Аннотация: We present first study of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Ho3+ ion in C4v local symmetry, which it has in fluorite Na0.4Ho0.6F2.2. Optical absorption and MCD spectra were studied in this single crystal in the region of 5I8> 5F3, 5F2, 3K8 and 5G5 transitions in the temperature range 3.6–––90 K. It was revealed, that number of transitions observed in the MCD and absorption spectra coincides with the number of transitions only from the doublet E state to singlet excited states. The E-E type transitions are not active in MCD, but they are not observed in the absorption spectra either. Paramagnetic magneto-optical activities (MOA) of the absorption bands and their temperature dependences were measured and interpreted with the help of the theory based on the nature of f-f transitions allowance. The MCD spectra were also analyzed in approximation of the J,±MJ wave functions of the free atom. It was shown in particular, that the lowest initial state of the transitions observed at T ˃ 10 K had MJ = 7, but this is not the lowest state of the holmium ion in the crystal. A little lower there is a quasi-doublet with MJ = 8 and, accordingly, with a higher magneto-optical activity of transitions from it. However, the intensity of transitions from this state is low.

Аннотация: The effect of cation nonstoichiometry and variable-valence samarium ions on the thermoelectric and structural characteristics of manganese sulfide is studed. Nonstoichiometry leads to a change in the thermopower sign in the antiferromagnetic region in a magnetic field and a decrease in the thermopower in the paramagnetic region. It is shown that the thermopower and Nernst–Ettingshausen coefficient of samarium-substituted manganese sulfide change their signs in the vicinity of structural and electronic transitions established from the thermal expansion coefficient. A decrease in the sound attenuation in a magnetic field is found. A correlation between the temperatures of the change of the sign of the Nernst–Ettingshausen effect and the change in electrosound in a magnetic field is established and explained within the model of carrier diffusion in the phase transition region. The conductivity control by the ultrasound is demonstrated.

Аннотация: The distribution of Co2+ ions over sublattices and structurally nonequivalent positions in the unit cell of the crystal lattice of a single crystal of lithium gallium spinel Li0.5Ga2.5O4 is shown. This distribution determines the properties of both mono- and nanocrystalline substances. The distribution is obtained by a special technology and is manifested in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. The distribution of Co2+ ions depends on the structural and magnetic nonequivalence. The structural and magnetic nonequivalence causes a multiminimum behavior of the crystal field potential in the unit cells of single crystals at the locations of Co2+ ions. The Co2+ ions are found in complexes with tetrahedral and octahedral oxygen ions. Three types of EPR spectra of Co2+ ions have been found and investigated. The Cotetr2+ spectrum is attributed to the Co2+ ion, which replaces the Ga3+ ion located in a tetrahedral oxygen environment. The spectrum of the Cooct2+ ion located in the crystal field with axial symmetry belongs to the Co2+ ion replacing the Li+ ion located in an octahedral oxygen environment. The spectrum of the Cooct2+ ion located in a low symmetry crystal field belongs to the Co2+ ion replacing the Ga3+ ion located in an octahedral oxygen environment. The nearest cationic environment of the ion creates rhombic distortions due to the different valence numbers of Li+ and Ga3+. The results of studying the angular dependences of the spectra show the presence of four and twelve magnetically nonequivalent positions in the unit cells.

Аннотация: In the present work, we synthesized the Cu-doped CoFe2O4 (Co1-xCuxFe2O4) nanoparticles with x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, by employing the citrate precursor method. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the pure cubic structure formation with the Fd-3m space group. To know the structural purity of each sample as well as the distribution of cations, Rietveld refinement was carried out. The crystallite size increases from 39.55 nm to 41.80 nm upto x = 0.2 and with further doping of Cu2+ ions it decreases to 36.27 nm. Similar variation is observed in the lattice parameter where the value of ‘a’ first increases from 8.378 Å to 8.381 Å and then decreases to 8.377 Å. The development of a non-uniform grain is seen using scanning electron microscope (SEM), which reveals the reduction in grain size. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the two peaks ν1 and ν2 for all the samples around 541 cm−1 and 408 cm−1, respectively, which further decreases to 532.5 cm−1 and 402.5 cm−1 as the dopant ion concentration increases. The Stiffness constant, and Elastic modulus decrease with doping whereas, the Poisson’s ratio and Pugh’s ratio show a constant value of around 0.249 and 1.660, respectively. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) analysis shows a decrease in saturation magnetization (σs) value from 76.85 emu/g to 43.62 emu/g. The net magnetic moment (nB) decreases from 3.29 μB to 1.85 μB and the effective anisotropy constant value decreases from 10.672erg/g to 4.461erg/g. Thus, the prepared nanoparticles provide a way forward for their industrial applications.

Аннотация: The content of transition-metal ions and their valence state for three compositions of NixCuyMn3−x−yBO5 are estimated by the methods of X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In all the three compositions, the copper content does not exceed 0.25. One of the compositions has manganese ions both in the trivalent and bivalent states according to the K-edge position. The calculations of the total energies of various cation-ordered structures using the software package Wien2K show that copper ions predominately occupy one site, namely, 2(2d). The measurements of the magnetic properties show two types of magnetic transitions in all the three compositions, with one of them being in the range of 60–75 K and the other one at 10 K. Based on the exchange interactions calculated in the framework of the empirical model, magnetic ordering temperatures are estimated for two- and three-sublattice structures and the magnetic transition in the range of 60–75 K is supposed to be connected with magnetic moment ordering in sites 2 and 3.

Аннотация: The content of metal ions and their valence state for three NixCuyMn3–x–yBO5 compositions were estimated by EXAFS and XANES spectroscopy methods. In all three compositions, the copper y content did not exceed 0.25; in the third composition, some manganese ions entered the compound not only in the trivalent, but also in the divalent state. A detailed study of the magnetic properties showed that two magnetic transitions are observed in all compositions: one in the region of 60–75 K, and the second in the region of 10 K. Based on the exchange interactions calculated within the framework of the empirical model, the magnetic ordering temperatures for two- and three-lattice magnets were determined and it was assumed that the magnetic transition in the region of 60–75 K is associated with the ordering of magnetic moments in positions 2 and 3.

Аннотация: Iron borates NdFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3 (BO3)4 activated with 1% erbium, with ahuntite structure (space symmetry group R32) were investigated by the method of erbium spectroscopic probe. From an analysis of the temperature dependence of the transmission spectra in the region of the 4I15/2 → 4113/2 transition in the Er3+ ion, it was found that both studied compounds order antiferromagnetically at TN ≈ 33 K into an easy-plane magnetic structure. No other phase transitions were found.

Аннотация: This work presents information on the growth and spectroscopic study of single crystals of copper metaborate doped with nickel Cu1–xNixB2O4 (x = 0.05, 0.1). In the absorption spectra of both crystals, satellites related to Cu centers distorted by impurity Ni atoms were observed near the lines of zero phonon transitions. Polarization studies in the isotropic ab-plane of the tetragonal crystal Cu1–xNixB2O4 show the presence of linear magnetic dichroism in the magnetically ordered state, which was previously observed both in manganese-doped and undoped copper metaborates CuB2O4. The temperature of magnetic phase transitions into the collinear antiferromagnetic and into helicoidal structures, TN = 19.1 K and T * = 8.6 K, respectively, were determined from the temperature dependence of the dichroic signal.
