Аннотация: The effect of annealing temperature on the structure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline cobalt films has been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetometric (vibrational magnetometer) techniques. Interpretation of the experimental data demonstrates that the initial films have an amorphous-like structure due to the high degree of disordering in the intergranular regions and nanoparticles. This structure transforms into the equilibrium polycrystalline state through the formation of a number of intermediate phases. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/ Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Transport through quantum and microwave cavities is studied by analytic and numerical techniques. In particular, we consider the statistics for a finite net probability current (Poynting vector) flowing through an open ballistic Sinai billiard to which two opposite leads/wave guides are attached. We show that if the net probability current is small, the scattering wave function inside the billiard is well approximated by a Gaussian random complex field. In this case, the current statistics are universal and obey simple analytic forms. For larger net currents, these forms still apply over several orders of magnitudes. However, small characteristic deviations appear in the tail regions. Although the focus is on electron and microwave billiards, the analysis is relevant also to other classical wave cavities as, for example, open planar acoustic reverberation rooms, elastic membranes, and water surface waves in irregularly shaped vessels.

Аннотация: Solid-state synthesis in Ni/Fe/MgO(001) bilayer epitaxial thin films has been studied experimentally. The phase sequence Fe/Ni -- (similar to350degreesC)Ni(3)Fe -- (similar to400degreesC)NiFe -- (similar to550degreesC)gamma(par) is formed as the annealing temperature increases. The crystal structure in the invar region consists of epitaxially intergrown single-crystal blocks consisting of the paramagnetic gamma(par) and ferromagnetic NiFe phases, which satisfy the orientation relationship [100](001)NiFe parallel to [100](001)gamma(par). It has been shown that the nucleation temperatures of the Ni(3)Fe, NiFe, and gamma(par) phases coincide with the temperatures of solid-state transformations in the Ni-Fe system. Аннотация: The films of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal doped with an ionic surfactant were studied. The surface-anchoring modification effect caused by the local increase in the concentration of surface-active ions was observed at the polymer-liquid crystal interface under the action of an electric field. The modification of the boundary conditions leads to the transformation of the orientational structure of the nematic droplets and, as a result, to an appreciable change in their texture patterns and light-scattering efficiency at the interfaces. The monopolar director configurations (normal and curved) arising in the process of orientational structure transformations are considered and their typical textures are demonstrated. The possibility that the monopolar structure can be formed is theoretically substantiated by the computer simulation of the director field in a nematic droplet with the boundary conditions corresponding to the experiment.

Аннотация: The atomic and electronic structures of a set of proposed pentagonal thin (1.6 nm in diameter) silicon/silica quantum nanodots (QDs) and nanowires (NWs) with narrow interface, as well as parent metastable silicon structures (1.2 nm in diameter), were studied using cluster B3LYP/6-31G(*) and periodic boundary condition (PBC) plane-wave (PW) pseudopotential (PP) local-density approximation methods. The total density of states (TDOS) of the smallest quasispherical QD (Si-85) corresponds well to the PBC PW PP LDA TDOS of the crystalline silicon. The elongated SiQDs and SiNWs demonstrate the metallic nature of the electronic structure. The surface oxidized layer opens the band gap in the TDOS of the Si/SiO2 species. The top of the valence band and the bottom of conduction band of the particles are formed by the silicon core derived states. The theoretical band gap width is determined by the length of the Si/SiO2 clusters and describes the size confinement effect in the experimental photoluminescence spectra of the silica embedded nanocrystalline silicon with high accuracy.

Аннотация: The solid-phase synthesis of the Co(7)Sm(2) and Co(17)Sm(2) magnetically hard phases in Co/Sm/Co(110) epitaxial film systems has been experimentally investigated. The Co(7)Sm(2) phase is first formed at the Sm/Co interface at a relatively low (similar to 300 degrees C) temperature. As the annealing temperature increases to similar to 450 degrees C, the Co(17)Sm(2)(110) phase grows epitaxially on the Co(7)Sm(2)(110) phase. The saturation magnetization and biaxial anisotropy constant in the samples vary with the formation of the Co(7)Sm(2) and Co(17)Sm(2) phases. Investigations of the solidphase synthesis in the nanofilms reveal the existence of a new structure phase transition at 300 degrees C in the Co-Sm system with a high cobalt content.
