The relation between the longitudinal
susceptibility
χ and the order parameter temperature dependence measured experimentally has been established for uniaxial nematics within the framework of the Landaude Gennes theory. The absolute values of χ for the nematic phase, with MBBA as an example, have been obtained from experimental data for the first time and the critical behaviour of χ has been studied.

Аннотация:
Strong fluctuations of local fields may result in very large optical nonlinearities in small-particle composites. Enhancement associated with particle clustering is found for a number of optical processes, including four-wave mixing (FWM), third-harmonic generation (THG), Raman scattering, and nonlinear refraction and absorption in Kerr media. Field fluctuations and optical nonlinear susceptibilities are especially large in fractal clusters. The enhancement of optical processes is expressed in terms of the resonant linear absorption by collective dipolar eigenmodes in a cluster, and quality factors, q, of the modes (q much greater than 1). It is shown that the
susceptibility
of a composite material consisting of random small-particle clusters is proportional to q(3) for Raman scattering and the Kerr optical nonlinearity, and to q(4) and q(6) for THG and FWM, respectively. For all of these processes, a spectral dependence of the effective
susceptibility
is found. Broad-scale numerical simulations of the optical response in small-particle composites are performed to complement the theory. The simulations are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data.

Аннотация:
The combined effect of the ligand crystal field and the exchange interaction on the Cu2+ cation in CuGeO3 is examined. It is shown that, if the magnitude of the exchange interaction exceeds the splitting of the energy levels of the d(x2-y2) and d(xy) orbitals, then an alternate filling of the d orbitals along a chain (orbital ordering) is possible. This effect creates an antiferromagnetic interaction between Cu2+ pairs in 90 degrees exchange and a doubling of the lattice period. A Jahn-Teller pseudoeffect causes singletization of the ground state of the antiferromagnetic chain of Cu2+ spins. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7834(98)02609-4].

This paper is a theoretical investigation of the effect of inhomogeneities in the period of a ferromagnetic superlattice on the high-frequency superlattice
susceptibility
. The calculations are done for a model in which the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is taken as the physical parameter that characterizes both the ideal superlattice and a partially randomized superlattice. It is found that as the inhomogeneities become more intense, the two resonance peaks corresponding to the splitting of the spectrum at the edge of the Brillouin zone of the superlattice broaden, move closer to each other, and finally merge into one. The height of this peak increases and the peak width decreases as the intensity of the inhomogeneities increases further. The effect of inhomogeneities on the
susceptibility
differs dramatically in the two limits of short- and long-wave inhomogeneities: in the latter case (in contrast to the former) the dependence of the separation of the
susceptibility
peaks on the intensity and correlation properties of the inhomogeneities is nonmonotonic. The possibility of observing these effects in spin-wave resonance experiments involving multilayer magnetic films is also discussed. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7761(99)01510-3].

CuB2O4 single crystals have been grown and their magnetic and resonance properties have been investigated for the first time. The temperature dependence of the

was found to contain features at T = 21 and 10 K. The CuB2O4 single crystal transformed at T = 21 K to a weakly ferromagnetic state. The sharp drop in
susceptibility
at T 10 K is caused by a transition of the magnetic system of CuB2O4 to an antiferromagnetic state. The effective magnetic moment of the Cu2+ ion, determined from the high-temperature part of the magnetic
susceptibility
, is 1.77 mu(B). The room-temperature g factors are, respectively, 2.170 and 2.133 for magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal. Calculations of the thermodynamic quantities, and the spectra of spinons, triplet excitations, and two-particle spin-singlet (Delta S-z = 0, +/- 1) excitations for a weakly coupled antiferromagnetic S = 1/2 spin chain are made using a mean-field approximation for the interchain couplings (J(2)) by the quantum Monte Carlo method. The mass gaps in these excitation spectra are estimated as functions of the interchain coupling. The critical held H-c, and the temperatures at which the spinon and singlet gaps close (T-1 and T-2, respectively) are obtained. Some peculiarities of the staggered magnetization, the specific heat, and the spin-spin correlation function are found at T-1 = 0.9J(2), T-2 = 1.5J(2), H-c = 3.8J(2), as determined by linear function fitting for J(2)/J(1) < 0.15 The intrachain and interchain couplings, and the staggered magnetization for KCuF3, Sr2CuO3, and Ca2CuO3 are estimated, and mass gaps are predicted to exist in the spectra of the spinons and the singlet two-particle excitations.

Аннотация:
An experimental study is reported regarding the temperature dependence of the magnetic
susceptibility
of a CuB(2)O(4) tetragonal single crystal within the 4.2-200-K range. It has been established that the magnetic
susceptibility
exhibits anomalies at 21 and 10 K and depends strongly on crystal orientation in the magnetic field. A study has been carried out of the field dependences of the magnetization of CuB(2)O(4) at various temperatures and crystal orientations. It is shown that for T 21 K, the crystal is in a paramagnetic state determined by Cu(2+) copper ions with an effective magnetic moment of 1.77 mu(B). Within the 10-21 K interval, the field dependence of the magnetization is typical of a weak ferromagnet with magnetic moments of the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices lying in the tetragonal plane of the crystal. The spontaneous weakly-ferromagnetic moment is 0.56 emu/g at 10 K. The canting angle of the sublattice magnetic moments, determined by the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction, is 0.49 degrees. It is believed that below 10 K, the CuB(2)O(4) crystal retains its easy-plane magnetic structure, but with a zero spontaneous magnetic moment. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

A sharp peak of magnetic
susceptibility
has been observed in the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of uniaxial magnetic films placed in a planar field directed orthogonal to the easy magnetization axis, along which a pumping high-frequency magnetic field has been oriented. The peak width is considerably narrower than the line width of the uniform ferromagnetic resonance, and its position in a field equal to the film anisotropy field does not depend on the pumping frequency. The nature of the peak is associated with a drastic increase in the static transverse
susceptibility

Magnetic
susceptibility
, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption have been studied in a glass system 20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2 + GeO2) with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+ ions. Computer simulations of the EPR spectra show that the short-range ordering in the environment of the Gd3+ ions is well preserved. The relative distribution widths of the ligand coordinates are less than 2%. In the more heavily doped glasses the EPR spectra are superpositions of signals arising from isolated ions and ferromagnetic clusters. The increase of Gd3+ concentration is shown to change substantially the strong optical absorption edge while only small changes of f-f absorption band characteristics are observed. This difference is associated with the different effect of the Gd ion clustering on the mechanisms of the strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and the f-f absorption.
