Аннотация: A method for synthesis of carbon nanostructures in a high-frequency arc discharge in the flow of helium (3–4 L/min) is presented. It is shown that the plasma-chemical synthesis of fullerenes and endohedral metal fullerenes (EMFs) can be controlled by changing helium pressure in the chamber. Temperature and electron concentration along the line normal to the discharge axis decrease upon moving away from the axis to the periphery; the larger the pressure, the sharper is the decrease in these parameters. The optimal helium pressure of 98 kPa was found in obtaining the Gd@C82 EMF which corresponds to the maximal EMF yield of 5 wt %. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Qualitative analysis of the products of plasmochemical synthesis of fullerenes with metallic nickel and cobalt has been carried out using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron microscopy. Аннотация: The atomic and electronic structure of some endo-, exo-, and endo-exohedral complexes of the fullerene C-60 with various guest atoms and molecules (He-n, H-2, and Li-2) are investigated using semiempirical and nonempirical quantum-chemical methods. The atomic core dynamics is studied by the method of molecular dynamics. It is shown that guest atoms and molecules in fullerene polyhedra acquire an orbital angular momentum due to the correlated motion of nuclei above the low-energy barriers of the potential surface within the carbon polyhedron even at low temperatures (from 4 to 78 K). The emergence of orbital angular momenta of nuclei of guest atoms and molecules is attributed to a change in the contribution of the orbital angular momentum of electrons to the potential surface of the complexes. The motion of Li ions in a polyhedron leads to blurring of the top of the valence band and to the emergence of a charge polarization wave in the carbon polyhedron. Аннотация: The mechanisms of inelastic scattering of low-energy protons with a kinetic energy of 2-7 eV by C6H6, C6F12, C-60, and C60F48 molecules are studied using the methods of quantum chemistry and nonempirical molecular dynamics. It is shown that, for the C6H6 + proton and C-60 + proton systems, starting from a distance of 6 angstrom from the carbon skeleton, the electronic charge transfer from the aromatic molecule to H+ occurs with a probability close to unity and transforms the H+ ion into a hydrogen atom and the neutral C6H6 and C-60 molecules into cation radicals. The mechanism of interaction of low-energy protons with C6F12 and C60F48 molecules has a substantially different character and can be considered qualitatively as the interaction between a neutral molecule and a point charge. The Coulomb perturbation of the system arising from the interaction of the noncompensated proton charge with the Mulliken charges of fluorine atoms results in an inversion of the energies of the electronic states localized, on the one hand, on the positively charged hydrogen ion and, on the other hand, on the C6F12 and C60F48 molecules. As a result, the neutral molecule + proton state becomes the ground state. In turn, this inversion makes the electronic charge transfer energetically unfavorable. Quantum-chemical and molecular-dynamics calculations on different levels of theory showed that, for fluorine derivatives of some aromatic structures (C6F12, C60F48), the barriers to proton penetration through carbon hexagons are two to four times lower than for the corresponding parent systems (C6H6, C-60). This effect is explained by the absence of active pi-electrons in the case of fluorinated molecules.

Аннотация: The nickel particles with the mean size about 10-20 nm coated with carbon were extracted by the treatment of the carbon condensate with nitric and hydrochloric acids. The initial carbon condensate containing nickel nanoparticles with a graphite conversion was synthesized in the high-frequency carbon-helium arc plasma at ambient pressure with the nickel nanoparticles as a catalyst. The nickel content in the nanoparticles was 84.6 wt %. Magnetic properties of the nanoparticles are characterized by the high hysteresis and thermal stability. The sample of compacted nanoparticles is characterized by electrical resistance much higher than it in of compacted initial condensate.

Аннотация: The results of the effect of helium pressure in the chamber on the amount and composition of the produced fullerenes (C60, C70, etc.) synthesized in the arc plasma with graphite electrodes are presented. The findings obtained when the arc is powered by a direct (DC) and alternating (AC) currents of low frequency were compared in the same chamber with the electrodes located at the same angle to each other. These two methods are drastically different. The complete conversion of graphite into fullerene soot in AC occurs, but a part of the graphite is converted into a cathode deposit that does not contain fullerenes in DC, the relative amount of which increases when decreasing the helium pressure in the chamber. The highest fullerene content in fullerene soot of 10.2 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 127.5 kPa in AC arc, but in DC arc, the highest content of fullerenes in fullerene soot of 8.3 wt.% is produced at a pressure of 33.3 kPa.

