Аннотация: The effect of restricted geometry on specific heat capacity and thermal expansion of the triglycine sulfate (TGS)–borosilicate glass composites have been studied first. A decrease in the entropy and temperature of the P21 ↔ P21/m phase transition in the TGS component with decreasing the glass matrix pore diameter at the invariable specific heat and thermal expansion coefficient has been observed. The estimates are indicative of the minor effect of internal pressure on the TGS pressure coefficient dTC/dp in the composites.

Аннотация: The aim of this paper was to study the effect of nanoscale inclusions of CuO as the second ingredient of composites on transport properties of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 polycrystals. The samples of YBa2Cu3O7−δ with different content of CuO nanoparticles were synthesized. The analysis of the magnetic properties was carried out within the extended critical state model. It was found that the addition of 0.5 and 1% of CuO nanoparticles leads to an increase in the intragranular density of the critical current at T= 4.2 K. A further increase of x from 2 to 15% and more than 40% decreases the critical current density. The critical current density higher than in the reference sample was also found in the samples with x= 20% and x= 24%.

Аннотация: The present study describes production of bacterial cellulose composites with silver nanoparticles and antibiotics and compares their properties. Bacterial cellulose (BC) composites synthesized in the culture of the strain of acetic acid bacterium Komagataeibacter xylinus VKPM B-12068 with silver nanoparticles, BC/AgNps, were produced hydrothermally, under different AgNO3 concentrations (0.0001, 0.001, and 0.01 M) in the reaction medium. The presence of silver in the BC/AgNp composites was confirmed by elemental analysis conducted using scanning electron microscopy with a system of X-ray spectral analysis. Analysis showed that the average atomic number of silver particles in composite samples depended on the concentration of AgNO3: as AgNO3 concentration in the reaction solution was increased, silver content in the composites increased from 0.044 to 0.37 mg/cm2. BC composites with amikacin and ceftriaxone were prepared by immersing dry BC films in solutions containing different concentrations of the antibiotics. The surface structure and properties and physicochemical and mechanical characteristics of composites were investigated using SEM, DSC, X-ray analysis, the system for measuring water contact angles, and electromechanical tensile testing machine. The disk-diffusion method and the shake-flask culture method used in this study showed that all experimental composites had pronounced antibacterial activity against E. coli, Ps. eruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and St. aureus, and the BC/antibiotic composites were more active than BC/AgNp ones; S. aureus was the most susceptible to the effect of BC composites. No potential cytotoxicity was detected in any of the BC/AgNp composites in the NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell culture, in contrast to the BC/antibiotic composites. These results suggest that BC composites constructed in the present study hold promise as dressings for managing wounds, including contaminated ones.

Аннотация: The model of a polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror is proposed. The mirror is a plane boundary of a metal–dielectric nanocomposite that consists of silver spheroidal nanoparticles dispersed in a transparent matrix. The dependence of reflection spectra on the shape of the nanoparticles is studied. It is shown that in one region of the spectrum, the mirror preserves the sign of polarization in the reflected light. © 2017, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Atomic and electronic structure of LSMO-based composites with carbon nanotubes were studied by means of density functional theory with respect to the termination of LSMO surface. The deformation of the tubes caused by the lattice mismatch with the substrate leads to a major change in their electronic structure. The surface terminated with Mn-O layer provides much stronger interaction with carbon nanotubes than Sr-O terminated one does. The interaction with transition metal atoms is essential for spin polarization of the nanotube while no spin injection was observed for Sr-O-supported tubes. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: Получены композиты на основе сверхвысокомолекулярного полиэтилена и углеродных нанотрубок методом смешивания компонентов в ксилоле при определенных температурах. Комплексные проводимости и диэлектрические проницаемости образцов материалов измерены в диапазоне частот от 100 Гц до 1 ГГц. Установлены условия синтеза как электропроводящих, так и диэлектрических композитов. При этом величина проводимости зависит не только от концентрации углеродных нанотрубок, но и от структуры их распределения в полимерной матрице, которая, в свою очередь, зависит от температурных условий получения композита.Composites based on ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene and carbon nanotubes were obtained by mixing the components in xylene at certain temperatures. The complex conductivities and permittivities of the material samples were measured in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 GHz. The conditions for the synthesis of both electrically conducting and dielectric composites were established. The conductivity depends not only on the concentration of carbon nanotubes, but also on the structure of their distribution in the polymer matrix, which in turn depends on the temperature conditions for obtaining the composite.

