Аннотация: The Raman spectra of four crystals of TbFe3–xGax(BO3)4 solid solutions (x from 0 to 0.54) were studied in the temperature range from 8 to 350 K. The temperatures of structural phase transitions were determined. The observed spectral behavior is characteristic to condensation and restoration of soft modes. Soft modes are associated with a structural phase transition from the R32 phase to the P3121 phase. The Compositions-Temperature phase diagram was constructed.

Аннотация: GdFe3(BO3)4, single crystals were grown from melt-solutions based on bismuth trimolybdate and lithium tungstate. Single crystals of gadolinium ferroborate from lithium-tungstate solution-melt were grown for the first time. The magnetic properties of the grown crystals are compared. It is shown that the GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate obtained using bismuth solution-melt trimolybdate contains impurities of Bi3+ ions (6% at.), which replace Gd3+ ions. Whereas GdFe3(BO3)4, ferroborate grown from a solution-melt based on lithium tungstate does not seem to contain such uncontrolled impurities.

Аннотация: The polarized optical absorption spectra in the region of a series of the f–f transitions of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4, Nd0.5Gd0.5Fe3(BO3)4, and NdFe3(BO3)4 crystals at 90 K have been compared. The spectral features related to the difference in the local environment of Nd3+ ions in these crystals have been established. In the region of the transition 4I9/2 → 4G5/2 + 2G7/2 of Nd3+ ions in the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal, the appearance of some absorption lines at the structural transition R32 → P3121 around ~200 K due to the local symmetry variation has been found. The intensity of these lines smoothly increases with a decrease in temperature from the transition point. The temperature dependence of the lattice parameters of the Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 crystal has been measured. It has been found that, at the transition temperature, the lattice parameter a changes stepwise, which is indicative of the occurrence of a first-order phase transition. The lattice parameter c changes smoothly.

Аннотация: We report comprehensive Raman scattering measurements on a single crystal of binary ferroborate Nd0.75Dy0.25Fe3(BO3)4 in the temperature range of 7–295 K with 532 nm (18797 cm–1) laser excitation. The performed analysis of the polarized Raman spectra revealed the bands assigned to phonon, magnetic, and electronic excitations. The temperature evolution of these quasiparticle excitations has allowed us to ascertain the intricate coupling and interplay between lattice, magnetic, and electronic degrees of freedom. Analysis of the measured Raman spectra made it possible to identify all A1 and Е phonon modes of predicted by the group-theoretical analysis. The splitting energies between the LO and TO components of the polar E phonons were determined. Below the magnetic ordering temperature of the Fe sublattice, TN, we have revealed a multiple peaked two-magnon excitation. Analyzing the temperature evolution of low-frequency modes in the spectra, we also identi-fied modes that are associated with electronic transitions between the crystal field levels of the Nd3+ ions with ground-state 4I9/2 and of the Dy3+ ions with ground-state 6H15/2 multiplets. In addition to the already known temperatures of magnetic transitions, analysis of the temperature behavior of low-frequency phonon and electronic excitations made it possible to establish a temperature T * = 100 K, presumably associated with local distortions of the crystal lattice. The presence of this temperature is confirmed by our ultrasonic study. A group of intense bands observed in the frequency range of 1700–2200 cm–1 has been associated with the mixed low-lying electronic Raman transitions 4I9/2→4I11/2 and the high-energy luminescence ones 4G5/2+2G7/2→4I9/2 for the Nd3+ ion.Представлено результати раманівських досліджень монокристала бінарного фероборату Nd0,75Dy0,25Fe3(BO3)4 при лазерному збудженні 532 нм (18797 см–1) в діапазоні температур 7–295 K. Аналіз отриманих поляризованих раманівських спектрів виявив смуги, які були віднесені до фононних, магнітних та електронних збуджень. На підставі температурної еволюції смуг встановлено складний зв’язок та взаємодію між гратковими, магнітними й електронними ступенями свободи. Аналіз отриманих спектрів дозволив виявити всі А1 та Е фононні моди, передбачені груповим теоретичним аналізом. Визначено енергії розщеплення між LO і TO компонентами полярних E-фононів. Нижче температури магнітного впорядкування Fe-підгратки, TN, виявлена складна багатопікова смуга, яка віднесена до двомагнонного збудження.Температурна залежність низькочастотних раманівських спектрів виявила моди, пов’язані з електронними переходами між рівнями мультиплетів 4I9/2 основного стану Nd3+ та 6H15/2 основного стану Dy3+, отримані в результаті дії кристалічного поля. Аналіз температурної поведінки низькочастотних фононних та електронних збуджень дозволив встановити аномалію поблизу T * = 100 K, ймовірно, пов’язану з локальними спотвореннями кристалічної гратки. Наявність цієї температури підтверджується ультразвуковими дослідженнями. Група інтенсивних смуг, що спостерігається в раманівському спектрі в діапазоні частот 1700–2200 см–1, пов’язана зі змішаними низько розташованими електронними раманівськими 4I9/2 → 4I11/2 та високоенергетичними люмінесцентними 4G5/2 + 2G7/2→4I9/2 переходами в Nd3+ іоні.

