Аннотация:
Thermal atomic vibrations in the cubic phase of Cs//2NaNdCl//6 single crystal undergoing the structural phase transition (PT) at 138 K are investigated from the data of X-ray
diffraction
obtained at 278, 218, and 148 K. A significant anisotropy of thermal vibrations and their deviations from harmonic behavior are found for the Cl-atoms of the structure. These atoms displace from their equilibrium positions below PT due to the tilts of the octahedral groups.

Аннотация:
Crystal structure of RbLiCrO4 was determined in G3 phase (sp. gr. P31c) at 293, 428, 493, 523 K and in G2 phase (sp. gr. P63) at 553, 583 K applying X-ray
diffraction
data. The investigated crystals exhibit ‘twinning by merohedry’. The analysis of intensities and influence of anomalous scattering on them allowed us to choose twin elements and atomic configurations of twin domains for all the investigated specimens.

Аннотация:
The crystal structures of the G3 (space group P31c) and G2 (space group P6(3)) phases of RbLiCrO4 have been determined from X-ray
diffraction
data (Mo Kalpha radiation) at 293, 428, 493 and 523 K (G3 phase) and 553 and 583 K (G2 phase). The RbLiCrO4 crystals exhibit twinning by merohedry with twin laws in the G3 phase: 2 parallel-to [001], m perpendicular-to [001], 1BAR; in the G2 phase: m parallel-to [001], 2 perpendicular-to [001], 1BAR. The analysis of
diffraction
intensities and influence of anomalous scattering on them provided the unambiguous determination of the twin laws for all the specimens investigated. The structure has been refined using the approximation of the anharmonic thermal vibrations of atoms.

Аннотация:
The n-alkanethiols CH3(CH2)(n-1) on the crystal surface of gold (111) are considered. Couplings between atoms (C, H) of the n-alkanethiols were modelled by the Morse potential, and couplings between the n-alkanethiols and the crystal surface were modelled by 12-3 potentials. Because of symmetry Z(2) of the n-alkanethiols in a tilted state, the system can be reduced to the Ising model on the triangular lattice, the phase diagram of which can be explicitly considered. Depending on the choice of the coupling parameters, the ordered state of the system may form an incommensurate or 2X1 superstructure. The temperatures of the phase transition, equilibrium tilting, twisting, and azimuthal angles are found to depend on the Morse coupling constants.

Аннотация:
A system of mutual relationships (a hierarchy) is constructed between various perovskite-like crystal structures based on available structural data. All the perovskite-like structures are characterized by a common indicator of their relationship-the presence of layers, stacks, or frameworks made up of BX6 octahedra linked at their vertices (where B is a cation, X is an anion) or fragments of octahedra in the form of BX5 pyramids or BX4 squares in anion-deficient compounds. In layered structures, these stacks are joined to each other by various intermediate blocks. It is well known that one homological series of compounds is constructed by increasing the number of layers in a stack while preserving the same kind of connecting block. Crystals of various series that contain identical stacks (but different blocks of one or two types) can also be related to one another via this feature. The hierarchical system includes compounds with small distortions in their structures for various reasons. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация:
Many compounds with general chemical formula A2BB?X6 and with tolerance factor value t < 1 crystallize in the elpasolite (ordered perovskite) structure. Different preparative methods have been considered. For example, the Bridgman technique is the most suitable method of growing single crystals of halogenated elpasolites with monoatomic cations. Group-theory and symmetry analyses have allowed us to build a scheme of possible structural distortions connected with octahedral rotations and displacements of ions. Experimental observations have proven that ferroelastic phase transitions occurring most frequently in elpasolites are due to small octahedra tilts. Quantitative analysis allows the possibility of describing these transitions in the framework of the thermodynamic Landau theory. Hydrostatic pressure and the substitution of atoms in different crystallographic sites allow to change significantly the succession and the temperature of phase transitions. The hypothesis of bond stresses is able to predict the possible occurrence of a phase transition for a particular elpasolite and/or the role of the octahedra rotations in the transformation. The mechanism of phase transitions in elpasolites and related compounds has also been considered. One can assume that a displacive mechanism associated with a strong anharmonicity plays a large role in phase transitions occurring in compounds with monoatomic cations. On the other hand, for instance, in cryolites with ammonium cations, the transitions originate from an order-disorder phenomenon. В© 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Аннотация:
Crystalline Cs3Bi2I9, With the P6(3)/mmc symmetry at room temperature was studied by Laue and four-circle neutron diffractometry from room temperature down to 50 K. At T-0 = 220 K the crystal undergoes a second-order proper ferroelastic phase transition to a polydomain structure with a nonprimitive monoclinic C12/m1 space group. Satellites were not found below T-0, indicating that the continuous distribution of sites observed in previous I-127 nuclear quadrupole resonance experiments is due either to an undetected incommensurate phase characterized by a very small displacement amplitude, or due to the fraction of the crystal volume occupied by domain walls. We argue that thick domain walls are expected in the present structure due to the absence of mechanical compatibility between domains.

