Аннотация:
The reflection spectra of cholesteric liquid crystals dispersed in polymer and comprising pyrimidine dopes are investigated in the entire temperature range of the mesophase existence. One or several oxyphenyl substituents in an ortho position implemented into a pyrimidine system induce the second reflection region. The reflection curves for different wavelengths corresponding to regions I and II merge with temperature. Thermodynamically equilibrium states of polymer-dispersed cholesterics under the influence of polar pyrimidine dopes are considered. The pyrimidine effect is modulated by the orientational near-surface potential. The existence of two space regions of a spherical droplet with different helix pitches is validated. The natural helix pitch is retained inside the droplet while a new pyrimidine-induced pitch is formed in a layer close to the droplet surface. The results obtained describe the existence of two reflection regions and the temperature behavior of the helix pitch.

Аннотация:
Strong fluctuations of local fields may result in very large optical nonlinearities in small-particle
composites
. Enhancement associated with particle clustering is found for a number of optical processes, including four-wave mixing (FWM), third-harmonic generation (THG), Raman scattering, and nonlinear refraction and absorption in Kerr media. Field fluctuations and optical nonlinear susceptibilities are especially large in fractal clusters. The enhancement of optical processes is expressed in terms of the resonant linear absorption by collective dipolar eigenmodes in a cluster, and quality factors, q, of the modes (q much greater than 1). It is shown that the susceptibility of a composite material consisting of random small-particle clusters is proportional to q(3) for Raman scattering and the Kerr optical nonlinearity, and to q(4) and q(6) for THG and FWM, respectively. For all of these processes, a spectral dependence of the effective susceptibility is found. Broad-scale numerical simulations of the optical response in small-particle
composites
are performed to complement the theory. The simulations are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data.

with varying volume content of the semiconductor ingredient and varying charge carrier concentration are found to be in qualitative agreement with theory which takes account of Andreev reflection of the carriers at the S-Sm and Sm-S surfaces of the S-Sm-S Josephson junction (where S is the superconductor and Sm is the semiconductor). HTSC + normal metal with magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities have been prepared. Transport properties of these
composites
have been studied. Supercurrent in the
composites
is weakened by magnetic impurities in greater degree than by nonmagnetic ones. It indicates that carriers in HTSC with 1-2-3 structure are mostly the conventional singlet pairs.

Measurements of current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2,Cu3O7 + BaPbO3 and Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 +BaPb0.9Sn0.1O3
composites
modelling network of superconducting-normal metal-superconducting (S-N-S) junctions in effectively 'clean' and 'dirty' limits, respectively, have been performed. Essential difference of CVCs for these
composites
is observed in spite of the identical preparation technique and experimental conditions. It is shown that the theory for S-N-S junctions [R. Kummel, U. Gunsenheimer, R. Nicolsky, Phys. Rev. B, 42 (1990) 3932] well describes the experimental CVCs of the
composites

Аннотация:
Measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance R(T) below the superconducting transition temperature have been performed at different values of the transport current in HTSC+CuO
composites
modeling a network of weak S - I - S Josephson junctions (S - superconductor, I - insulator). It has been shown experimentally that the temperature dependence R(T) at different values of the transport current is adequately described by means of the mechanism of thermally activated phase slippage developed by Ambegaokar and Halperin for tunnel structures. Within the framework of this model we have numerically calculated the temperature dependence of the critical current J c(T) as defined by various criteria. Qualitative agreement obtains between the measured and calculated temperature dependences J c(T). В© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7+NiTiO3 and Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7+MgTiO3 with insulator volume content 7.5% and 15% modelling a network of Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (S-I-S) junctions have been prepared. The ?(T) dependences of
composites
HTSC+MgTiO3 are described well by the mechanism of Thermally Activated Phase Slippage (TAPS). The anomalous behavior of resistivity ?(T) of HTSC+NiTiO3
composites
manifesting as a kink on ?(T) curves at some temperature Tm have been observed. In the temperature range Tm < T < TC the dissipation is Ohmic while below Tm the CVCs are strongly non-linear. This peculiarity is interpreted as arisen owing to Abrikosov vortices flow.

Аннотация:
Composites
simulating a network of weak metallic links and consisting of a classic 1-2-3 HTSC and a BaPbO3 metal oxide with incorporated Sn, Ni, and Fe impurities have been prepared. Experimental resistivity, magnetic, and Mossbauer studies of the BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3) nonsuperconducting components are presented. The transport properties of the HTSC + BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3)
composites
have been investigated. The superconducting properties of the
composites
are observed to be suppressed, both when the carrier mean free path in nonsuperconducting components with tin impurities decreases, and as a result of an additional interaction of the magnetic moments of (Fe, Ni) impurities with the spins of supercurrent carriers. The experimental temperature dependences of the composite critical current are analyzed in terms of the de Gennes theory for the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor structures. Bulk Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Cu1-xLixO
composites
with x = 0, 0.003 and 0.06 and varied volume content of Cu1-xLixO have been prepared. Analysis of the transport properties of the
composites
has shown that they can be represented as a network of superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor (S-Sm-S) weak links. The dependence of the critical current density on the normal resistance for the
composites
studied shows a behaviour similar to that for single Josephson junctions. The experimental temperature dependences of the critical current are qualitatively described in terms of a theory of S-Sm-S junctions that takes into account the Andreev reflection of carriers from the S-Sm and Sm-S interfaces.

Аннотация:
A model of a superconducting fault current limiter on a polycrystalline high-temperature superconductor basis is checked in the dc short circuit regime. Protection of load takes place under the conditions described in this paper. The use of ceramic materials with superconducting-normal metal-superconducting Josephson junction network having an S-type current-voltage characteristic (CVC) is shown to be effective for fault current limiter devices.

It was found that high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) based
composites
of the 1-2-3 (YBCO) + dielectric and YBCO + normal metal types exhibit large magnetoresistances in weak magnetic fields in a broad temperature range. This behavior is qualitatively explained using the concept of the irreversibility line in HTSCs and the mechanism of thermal fluctuations in the network of weak bonds of the Josephson type realized in HTSC
composites
. The HTSC-based
composites
exhibit a much higher sensitivity (as compared to that in the usual HTSC ceramics) to weak magnetic fields (below 300 Oe) at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, which is important for practical applications. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka /Interperiodica".