Аннотация: ZnO- and C-based heterostructures were fabricated by the layer-by-layer deposition technique using the ion-beam sputtering process. Structure, electrical and magnetic properties of fabricated heterostructures are discussed. The two-phase (ZnO and C) films are evolved into a multilayer structure, consisting of amorphous carbon and crystalline ZnO layers when the bilayer thickness increases. When carbon is added to ZnO, its electrical resistivity reduces. The conduction mechanism changes from the variable-range hopping in a narrow energy band to the nearest neighbors hopping in ZnO–C films with a thickness of h ˂ 150 nm. The temperature dependence of conductivity changes from the Arrhenius-like to logarithmic law, indicating that the strong charge localization turns into a weak one when the film thickness is about 150 nm. The negative magnetoresistance of up to 1% was detected at 77 K. The film ferromagnetism at the temperature of 10 K was not found.

Аннотация: The effect of the residual catalyst for the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the electrophysical properties of MWCNT-polyethylene composites produced by melt mechanical mixing was studied. The residual catalyst content was varied by changing the MWCNTs synthesis time. The nanotubes used in the work were characterized using transmission and scanning electron microscopy, atomic emission analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and magnetic permeability measurements. The structure of the synthesized composites was studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The dependences of the specific magnetization on the applied magnetic field, bulk electrical conductivity on the volumetric content of the filler in the composite, and the frequency dependences of the reflection, transmission, and absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the range 0.01-18 GHz were obtained. It was established that the obtained composites are characterized by a uniform distribution of nanotubes in the polymer matrix, and the dependence of the bulk electrical conductivity on the content of MWCNTs in the composite has a percolation character. Variation in the synthesis time of nanotubes allows producing MWCNTs with a high content of ferromagnetic particles, which are an alloy close in stoichiometry to the composition of the active component of the catalyst. It was shown that the use of composites modified with MWCNTs with a high content of residual catalyst is more effective for absorbing electromagnetic radiation due to an increase in their magnetic losses.

Аннотация: The influence of ultrasonic treatment on the strength and dielectric properties of composites based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) is studied. It is revealed that the ultrasonic treatment of composite melt at 130 °C results in the uniform distribution of nanotubes in the UHMWPE matrix, an increase in the degree of composite crystallinity by 10%, an increase in abrasion resistance by 37%, an increase in elongation at rupture by a factor of 2. The change in the physical and mechanical properties of the composite is caused by the change in the polymer matrix structure, taking place as a result of ultrasonic action, and does not depend on the presence of nanotubes in the polymer matrix.

Аннотация: YBa2Cu3O7 – δ–CuO composites with CuO particle contents of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10, 15, 20, and 24% were produced via arc plasma synthesis. Their magnetic properties were analyzed in the context of the expanded critical state model. In comparison with a reference sample, the critical current intragranular density increased in composites with CuO concentrations of 0.5, 1, 20, and 24%. The mechanisms of the influence of nanodopants on the change in the critical current density at various volume contents of nano-CuO were proposed as well.

Аннотация: Nanogranular Co-SiO2, and Co-CaF2 films are investigated using ferromagnetic resonance and magnetic measurements. The spectrum of standing spin-wave has been registered in the perpendicular experiment configuration for all types of films with the magnetic granules content above 52 vol.%. The dependences of resonance fields Hr of spin modes on the mode number squared Hr(n2) are non-linear. Such behavior is supposed to be the result of the fluctuations of magnetic parameters (the magnetization and the ferromagnetic exchange coupling) in nanocomposite films. A comparison between the magnetic properties of Co-SiO2 granular films and Co-CaF2 films is carried out. The surface anisotropy value Ks of Co-SiO2 films is evaluated from the surface resonance modes of spin-wave resonance spectra as 3.5×10-4s7×10-4 J/m2. The magnetic anisotropy of Co100-x(SiO2)x, Co100-x(CaF2)x films (34s and the surface magnetic anisotropy of films Ks are determined. It is found that surface anisotropy of granules is predominant.

Аннотация: The present study describes the synthesis of silver and zinc oxide nanobactericides from the phytogenic source Bupleurum aureum The synthesized nanobactericides were characterized and evaluated for bio-functionalization onto bacterial cellulose membrane which was synthesized by Komagataeibactencylinus B-12068 culture strain. The synthesis of nanobacterides were initially confirmed using UV-Visible spectroscopy which indicated localized surface resonance (LSPR) peaks at 415 nm for silver nanobactericides and 280 nm for zinc nanobactericides. The nature of the capping agent for synthesized nanobactericides was predicted using FTIR which confirmed the presence of functional moieties. XRD analysis revealed their crystalline nature while morphological characteristics were studied using TEM which confirmed the polydispersity of nanobactericides with the average size in the range of 20-25 nm. The nanobactericides were tested for their antimicrobial activity against seven multi-drug resistant pathogens which were clinically isolated from patients suffering from a myriad of microbial infections. The tested pathogens had antimicrobial resistance to ten different antibiotics and have been reported to be the major cause of nosocomial infections. The nanobactericides displayed significant activity against the test pathogens. Silver nanobactericides showed the highest activity against Escherichia coli strain 55 with a 24 mm zone of inhibition while zinc oxide nanobactericides displayed the highest activity against methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with a 20 mm inhibition zone. The bio- functionalized cellulose films (BCF) were characterized using SEM along with physicochemical analysis. The BCF's were evaluated for anti-bacterial activity against test pathogens which resulted in marked antimicrobial potential against multi-drug resistant bacteria and therefore has the potential to be utilized as an efficient alternative to counter drug resistant pathogens.

