-phase system α-Fe2O3-CaFe2O4. The Mössbauer spectroscopy data at room temperature testify the formation of cationic iron vacancies in the CaFe2O4 crystal structure in the absence of α-Fe2O3 structural defects. Cationic vacancies can be formed during the synthesis in the atmosphere of air.

Аннотация: Adsorption complexes of palladium atoms on F-s, F-s(+), F-s(2+), and O2- centers of MgO(001) surface have been investigated with a gradient-corrected (Becke-Perdew) density functional method applied to embedded cluster models. This study presents the first application of a self-consistent hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical embedding approach where the defect-induced distortions are treated variationally and the environment is allowed to react on perturbations of a reference configuration describing the regular surface. The cluster models are embedded in an elastic polarizable environment which is described at the atomistic level using a shell model treatment of ionic polarizabilities. The frontier region that separates the quantum mechanical cluster and the classical environment is represented by pseudopotential centers without basis functions. Accounting in this way for the relaxation of the electronic structure of the adsorption complex results in energy corrections of 1.9 and 5.3 eV for electron affinities of the charged defects F-s(+) and F-s(2+), respectively, as compared to models with a bulk-terminated geometry. The relaxation increases the stability of the adsorption complex Pd/F-s by 0.4 eV and decreases the stability of the complex Pd/F-s(2+) by 1.0 eV, but it only weakly affects the binding energy of Pd/F-s(+). The calculations provide no indication that the metal species is oxidized, not even for the most electron deficient complex Pd/F-s(2+). The binding energy of the complex Pd/O2- is calculated at -1.4 eV, that of the complex Pd/F-s(2+) at -1.3 eV. The complexes Pd/F-s and Pd/F-s(+) exhibit notably higher binding energies, -2.5 and -4.0 eV, respectively; in these complexes, a covalent polar adsorption bond is formed, accompanied by donation of electronic density to the Pd 5s orbital. Аннотация: We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on CuB2O4 with a magnetic field applied in the tetragonal basal plane. The spin dynamics in this cuprate is determined by the interplay of two magnetic Cu2+ subsystems, the magnetic cage with predominant 3d Heisenberg exchange and quasi Id zig-zag chains. The comparison of the dispersion spectra along the chain direction in zero field and under applied field suggests a decoupling of the two magnetic sublattices under field. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: We report g tensors of surface color centers, so-called F-s(+) centers, of MgO calculated with two density-functional approaches using accurately embedded cluster models. In line with recent UHV measurements on single-crystalline MgO film, we determined only small g-tensor anisotropies and negative shifts Delta g equivalent to g-g(e) for all F-s(+) sites considered, namely, (001)-terrace, step, edge, and corner sites. The g values are very sensitive to the local structure of the defect: relaxation reverses the sign of Delta g. However, accounting for the spin-orbit interaction either self-consistently or perturbatively yields very similar results. In addition to the values of the tensor components, their direction with respect to the surface was determined. In contrast to edges, significant deviations from ideal C-2v symmetry were found for F-s(+) centers at steps. Recent data on single-crystalline thin films are reevaluated in the light of these results. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Environmental catalysis -- Nanostructure -- Gasification -- Oxidation -- Mossbauer spectroscopy
Аннотация: Nanocomposite Fe–Al oxide catalysts were prepared by the melting of iron and aluminum nitrates with the subsequent calcination in air at different temperatures. It was found that the catalysts calcined at 450 °C are more active in the oxidation of CO than the catalysts calcined at 700 °C. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that all the catalysts consist of hematite, α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, and Al2O3 in an amorphous state. Iron oxide is the active component, which provides the oxidation of CO, while alumina is a texture promoter. The increase in the calcination temperature leads to a minor increase in the average size of hematite nanoparticles and an insignificant decrease in the specific surface area. Kinetic measurements showed that the oxidation of CO over the Fe–Al catalysts calcined at 450 and 700 °C proceeds with the activation energy of 61–69 and 91 kJ/mol, respectively. This means that the low-temperature and high-temperature catalysts contain different active species. Temperature-programmed reduction with CO indicated that the decrease in the calcination temperature improves the reducibility of the Fe-Al nanocomposites. According to 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, the low-temperature catalysts contain hydrated iron oxides (acagenite and ferrihydrite) and a significant amount of highly defective hematite, which is absent in the high-temperature catalyst. These species can provide the enhanced activity of the low-temperature catalysts in the oxidation of CO.

Rare-earth-substituted cobalt oxides -- Stability -- Thermoelectric properties
Аннотация: The behavior of the resistivity and thermopower of the Gd0.2Sr0.8FeO3−δ ferrite samples with a perovskite structure and the sample stability in an inert gas atmosphere in the temperature range of 300–800 K have been examined. It has been established that, in the investigated temperature range, the thermoelectric properties in the heating‒cooling mode are stabilized at δ ≥ 0.21. It is shown that the temperature dependencies of the resistivity obtained at different δ values obey the activation law up to the temperatures corresponding to the intense oxygen removal from a sample. The semiconductor‒semiconductor electronic transitions accompanied by a decrease in the activation energy have been observed with increasing temperature. It is demonstrated that the maximum thermoelectric power factor of 0.1 µW/(cm·K2) corresponds to a temperature of T = 800 K.