Аннотация: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4 of 5I8 → 5F2 and 5F3 f–f transitions are measured at T = 90 K. The absorption spectra are expanded into Lorentzian components, and the transition intensities are obtained. The Zeeman splitting of some transitions is determined using the MCD and absorption spectra. The MCD spectra and Zeeman splitting are theoretically analyzed in the free-atom |J, ±MJ〉wave function approximation by using the concept of a crystalline quantum number. An inconsistency is revealed when this concept is applied to ions with an integer moment, and a modification of the concept is proposed. Anomalously intense vibronic repetitions of electronic transitions from excited sublevels of the ground multiplet are found.

Аннотация: Absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of HoFe3(BO3)4 and HoAl3(BO3)4 single crystals were measured as a function of temperature in the range of 90–293 K. Based on integrals of f-f absorption and МСD bands, temperature dependences of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity (MOA) of f-f transitions were obtained for the first time. It was revealed that MOA of the same f-f transitions in the studied crystals were substantially different and their temperature dependences did not follow the Curie-Weiss law in contrast to the properties of allowed transitions. The observed phenomena were accounted for as a consequence of the nature of f-f transitions allowance. In temperature dependences of the MOA of two transitions the singularities were revealed, which indicated to some local structural distortions in the corresponding excited states.

Аннотация: Polarized absorption spectra of ferroborates HoFe3(BO3)4, NdFe3(BO3)4 and Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 were measured at room temperature in spectral range 4000–24500 cm−1 (400–2500 nm). The studied single crystals were grown from solution-melts. Intensities of the f-f transitions were measured and the Judd–Ofelt parameters Ωλ of Ho3+ and Nd3+ ions in the studied crystals were calculated. It was revealed that the crystals content not strongly influences the Judd–Ofelt parameters. The Ω2 parameter for Ho3+ ion is the most sensitive to the crystal content. Linear dichroism of the hypersensitive transitions appeared to be the largest one for both rare earth ions.

Аннотация: Linearly polarized absorption spectra and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of ErFe3(BO3)4 single crystal were measured in the range of 9000–23000 cm−1 at 90 K. The absorption spectra of f-f transitions were decomposed into the Lorentz shape components and intensities of the components were found. MCD spectra permitted us to measure the Zeeman splitting of some transitions and so to determine changes of the Landé factor along the C3 axis of the crystal during these transitions. Optical and magneto-optical properties of f-f transitions in the ErFe3(BO3)4 crystal were compared with those in the ErAl3(BO3)4 crystal. Substantial difference of the properties connected with the difference of the Er3+ ions local symmetry in two crystals was revealed. Large splitting of one of the f-f transitions without magnetic field, which is not possible for the Kramers doublets, was observed. It was explained by appearance of two absorbing centers due to the local decrease of symmetry in the excited state. Appreciable difference of the local vibrations energy in some excited states was revealed.

