Аннотация: The transformation of the director configuration upon changing boundary conditions from planar to homeotropic for bipolar nematic droplets dispersed in a polymeric matrix was studied. The characteristic textural patterns are presented for droplets with different concentrations of homeotropic surfactants, and their orientational structure is identified. The scenario predicted earlier by G.E. Volovik and O.D. Lavrentovich (ZhETF 85, 1997 (1983)) for the transformation of orientational structure of nematic droplets from bipolar to radial, without the formation of additional disclinations, is revealed. It is shown that, by using the computational method of minimization of the director elastic-strain energy in the droplet bulk and by introducing the inhomogeneous boundary conditions, one can obtain orientational structures that are analogous to the observed ones.(C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Brief review of the orientational structures within the droplets of chiral as well as achiral nematics with the heterogeneous boundary conditions is reported. The modification of boundary conditions in the 5CB/polyvinylbutyral and LN-396/cholesterylacetate/polyvinylbutyral compositions with the planar anchoring at the interface is created by addition of the homeotropic surfactant (lecithin). Sequences of the novel stable and non-stable orientational structures being realized within the droplets of achiral nematic are presented. For the LN-396 nematic droplets doped by cholesterylacetate the formation of a spherulite structure has been shown when the tangential surface anchoring is modified to the homeotropic one.

Аннотация: The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.

Аннотация: В работе изучены преобразования конфигурации директора в каплях нематика, вызванные тер- моиндуцированной модификацией граничных условий. Исследования проводились для нематиче- ского жидкого кристалла 5СВ (4-н-пентил-4-цианобифенил), который допировался сурфактан- том лецитином, а затем диспергировался в поливинилпирролидоне. Показано, что при нагре- вании граничные условия изменяются от планарных к гомеотропным, что приводит к транс- формации конфигурации директора в капле нематика. При охлаждении образца наблюдалось об- ратное изменение поверхностного сцепления от гомеотропного к планарному. В обоих случаях ориентационно-структурные превращения могут происходить по двум различным сценариям.
The transformations of the director configuration within the nematic droplets induced by temperature modification of boundary conditions have been studied. Nematic liquid crystal 5CB (4-n-penthyl-4- cyanobiphenyl) doped with lecithin and dispersed in polyvinylpyrrolidone has been tested. As was shown, under heating the boundary conditions are changed from planar to homeotropic. It results in transformation of the director configuration in the nematic droplets. The inverse modification of the surface anchoring from homeotropic to planar has been observed at cooling. In both cases the transformations of orientational structure may occur in two different scenarios.

Аннотация: A comparative study of file energies and the electronic structure of MgBx nanotubes is performed within the framework of the density functional theory. Different basic compositions (x = 2 for diboride and x = 3 for triboride) and different diameters (3 angstrom < D < 18 angstrom), as well the exterior, interior, and staggered placement of magnesium atoms, are considered. Energy analysis reveals a nontrivial bending behavior of the MgB2 sheets. such that the tubes with exterior and staggered configurations display the energy minima at certain small diameters (of the boron cage sublattice). The semiconducting behavior of narrow MgB2 nanotubes with exterior Mg position was observed.

Аннотация: A new model of the electron pressure anisotropy in the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented for the case of antiparallel configuration of magnetic fields. The plasma anisotropy is investigated as source of collisionless dissipation. By separating electrons in the vicinity of the neutral line into two broad classes of inflowing and accelerating populations, it is possible to derive a simple closure for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. The appearance of these two electron populations near the neutral line is responsible for the anisotropy and collisionless dissipation in the magnetic reconnection. Particle-in-cell simulations verify the proposed model, confirming first the presence of two particle populations and second the analytical results for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. Furthermore, test-particle calculations are performed to compare our approach with the model of electron pressure anisotropy in the inner electron diffusion region by Fujimoto and Sydora [Phys. Аннотация: This study is concerned with the optical response of an electro-optical material consisting of nematic liquid crystal as well as ionic surfactant as a dopant. The dopant is a key component to carry out the working of the resulting device through configuration switching. The operational principle is based on the surface anchoring transition induced by a steady electric field. The dynamic characteristics of the electro-optical cell can be considerably improved when the nematic layer is reoriented from the initially homeoplanar director configuration into the twisted state. Besides, a method to shorten the relaxation time is demonstrated by using a controlling pulse with a bipolar waveform. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We investigate orientational nematic liquid crystal structures that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption, their stability against the schlieren texture and features of point and linear singularities in them. We demonstrate that surface disclination lines, which also occur due to molecular adsorption, can lead to azimuthal anchoring of a bulk layer and make the singularities with the charge m=+/- 1 stable. We consider the director field distribution in a nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tend to impose uniform planar ordering and point defects that impart the radial configuration to the director. With the use of the calculation, we analyse the energies of elastic distortions of the director field for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial configurations, depending on the nematic layer thickness.

