Аннотация: The electric polarization in a zero magnetic field and in a magnetic field of 12 kOe is measured in a GdxMn1 – xSe solid solution in the percolation concentration region in the temperature range 80–380 K. For composition x = 0.15, the polarization hysteresis and the dependence of the remanent polarization on magnetic field and temperature are determined. The hysteresis is explained in the model of migration polarization and the magnetoelectric effect is explained in the Maxwell–Wagner model.

Аннотация: The ϵ-Fe2O3 iron oxide polymorph is a well-known magnetic material with a complex magnetic structure, which undergoes a series of magnetic transitions in different temperature ranges. However, the ϵ-Fe2O3 phase diagram is still unclear. We report on the magnetic properties of a sample consisting of ϵ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm embedded in a SiO2 xerogel matrix without an admixture of foreign phases. Along with the features typical of the well-known ϵ-Fe2O3 magnetic transition in the temperature range 80–150 K, the temperature dependence of magnetization M(T) of ϵ-Fe2O3 includes other low-temperature anomalies. In an external field of H = 70 kOe, there is a noticeable temperature hysteresis of magnetization at 50–90 K, and near T ≈ 50 K, the M(T) curves have a characteristic bending, which may be indicative of an additional magnetic transition. The ferromagnetic resonance spectra shows that, near 500 K, a magnetic phase transition occurs, which was previously thought to be a transition to the paramagnetic state. An analysis of the temperature dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance spectra shows that the magnetically ordered phase in ϵ-Fe2O3 exists up to about 800 K.

Аннотация: The origin of the low magnetization anisotropy of the textured bulk samples consisting of highly anisotropic (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi-2223) high-temperature superconductor crystallites has been investigated. It has been established that the observed anisotropy is determined by the disordering of Bi-2223 crystallites in the sample. The measured anisotropy of the textured sample makes it possible to determine the magnetic angle characterizing the ordering of crystallites.

Аннотация: An approach to describing the R(H) magnetoresistance hysteresis in granular high-temperature superconductors and behavior of the R(T) resistive transition in these objects in an external magnetic field is proposed. The dissipation is attributed to the subsystem of intergrain boundaries, which form a Josephson junction network. The approach is based on accounting for the effect of magnetic moments of superconducting grains on the resulting (effective) field in the intergrain medium. The described procedure includes (i) establishing of the degree of magnetic flux crowding in the intergrain medium by comparing the experimental data on the R(H) magnetoresistance hysteresis and magnetization M(H), (ii) determining the effective field Beff in the intergrain medium as a function of external field H and temperature T with regard to the thermomagnetic prehistory, and (iii) fitting the experimental R(H) and R(T) dependences using the Arrhenius expression R ∼ exp(–EJ/ kB T), where EJ is the parameter corresponding to the Josephson coupling energy. The fundamental novelty of the proposed approach is the extraction of the functional dependences of EJ on the effective field Beff in the intergrain medium rather than on the external field H, as was made in many previous works. It is shown that the proposed approach makes it possible to adequately describe both the R(H) hysteretic dependences and R(T) dependences of the Y-Ba-Cu-O high-temperature superconductor samples with different morphologies and critical current densities.

Аннотация: The temperature evolution of the magnetoresistance hysteresis in the granular YBa2Cu3O7-δ high-temperature (TC ≈ 92 K) superconductor has been investigated. The measurements have been performed in the high-temperature region (78–90 K) and at the liquid helium temperature (4.2 K). The results obtained have been analyzed using the developed model of the behavior of transport properties of a granular high-temperature superconductor in an external magnetic field. Within the discussed model, the dissipation of the grain boundary subsystem is determined by the intergrain spacing-averaged effective field Beff, which is a superposition of external field H and the field induced by the magnetic moments of superconducting grains. Such a consideration yields the expression Beff(H) = H − 4πM(H) α for the effective field in the intergrain medium, where M(H) is the experimental hysteretic dependence of magnetization and α is the parameter of magnetic flux crowding in the intergrain medium. Here, the magnetoresistance is assumed to be proportional to the absolute value of the effective field: R(H) ~ |Beff(H)|. Analysis of the experimental R(H) and M(H) dependences obtained under the same conditions for the investigated high-temperature superconductor sample showed that in the high-temperature region this parameter is α ≈ 25. At the low temperature (4.2 K), we may state that the degree of flux crowding increases and the estimated α value is ~ 50. The estimates made are indicative of the strong effect of flux compression in the intergrain medium on the magnetotransport properties of the investigated granular high-temperature superconductor system. Possible reasons for a discrepancy between the developed model concepts and experimentally observed low-temperature R(H) hysteresis are analyzed.

