Аннотация: Temperature and field dependences of the magnetization of VBO3 and CrBO3 single crystals with the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the (111) basal plane were measured. VBO3 was found to have a considerable uniaxial anisotropy with a field H-a approximate to 6.25 T. CrBO3 was shown to exhibit not only uniaxial but also hexagonal anisotropy. The experimental anisotropy constants were estimated, and their temperature dependences are presented. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Magnetic and optical properties of GdFe3-xGax(BO3)(4) single crystals are investigated by Mossbauer and optical spectroscopy. The GdFe3(BO3)(4) multielectron band structure model is derived. A high- and low-spin crossover of Fe3+ ion, a collapse of the magnetic moment, the suppression of Coulomb correlations, and insulator-semiconductor transition are predicted. Аннотация: Temperature-dependent high-resolution optical spectra of the Er3+ probe ion in DyFe3(BO3)(4) and HoFe3(BO3)(4) are reported. The data provide the temperature of magnetic ordering and direction of the Fe3+ magnetic moments. Both compounds order magnetically at T-N = 39 +/- 1K. The magnetic structure of DyFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-axis type, while that of HoFe3(BO3)(4) is of the easy-plane type. The role of anisotropic interactions between the iron and the rare-earth subsystems is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Orthorhombic bismuth triborate (delta-BiB3O6) Single crystals were grown via the top-seeded method at atmospheric pressure. delta-BiB3O6 is shown to be a stable polymorph at temperatures close to the melting point while alpha-BiB3O6 is a metastable one. Optical, acoustic and electromechanical properties of delta-BiB3O6 are measured. Possibility of doping delta-BiB3O6 with large amounts of rare earths is demonstrated. Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements were performed on iron borates RFe(3)(BO(3))(4)(R = Y, Ho) to investigate the low temperature magnetic structures and to clarify the role of the rare earth in the formation of the long-range magnetic order. Both compounds see an identical magnetic propagation vector tau = [ 0, 0, 1/2] within the P3(1)21 crystallographic space group appear at Neel temperatures of T(N) = 37 K for the Y and TN = 38 K for the Ho compound. The strong polarization effect of the Fe sublattice on the Ho(3+) ions leads to the simultaneous ordering of both sublattices while the competition between their anisotropies governs the spin-reorientation process at T(SR) = 5 K. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of the determined structural details and the specific rare-earth ions present including information on compounds investigated earlier.

Аннотация: Neutron diffraction, susceptibility and magnetization measurements (for R = Er only) were performed on iron borates RFe3(BO3)(4) (R = Pr, Er) to investigate details of the crystallographic structure, the low temperature magnetic structures and transitions and to study the role of the rare earth anisotropy. PrFe3(BO3)(4), which crystallizes in the spacegroup R32, becomes antiferromagnetic at T-N = 32 K, with t = [0 0 3/2], while ErFe3(BO3)(4), which keeps the P3(1)21 symmetry over the whole studied temperature range 1.5 K T 520 K, becomes antiferromagnetic below T-N

Аннотация: Hard x-ray scattering experiments with a photon energy of 100 keV were performed as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field on selected compounds of the RFe3(BO3)4 family. The results show the presence of several diffraction features, in particular, nonresonant magnetic reflections in the magnetically ordered phase and structural reflections that violate the diffraction conditions for the low-temperature phase P3(1)21 of the rare-earth iron borates. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic superlattice reflections corroborate the magnetic structures of the borate compounds obtained by neutron diffraction. The detailed analysis of the intensity and scattering cross section of the magnetic reflection reveals details of the magnetic structure of these materials such as the spin domain structure of NdFe3(BO3)(4) and GdFe3(BO3)(4). Furthermore we find that the correlation length of the magnetic domains is around 100 angstrom for all the compounds and that the Fe moments are rotated 53 degrees +/- 3 degrees off from the hexagonal basal plane in GdFe3(BO3)(4).

Аннотация: SmFe3(BO3)(4) belongs to the family of rare-earth RFe3(BO3)(4) multiferroics. We present the first measurements of the optical spectra of SmFe3(BO3)(4) (on single crystals) and report the data on the crystal-field levels and their symmetries for the ground multiplet H-6(5/2) [0 (Gamma(4)). 135 (Gamma(56)), and 220 (Gamma(4)) cm(-1)] and on the ground-state exchange splitting (13.2 cm(-1) at 1.7 K), important to interpret the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and thermodynamic properties of this compound. The observed exchange splitting of the Sm3+ Kramers doublets manifests the magnetic ordering in SmFe3(BO3)(4) at 32 +/- 1 K. From a comparison of the temperature-dependent spectra of the Sm3+ ion in SmFe3(BO3)(4) and in Nd-Gd mixed iron borate where the magnetic spin reorientation has been found earlier, we suggest the easy-plane arrangement of the Fe spins in SmFe3(BO3)(4). The samarium iron borate preserves the R32 (D-3(7)) crystal structure at all the investigated temperatures (down to 1.7 K). (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