Аннотация: Gadolinium (Gd)-containing fullerenols are perspective agents for magnetic resonance imaging and cancer research. They combine the unique paramagnetic properties of Gd with solubility in water, low toxicity and antiradical activity of fullerenols. We compared the bioeffects of two Gd-containing fullerenols with a different number of oxygen groups—20 and 42: Gd@C82O20H14 and Gd@C82O42H32. The bioluminescent bacteria-based assay was applied to monitor the toxicity of fullerenols, bioluminescence was applied as a signal physiological parameter, and bacterial enzyme-based assay was used to evaluate the fullerenol effects on enzymatic intracellular processes. Chemiluminescence luminol assay was applied to monitor the content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial and enzymatic media. It was shown that Gd@C82O42H32 and Gd@C82O20H14 inhibited bacterial bioluminescence at >10?1 and >10?2 gL?1, respectively, revealing a lower toxicity of Gd@C82O42H32. Low-concentration (10?3–10?1 gL?1) bacterial bioluminescence activation by Gd@C82O42H32 was observed, while this activation was not found under exposure to Gd@C82O20H14. Additional carboxyl groups in the structure of Gd@C82O42H32 were determined by infrared spectroscopy and confirmed by quantum chemical calculations. The groups were supposed to endow Gd@C82O42H32 with higher penetration ability through the cellular membrane, activation ability, lower toxicity, balancing of the ROS content in the bacterial suspensions, and lower aggregation in aqueous media.

Аннотация: The Gd-containing metallofullerene derivatives are perspective magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. We studied the bioeffects of a water-soluble fullerene derivative, gadolinium-endohedral fullerenol, with 40–42 oxygen groups (Gd@Fln). Bioluminescent cellular and enzymatic assays were applied to monitor toxicity and antioxidant activity of Gd@Fln in model solutions; bioluminescence was applied as a signaling physiological parameter. The Gd@Fln inhibited bioluminescence at high concentrations (>2·10−1 gL−1), revealing lower toxicity as compared to the previously studied fullerenols. Efficient activation of bioluminescence (up to almost 100%) and consumption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial suspension were observed under low-concentration exposure to Gd@Fln (10−3–2·10−1 gL−1). Antioxidant capability of Gd@Fln was studied under conditions of model oxidative stress (i.e., solutions of model organic and inorganic oxidizers); antioxidant coefficients of Gd@Fln were determined at different concentrations and times of exposure. Contents of ROS were evaluated and correlations with toxicity/antioxidant coefficients were determined. The bioeffects of Gd@Fln were explained by hydrophobic interactions, electron affinity, and disturbing of ROS balance in the bioluminescence systems. The results contribute to understanding the molecular mechanism of “hormetic” cellular responses. Advantages of the bioluminescence assays to compare bioeffects of fullerenols based on their structural characteristics were demonstrated.

Аннотация: Novel self-activated yellow-emitting BaLuAlxZn4-xO7-(1-x)/2 photoluminescent materials were investigated by a combined experimental and theoretical analysis. The effects of Al/Zn composition modulation, calcination atmosphere and temperature on the crystal structure and photoluminescence properties have been studied via engineering oxygen vacancies. Accordingly, BaLuAl0.91Zn3.09O7 prepared in an air atmosphere was found to be the stable crystalline phase with optimal oxygen content and gave a broad yellow emission band with a maximum at 528 nm. The self-activated luminescence mechanism is ascribed to the O-vacancies based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. A theoretical model originating from the designed oxygen vacancies has been proposed in order to determine the influence of O-vacancies on the band structure and self-activated luminescence. Therefore, the appearance of a new local energy level in the band gap will cause the wide-band optical transitions in the studied BaLuAlxZn4-xO7-(1-x)/2 materials.

Аннотация: A new bismuth pyrostannate-based composite Bi2(Sn0.7Fe0.3)2O7-x/Bi2Fe4O9 (BSFO/BFO) has been obtained by the solid-state synthesis. Temperature dependences of the magnetic hysteresis and remanent magnetization and the nonlinear field dependence of the magnetization for the Bi2Fe4O9 antiferromagnet have been established. A temperature of the formation of canted sublattices in the antiferromagnet with the occurrence of a spontaneous moment in mullite has been determined. The mechanism of the electric polarization hysteresis and the temperature dependence of the remanent polarization have been established. It has been shown, that, below the Néel temperature, the dipole polarization is induced by a lone electron pair of bismuth ions. At T > TN, the migration polarization is caused by the charge carrier density at the chemical potential. A significant increase in the remanent magnetization of mullite in the bismuth pyrostannate matrix with oxygen vacancies over a value typical of polycrystalline mullite has been established. Remanent magnetization is explained in terms of ferron model.

Аннотация: The evolution of optical absorption spectra of the ferromagnetic semiconductor VBO3 under high pressures up to 70 GPa has been investigated. It has been revealed that, below the fundamental absorption edge (E (g1) = 3.02 eV), the spectra exhibit a series of bands V1 (2.87 eV), V2 (2.45 eV), V3 (1.72 eV), and V4(1.21 eV) due to the d-d transitions in the V3+ ion and charge-transfer excitations. A model of the electronic structure of the VBO3 semiconductor has been constructed. This model combines the one-electron description of the s and p states of boron and oxygen and the many-electron description of the vanadium d states.