Аннотация: Исследованы ориентационные структуры нематических жидких кристаллов, возникающие на поверхности полимера в результате адсорбции, и их устойчивость относительно шлирен-текстуры. Изучены особенности точечных и линейных сингулярностей в исследуемых структурах. Рассмотрены конфигурации директора в слое нематика, определяемые комбинацией двух ориентирующих факторов: воздействием линейной дисклинации, фактора, стремящегося задать однородное планарное упорядочение, а также влиянием точечного дефекта, задающего радиальную структуру директора. С использованием расчетного метода проведен сравнительный анализ энергии упругих искажений поля директора для различных видов конфигураций: радиально-планарной, радиально-гомеотропной и радиально-радиальной в зависимости от толщины слоя нематика.
The orientational structures of nematic liquid crystals that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption and their stability with respect to the schlieren texture are investigated. Features of point and linear singularities in these structures are studied. The director configurations in nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tends to impose uniform planar ordering and point defect that imparts the radial structure to the director are considered. The analysis of the elastic distortions energies of the director configurations for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial structures, depending on the nematic layer thickness was performed using the calculation method.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of bipolar nematic droplets encapsulated in polymer film is examined both experimentally and theoretically. A method for the simulation of the angular distribution of scattered light is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations taking into account the director configuration within liquid crystal droplets and their bipolar axes orientation. The director configuration in nematic droplets is calculated using the relaxation method of the free energy minimization. The characteristics of the sample, including distribution of droplet sizes and shape anisometry, are measured in details. The experimental results and theoretical data agree closely with each other. Аннотация: An investigation of the mechanisms responsible for the manifestation of the piezoelectric effect in configurations that should not allow for piezoelectric response in the paramagnetic state due to their symmetry. In spite of these symmetry constraints the existence of such a piezoelectric response is detected in this study. It is assumed that these results are associated with the surface on which symmetry constraints are absent. In the magnetically ordered state an indirect piezoelectric effect is both symmetrically permissible and actually observable in these configurations, and it consists of the combined effects of magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic mechanisms.

Аннотация: The polymer dispersed nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the tilted surface anchoring has been studied. The droplet orientational structures with two point surface defects – boojums and the surface ring defect – are formed within the films. The director tilt angle α = 40° ± 4° at the droplet interface and LC surface anchoring strength Ws ~ 10–6 (J m−2) have been estimated. The bipolar axes within the studied droplets of oblate ellipsoidal form can be randomly oriented are oriented randomly relatively to the ellipsoid axes as opposed to the droplets with homeotropic and tangential anchoring.

Аннотация: Optical textures and appropriate orientational structures have been studied within droplets of chiral nematic dispersed in polymer assigning the homeotropic anchoring. The helix axis of the chiral structure inside droplets forms the bipolar configuration. The optical droplet textures were analysed in the unpolarised light, analyser switching-off scheme and in crossed polarisers. The twisted loop defect reveals itself convincingly in all schemes. Its appearance at the optical patterns of the chiral nematic droplets has been examined depending on their size and the aspect direction. The existence of the defect has been verified by the structural and optical calculations. The effect of an electric field on both the defect line shape and the orientational structure of chiral nematic has been studied.

Аннотация: Orientational structures formed in nematic and cholesteric layers with tangential-conical boundary conditions have been investigated. LC cells with one substrate specifying the conical surface anchoring and another substrate specifying the tangential one have been considered. The director configurations and topological defects have been identified analyzing the texture patterns obtained by polarizing microscope in comparison with the structures and optical textures calculated by free energy minimization procedure of director field and finite-difference time-domain method, respectively. The domains, periodic structures and two-dimensional defects proper to the LC cells with tangential-conical anchoring have been studied depending on the layer thickness and cholesteric pitch.

Аннотация: Orientational structures formed in cholesteric droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring have been studied by means of polarization optical microscopy and computer simulations. It has been found that, when the ratio of the size of droplets to the pitch of a cholesteric helix ranges from 1.4 to 2.9, an axisymmetric toroidal cholesteric structure is formed with a topological linear defect in the form of an equatorially located surface ring. The features of the toroidal structure in cholesteric droplets and their optical textures for various observation schemes are examined in detail.

Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: We present detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn3Ge. Time-of-flight and triple-axis spectroscopy experiments were conducted at the temperature of 6 K, well below the high magnetic ordering temperature of 370 K. The magnetic excitations have a 5-meV gap and display an anisotropic dispersive mode reaching ~ 90 meV at the boundaries of the magnetic Brillouin zone. The spectrum at the zone center shows two additional excitations that demonstrate characteristics of both magnons and phonons. Ab initio lattice-dynamics calculations show that these can be associated with the magnon-polaron modes resulting from the hybridization of the spin fluctuations and the low-energy optical phonons. The observed magnetoelastic coupling agrees with the previously found negative thermal expansion in this compound and resembles the features reported in the spectroscopic studies of other antiferromagnets with similar noncollinear spin structures.

Аннотация: The electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are highly dependent on the features of the contained liquid crystal (LC) droplets. Cholesteric LC droplets with homeotropic boundaries can form several topologically different orientational structures, including ones with single and more point defects, layer-like, and axisymmetric twisted toroidal structures. These structures are very sensitive to an applied electric field. In this work, we have demonstrated experimentally and by computer simulations that twisted toroidal droplets reveal strong structural response to the electric field. In turn, this leads to vivid changes in the optical texture in crossed polarizers. The response of droplets of different sizes were found to be equivalent in terms of dimensionless parameters. In addition, the explanation of this phenomenon showed a comparison of theoretical and experimental structural response curves aids to determine the shape of the droplet. Finally, we demonstrated that the addition of a dichroic dye allows such films to be used as optical filters with adjustable color even without polarizers.