Аннотация: The paper presents the results of experimental measurements of constitutive and electrophysical properties in hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene with gadolinium sample. We extracted endohedral metallofullerene from carbon condensate, synthesized in high-frequency arc discharge plasma. Later hydroxyl groups were added. Via methods of infrared and x-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, it was established that the molecules of hydroxylated endohedral metallofullerene have the Gd@C82Ox(OH)y, x + y=(40–42) composition. The method of measuring the electrical impedance in the frequency range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz shows that the resulting hydroxylated fullerene is an ion conductor. The measured frequency dependences of the dielectric permittivity and conductivity of hydroxylated fullerene are explained based on the assumption of an inhomogeneous distribution of electric charges in the material volume. Dielectric-hysteresis loops in the frequency range of 25 Hz–1 MHz and temperature range of 80–300 K, and volt-ampere characteristics were measured. The obtained results imply the appearance of residual polarization induced by the electric field in hydroxylated fullerene. However, the constant dipole moment is absent. © 2019

Аннотация: The Nd1Bi2Fe5O12/Nd2Bi1Fe4Ga1O12 polycrystalline films on the glass substrate and the Nd0.5Bi2.5Fe5O12 epitaxial films on the single-crystal gadolinium gallium garnet substrate have been investigated by impedance and dielectric spectroscopy. The inductive contribution to the impedance and two relaxation channels related to ferroelectric domains and migration polarization have been established. The magnetocapacitance and magnetoimpedance have been determined. The conductive and polarization currents and the phase difference between them for the films of two types have been determined. The critical temperatures of the polarization disappearance and hysteresis I–V have been found. A model of the polarization caused by the piezoelectric effect and flexoelectric interaction has been proposed. I–V hysteresis is explained by the presence of ferroelectric domains near the interface and is associated with the hysteresis of the electric polarization.

Аннотация: Using minor hysteresis loops in the Stoner-Wohlfarth model allows describing the experimental behavior of the coercive force of minor hysteresis loops in ferrihydrite nanoparticles with a change in the field amplitude. The description allows estimating the parameters of the distribution of the magnetic anisotropy field in nanoparticles. The best agreement of the anisotropy fields estimated by different approaches is achieved for the assumption of uniaxial anisotropy in ferrihydrite nanoparticles.

Аннотация: Granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) exhibit magnetotransport properties, including the clockwise magnetoresistance hysteresis. The hysteresis is explained by the concept of an effective field in the subsystem of grain boundaries, where the observed dissipation occurs. The effective field in the intergrain medium is determined by a superposition of the external field H and the field induced by the magnetic response of HTS grains. The magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium provides an increase of the effective field. The magnetoresistance hysteresis of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ has a bright feature: In a fairly wide external field range, the hysteresis width ΔH(H) is found to be almost linear, ΔH ≈ H. This behavior is considered to be universal over the entire temperature range corresponding to the superconducting state (the investigations have been carried out at temperatures of 77 K and 4.2 K). The analysis of the magnetoresistive and magnetic properties has shown that the upper boundary of the field range of the ΔH ≈ H regime is consistent with the field of complete penetration into HTS grains. This is indicative of the strong interrelation between the magnetotransport and magnetic properties of granular HTSs.