over a wide temperature range, including the temperatures of two known phase transitions and the third transition found recently. It is established that the symmetry of phases changes in the following sequence: O-h(5) - Fm3m (Z = 4) ↔ C-2h(5) - P12(1)/n1 (Z = 2)↔ C-2h(3) -I12/m1 (Z = 16) ↔ C-i(1) - I (l) over bar (Z = 16). Аннотация:
Faraday rotation (FR) spectral, field, and temperature dependencies in oxide glasses with small additions of paramagnetic elements are investigated. Formation of ferrite nanoparticles in amorphous glass matrices is revealed by X-ray
diffraction
. Particles have crystal structure similar to spinel structure, their dimensions are about 10-24 nm. The FR field dependencies are typical for ferrimagnetic or superparamagnetic substances depending on particle size. Strong FR increase at the samples cooling (more than twice for some samples) in the temperature interval 105-273 K is observed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация:
The preparation., processing and characterization of the composite materials on high-T-c superconductor (HTSC) basis, YBa2Cu3O7/Ag and Y0.75Lu0.25Ba2Cu3O7/BaPbO3, is reported. The initial components YBa2Cu3O7 and BaPbO3 were prepared by the standard solid state reaction technique. The microstructures of the samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy. whilst the XRD paterns of the composites HTSC+Ag and HTSC+BaPbO3 revealed the 123 superconducting phase and the Ag or BaPbO3 structure. The chemical compositions of the powders and the interface zone were found by employing energy dispersive spectrometry. The resistive and magnetic measurements of the composites indicated the transition temperature 93.5 K. Application of such composite materials in the construction of a superconducting fault current limiter model is reported. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We report high-resolution X-ray
diffraction
, muon-spin-rotation spectroscopic and specific heat measurements in the double spin-chains compound LiCu2O2. The X-ray
diffraction
results show that the crystal structure of LiCu2O2 is orthorhombic down to T = 10 K. Anisotropic line-broadening of the
diffraction
peaks is observed, indicating disorder along the spin chains. Muon-spin relaxation and specific heat measurements show that LiCu2O2 undergoes a phase transition to a magnetic ordered state at T-1 similar to 24 K. The specific heat data exhibits a second lambda -like peak at T-2 similar to 32.5 K, which increases with increasing magnetic field in a similar way to that found in spin-ladder compounds. Аннотация:
The phase transitions in series of crystals with the general formulas A(2)BB'X-6 (X = F, Cl, Br, or CN) and Pb2BB'O-6 that belong to the elpasolite family (space group Fm(3) over bar m) are analyzed. The influence of the size and the shape of cations and anions on the entropy and the mechanism of structural distortions is discussed. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация:
The magnetic ground state of CuB2O4 is incommensurate at T = 1.8 K and undergoes a continuous phase transition to a noncollinear commensurate antiferromagnetic state at T* similar to 10 K. Close to T* higher-order magnetic satellites are observed. Coexistence of long- and short-range magnetic order is observed in both magnetic phases. This suggests that the association of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and anisotropy leads to the formation of a magnetic soliton lattice.

Powders and single-crystal plates of different sections of an (NH4)(2)KGaF6 crystal are investigated using polarized light microscopy and x-ray
diffraction
over a wide temperature range, including the phase transition temperatures. It is established that the sequence of symmetry changes in the crystal under investigation is as follows: O-h(5)-Fm3m (Z = 4) ↔ C-4h(5)-I114/m (Z = 2) ↔ C-2h(5)-P112(1)/n (Z = 2). (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация:
The heat capacity, nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and x-ray
diffraction
of (Cs1-xRbx)(2)ZnI4 single crystals have been measured, for x = 0, 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.025 and 0.05. The normal to incommensurate (N-Inc) phase transition at T-I, the incommensurate to commensurate (Inc-C) lock-in transition at T-L and the structural commensurate monoclinic to triclinic transition at T-LT, observed in the parent compound (x = 0), takes place for x = 0, 0.001, 0.005 and 0.01. For x = 0.025 only T-I and T-L are detected, while for x = 0.05 no transitions were observable. The values of T-I and T-L increase with x while T-LT decreases and disappears at the concentration x = 0.025. The effect of defects, besides modifying the transition temperatures, is that of broadening and lowering the heat capacity anomaly at the lock-in transition until its total quenching for x = 0.05. No observable hysteresis is detected in this transition. NQR and x-ray
diffraction
data show the Inc-C transition up to the highest concentration. We conclude that this phenomenology is caused by weak interaction of the incommensurate modulation with point defects even in the region close to the Inc-C transition.

We have investigated the magnetic ground state in CuB2O4, copper metaborate, by means of neutron
diffraction
and muSR measurements. At T-N = 21 K CuB2O4 undergoes a second-order phase transition from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic commensurate state followed by a second transition at T* = 10 K where the two magnetic sublattices form a soliton lattice, as reported earlier. We give a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in the commensurate phase which is found to be different from the one published recently. New experimental results are presented which show the existence of a third transition below T approximate to 1.8 K. The magnetic structure remains incommensurate at very low temperatures, but a re-distribution of the magnetic intensities is observed in the neutron
diffraction
data set which suggests that the phases between the Cu2+ spins are changed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация:
The heat capacity C-p(T) of the complex perovskite PbFe1/2Ta1/2O3 has been studied using adiabatic calorimetry in the temperature range 150-370 K. Three diffuse anomalies in C-p(T) are found to exist at temperatures T-d approximate to 350 K, T-m approximate to 250-300 K, and T-c approximate to 205 K. The anomalous and the lattice contribution to the heat capacity are separated, and the change in the entropy is determined. The results of the study are discussed jointly with the data on the structure and physical properties of the compound. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".