Аннотация: The effect of thermal cycling and sintering temperature on the chemical and thermodynamic stability of the bulk multiferroic xLa0.7Pb0.3MnO3–(1 – x)PbTiO3 quasi-ceramic and ceramic composites has been experimentally investigated. It is shown that the limiting temperature of the long-term sample firing should not exceed 1070 K. It has been found that sintering at this temperature and/or short-term exposure of the samples at higher temperatures (up to 1220 K) significantly increase the sample compactness, stabilize the thermal expansion, and enhance the quality of the composites. It has been established that the component grain integrity is violated by shrinkage of the samples and a sharp change in their volume during the phase transition of a ferroelectric component.

Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of an investigation into the influence of magnetic fields (0-60 kOe) on the temperature dependences of the electrical resistance R(T) of the Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + CuO composites. The structure of these composites is considered to be a network of tunnel-type Josephson junctions in which a nonsuperconducting component (CuO) forms boundaries (barriers) between high-temperature superconducting crystallites. The temperature dependence R(T) of the composites has two steps characteristic of granular superconductors: (i) an abrupt change in the electrical resistance at the critical temperature of high-temperature superconducting crystallites and (ii) a smooth transition to the superconducting state under the influence of the boundaries between the crystallites. The experimental dependences R(T) are analyzed within the Ambegaokar-Halperin model of thermal fluctuations in Josephson junctions and the flux creep model. An increase in the magnetic field leads to a crossover from the Ambegaokar-Halperin mechanism to the flux creep mechanism. The temperature dependences R(T) in the range of weak magnetic fields (from 0 to 10(2) Oe) are adequately described by the relationship following from the Ambegaokar-Halperin model. In the range of strong magnetic fields (from 10(3) to 6 x 10(4) Oe), the dissipation obeys the Arrhenius law R similar to exp(-U(H)/T)], which is characteristic of the flux creep model with a temperature-independent pinning energy U(H). The effective Josephson coupling energies and the pinning energies corresponding to the Ambegaokar-Halperin and flux creep mechanisms are determined.

Аннотация: The experimental results of the effect of the magnetic field (up to 60 kOe) on the broadening of the resistive transition of bulk composites Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2CU3O7 (YBCO) + CuO are presented. These composites represent the network of the tunnel-type Josephson junctions where the copper oxide acts as a material forming barriers between YBCO crystallites. The mechanisms responsible for broadening of the resistive transition under magnetic field are discussed. The analysis of experimental R(7) dependences have shown that in the low field range 0-10(2) Oe, the R(7) dependences are described well by the Ambegaokar-Halperin (AH) model. In the range 10(3)-6 x 10(4) Oe, the dissipation follows Arrhenius law R similar to exp(-U(H)/k(B)T) characteristic for thermally activated flux creep model. Аннотация: Strong fluctuations of local fields may result in very large optical nonlinearities in small-particle composites. Enhancement associated with particle clustering is found for a number of optical processes, including four-wave mixing (FWM), third-harmonic generation (THG), Raman scattering, and nonlinear refraction and absorption in Kerr media. Field fluctuations and optical nonlinear susceptibilities are especially large in fractal clusters. The enhancement of optical processes is expressed in terms of the resonant linear absorption by collective dipolar eigenmodes in a cluster, and quality factors, q, of the modes (q much greater than 1). It is shown that the susceptibility of a composite material consisting of random small-particle clusters is proportional to q(3) for Raman scattering and the Kerr optical nonlinearity, and to q(4) and q(6) for THG and FWM, respectively. For all of these processes, a spectral dependence of the effective susceptibility is found. Broad-scale numerical simulations of the optical response in small-particle composites are performed to complement the theory. The simulations are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data.

Аннотация: The angular dependence of the magnetoresistance of polycrystalline Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7-CuO composites has been studied. These composites represent a system of Josephson junctions and exhibit a large magnetoresistance at 77 K. In addition to the isotropic component, there is the angle-dependent component proportional to sin(2)theta, where theta is the angle between the directions of current and magnetic field. This behavior is unambiguous evidence for the process of flux flow in the Josephson medium realized in the composites.