Аннотация: A model for describing the magnetoresistance behavior in a granular high-temperature superconductor (HTS) that has been developed in the last decade explains a fairly extraordinary form of the hysteretic R(H) dependences at T = const and their hysteretic features, including the local maximum, the negative magnetoresistance region, and the local minimum. In the framework of this model, the effective field Beff in the intergrain medium has been considered, which represents a superposition of the external field and the field induced by the magnetic moments of HTS grains. This field can be written in the form Beff(H) = H + 4παM(H), where M(H) is the experimental field dependence of the magnetization and α is the parameter of crowding of the magnetic induction lines in the intergrain medium. Therefore, the magnetoresistance is a function of not simply an external field, but also the “internal” effective field R(H) = f(Beff(H)). The magnetoresistance of the granular YBa2Cu3O7 – δ HTS has been investigated in a wide temperature range. The experimental hysteretic R(H) dependences obtained in the high -temperature range (77–90 K) are well explained using the developed model and the parameter α is 20–25. However, at a temperature of 4.2 K, no local extrema are observed, although the expression for Beff(H) predicts them and the parameter α somewhat increases (~30–35) at this temperature. An additional factor that must be taken into account in this model can be the redistribution of the microscopic current trajectories, which also affects the dissipation in the intergrain medium. At low temperatures under the strong magnetic flux compression (α ~ 30–35), the microscopic trajectories of the current Im can change and tunneling through the neighboring grain is preferred, but the angle between Im and Beff will be noticeably smaller than 90°, although the external (and effective) field direction is perpendicular to the macroscopic current direction.

Аннотация: We investigate the domain structure formation and magnetization processes in thin permalloy films with in-plane and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by using micromagnetic simulation. We show that the films of thicknesses less than a critical value Lcr are in the monodomain state, and their magnetization processes are specified by the in-plane anisotropy. Above the critical thickness Lcr, the perpendicular anisotropy dominates, leading to the formation of the stripe domain structure that significantly complicates the magnetization reversal. The values of the critical thickness, parameters of the domain structure, and the saturation field obtained from the micromagnetic simulations are compared with the corresponding values calculated using analytical expressions derived by Murayama in the framework of the domain structures theory.

Аннотация: The cross-breeding problem of the temperature dependence of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility of ferrihydrite nanoparticles is considered. Iron ions Fe3+ in ferrihydrite are ordered antiferromagnetically; however, the existence of defects on the surface and in the bulk of nanoparticles induces a noncompensated magnetic moment that leads to a typical superparamagnetic behavior of ensemble of the nanoparticles with a characteristic blocking temperature. In an unblocked state, magnetization curves of such objects are described as a superposition of the Langevin function and the linear-in-field contribution of the antiferromagnetic “core” of the nanoparticles. According to many studies of the magnetization curves performed on ferrihydrite (and related ferritin) nanoparticles in fields to 60 kOe, dependence χAF(T) decreases as temperature increases, which was related before to the superantiferromagnetism effect. As the magnetic field range increases to 250 kOe, the values of χAF obtained from an analysis of the magnetization curves become lower in magnitude; however, the character of the temperature evolution of χAF is changed: now, dependence χAF(T) is an increasing function. The latter is typical for a system of AF particles with random orientation of the crystallographic axes. To correctly determine the antiferromagnetic susceptibility of AF nanoparticles (at least, ferrihydrite) and to search for effects related to the superantiferromagnetism effect, it is necessary to use in experiments the range of magnetic field significantly higher than that the standard value 60 kOe used in most experiments. The study of the temperature evolution of the magnetization curves shows that the observed crossover is due to the existence of small magnetic moments in the samples.

Аннотация: The magnetic microstructure of Co-Ni binary alloy nanowires electrodeposited with controlled composition into nanoporous aluminum oxide templates can be represented as an ensemble of stochastic magnetic domains, whose size is determined by the magnetic correlation length. Using a method based on the approaching of magnetization to saturation, we defined the dimension of regions with magnetic orientation coherency as the stochastic domain size. Based on the experimental measurements of magnetization curves near saturation and first order reversal curves (FORC), we described a relationship between the macroscopic and microscopic parameters of the nanowires depending on the crystal structure observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in terms of the random anisotropy model. The alloy composition strongly determines the crystal structure, in particular, the grain size and hcp/fcc phase distribution, and influences the effective magnetic anisotropy energy providing the direction of easy magnetization in the nanowire arrays. The characterization of Co-Ni arrays by FORC method at room and low temperatures revealed the transformation of magnetic behavior and certain contributions to the energy of the effective magnetic anisotropy.