Аннотация: The article presents the high-frequency arc discharge setup operating in helium atmosphere and applicable for the syntheses of carbon condensate with different dispersion and structure, along with fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes. It also highlights how the change of helium pressure in chamber can control the amount and composition of products in carbon condensate. The setup can be applied for the purposes of analysis, for instance in order to obtain information about the process of fullerenes and endohedral met-allofullerenes formation. Also, the fact that the yield of higher fullerenes is increasing with the pressure rise, whereas the yield of endohedral metallofullerenes is decreasing suggests different formation mechanisms. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Аннотация: Thermodynamic estimates are presented for the formation of spheroidal and flat carbon clusters from reactant species of different charges. Charge is shown to strongly influence the geometry and stability of flat clusters. Changes in the charge of flat clusters can promote both their folding to spheroidal structures and their dissociation. It is concluded that the fluctuations of electron concentration in carbon plasmas can result in the accumulation of fullerene clusters and the dissociation of flat clusters. Аннотация: A fullerene mixture was enriched with endohedral metallofullerenes (EMF) using Lewis acid (TiCl4), which took 22 min, whereas the standard method requires about 8 h. An algorithm for assessing small-area chromatographic peaks has been proposed, which has improved the accuracy of determination. For example, the area of the C84 peak was 4.24% using the developed program, while the use of chromatograph software estimated the area of this peak to be 1.78%.

Аннотация: This paper describes the technique for rapid determination of endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) content in a fullerene mixture (FM). The methods of mass spectroscopy and atom emission element analysis underlay at the technique. By the method of mass spectroscopy, the type of EMF with atom-guest is registered and by the method of emission spectroscopy, the quantity of that element which is contained in the FM is determined. The technique may be used for rapid determination of EMF weight percents in the FM in the specific case if only one type of EMF is present, and of EMF average content if there are different types of EMF are present. The technique is demonstrated through the example of analysis of FM with Y, which was extracted from the carbon condensate (CC) by different solvents (C5H5N and CS2).

Аннотация: In the present work, the polymerization of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) with gadolinium (Gd@C82) and yttrium atoms (Y@C82) at high pressures achieved using the shear diamond anvil cell technique is studied using both theoretical and experimental approaches. It is found that in contrast to pure fullerenes, EMF polymerization starts at lower pressures with similar behavior for both metals inside the fullerene cage. EMF polymerization occurs smoothly and finally leads to a significant increase in the number of interfullerene bonds at pressures higher than ∼20 GPa. Finally, a high bulk modulus of both EMF-polymerized materials is obtained using Raman spectra.

Аннотация: The paper presents results of fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes extracts studies, isolated from the graphite rods carbon soot spray, and containing Y2O3 in a high frequency arc discharge. Two ways of extraction were applied and compared–(1) the classic method of Soxhlet extraction, and (2) the one developed by our team–extraction based on mechanical action combined with filtration. To implement the method, we used a laboratory version of installation, embodying technical solutions for rapid extraction. Chromatographic and mass spectrometry studies of fullerene extracts obtained by these methods revealed that by combining mechanical action with simultaneous filtration, we can significantly intensify and reduce the process of extracting fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes compared to the Soxhlet extraction method. This is especially evident in the release of endohedral metallofullerenes. Our method allows to reduce the release time of fullerenes from 10 g of carbon soot on laboratory installation up to 15 minutes, against the Soxhlet extraction method taking 18 hours. Whilst, the total number of fullerenes extracted by both methods almost coincides (the extraction method using mechanical action allowed us to extract 0.2-0.4 wt. % more), the composition of the isolated fullerene mixtures is different. The relative content of higher fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes exceeds when the mechanical action-based extraction method applied. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