Аннотация: Raman spectra of a HoFe3(BO3)4 crystal chip has been investigated at simultaneously high temperature and high pressure (up to 7.1 GPa and 560 K). On the basis of Raman analysis, the assignment to one of the two possible crystal phases has been made. The experimental p–T phase diagram of HoFe3(BO3)4 was established. An increase in the pressure leads to an increase in the temperature of transition. The phase boundary equation was obtained. Neither triple points nor a phase with new symmetry was revealed in the phase diagram. A critical point with the temperature T = 560 K and the pressure p = 2.53 GPa was found. The nanocrystals with different shapes began to grow on crystal surface after reaching that point. The composition of new nanocrystals is identical to the composition of initial crystal.

Аннотация: Raman spectra changes in multiferroic Ho1–xNdxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and Sm1–yLayFe3(BO3)4 (y = 0, 0.75) single crystals at low temperatures have been analyzed. The anomalies corresponding to the phase transition of the second order have been detected at the temperatures of magnetic phase transitions, being consistent with previously reported results of the magnetization study. A number of anomalies in the temperature dependences of the spectral lines associated with the occurrence of magnetic order. A mode corresponding to two-magnon scattering was revealed. Comparison of the features of low-temperature low-frequency spectra of solid solutions Ho-Nd and Sm-La has been carried out.

Аннотация: The magnetic structure of the mixed rare-earth system PrxY1-xFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0.75, 0.67, 0.55, 0.45, 0.25) was studied via magnetic and resonance measurements. These data evidence the successive spin reorientation from the easy-axis antiferromagnetic structure formed in PrFe3(BO3)4 to the easy-plane one of YFe3(BO3)4 associated with the weakening of the magnetic anisotropy of the Pr subsystem due to its diamagnetic dilution by nonmagnetic Y. This reorientation occurs through the formation of an inclined magnetic structure, as was confirmed by our previous neutron research in the range of x = 0.67 ? 0.45. In the compounds with x = 0.75 and 0.67 whose magnetic structure is close to the easy-axis one, a two-step spin reorientation takes place in the magnetic field H||c. Such a peculiarity is explained by the formation of an interjacent inclined magnetic structure with magnetic moments of Fe ions located closer to the basal plane than in the initial state, with these intermediate states remaining stable in some ranges of the magnetic field. An approach based on a crystal field model for the Pr3+ ion and the molecular-field approximation is used to describe the magnetic characteristics of the system PrxY1-xFe3(BO3)4. With the parameters of the d-d and f-d exchange interactions, of the magnetic anisotropy of the iron subsystem and of the crystal field parameters of praseodymium thus determined, it is possible to achieve a good agreement between the experimental and calculated temperature and field dependences of the magnetization curves (up to 90 kOe) and magnetic susceptibilities (2-300 K). © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals were synthesized using the flux method. The crystal nucleation procedure and flux parameters are reported. Conditions for growing the Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.75) single crystals are described. The prepared crystals were studied by Raman spectroscopy in the temperature range of T = 10-300 K. The spectral region corresponding to temperatures of T = 10-55 K, which involves the temperatures of the magnetic phase transition TN = 32 K for x = 0 and TN = 31 K for x = 0.75, was thoroughly analyzed. Anomalies related to the magnetic ordering established in both compounds were found. The main changes occur in the low-wavenumber region (up to 100 cm-1), where the mode corresponding to magnon scattering arises. This mode is shown to have the internal structure indicative of the occurrence of unstable vibrations (40-80 cm-1). The results obtained are analyzed by calculating the empirical lattice dynamics in Sm1-xLaxFe3(BO3)4 with x = 0 and x = 1. © 2016 American Chemical Society.