Аннотация: Granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) are characterized by the hysteretic behavior of magnetoresistance. This phenomenon is attributed to the effective field in the intergrain medium of a granular HTS. At the grain boundaries, which are, in fact, weak Josephson couplings, the dissipation is observed. The effective field in the intergrain medium is a superposition of the external field and the field induced by magnetic moments of HTS grains. Meanwhile, analysis of the field width of the R(H) magnetoresistance hysteresis ΔH = Hdec − Hinc at Hdec = const, where Hinc and Hdec are increasing and decreasing branches of the R(H) hysteretic dependence, shows that the effective field in the intergrain medium exceeds by far both the external field and the field induced by magnetic moments of HTS grains. This situation suggests the magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium because of the small length of grain boundaries, which amounts to ∼1 nm, i.e., is comparable with the coherence length and corresponds to Josephson tunneling in HTS materials. In this work, using the previously developed approach, we examine experimental data on the magnetoresistance and magnetization hysteresis in the granular YBa2Cu3O7 HTS compound in the range from 77 K to the critical temperature. According to the results obtained, the degree of magnetic flux compression determined by the parameter α in the expression for the effective field Beff(H) = H − 4π M(H) α in the intergrain medium remains constant over the investigated temperature range. All the features of the observed evolution of the R(H) hysteretic dependences are explained well within the proposed approach when the expression for Beff(H) contains the experimental M(H) magnetization data and the parameter α of about 20–25. The latter is indicative of the dominant effect of magnetic flux compression in the intergrain medium on the transport properties of granular HTS materials.

Аннотация: Dissipation in granular high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) during the passage of macroscopic transport current j is mainly determined by carrier tunneling through intergrain boundaries (Josephson junctions). In the presence of external magnetic field H, it is necessary to take into account the significant magnetic flux compression, which can lead to the situation when the effective field Beff in the intergrain boundaries exceeds the external field by an order of magnitude. This is observed as a wide hysteresis of the field dependence of magnetoresistance R(H). In this study, we investigate the R(H) hysteresis evolution in granular 1-2-3 HTSs in different j-H orientations. The magnetic flux compression significantly affects the magnetoresistance and its hysteresis for both perpendicular (H ⊥ j) and parallel (H ∥ j) orientations. The obtained experimental data on the R(H) hysteresis at the arbitrary angles θ = ∠H, j are explained using the approach developed for describing the magnetoresistance hysteresis in granular HTSs with regard to the magnetic flux compression and the model representations proposed by Daghero et al. [Phys. Rev. B 66(13), 11478 (2002)]. A concept of the effective field in the intergrain medium explains the well-known anisotropy of the magnetotransport properties of granular HTSs.

Аннотация: The dynamic magnetization switching of ferrihydrite nanoparticles has been investigated by a pulsed magnetometer technique in maximum fields H-max of up to 130 kOe with pulse lengths of 4, 8, and 16 ms. Ferrihydrite exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering and defects cause the uncompensated magnetic moment in nanoparticles; therefore, the behavior typical of magnetic nanoparticles is observed. The dynamic hysteresis loops measured under the above-mentioned conditions show that the use of pulsed fields significantly broadens the temperature region of existence of the magnetic hysteresis and the coercivity can be governed by varying the maximum field and pulse length. This behavior is resulted from the relaxation effects typical of conventional ferro- and ferrimagnetic nanoparticles and the features typical of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles.

Аннотация: The effects of a fluorine-containing compound (4,4′-difluorobenzophenone; DF) on the electro-optical and dielectric properties of polymer-stabilized blue phase (PSBP) liquid crystals were investigated. When a PSBP cell was driven by an in-plane electric field, the addition of DF up to 2.7 wt% effectively reduced the operation voltage by ~ 30%. Further inspection by dielectric spectroscopy indicated that the ionic concentration in PSBP decreased with increasing loading of DF. This finding can be ascribed to the complexation of impurity ions near the ketone group and carbon–fluorine bonds of the DF compound that restrained the ion transport after photopolymerization. As a result, the DF compound can be regarded as a superior ion-suppressor, enabling the reduction in the ionic effect and, in turn, the promotion of the electro-optical response of a PSBP.
