MAGNETIZATION
Аннотация: We report upon the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60–350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (TC ∼ 92 K), CP(T)/T possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of CP/T = f(T) is observed in the temperature range of 95–160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The magnetocaloric effect [i.e., the adiabatic temperature change, ΔTad (T,H)] is assessed through a direct measurement or an indirect method using the CP(T,H) data. Owing to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, an anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) or the rotating MCE [ΔTadrot (T)] is observed in Cu2MnBO5. A deep minimum in the ΔTadrot (T) near the TC is observed and ascribed to the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility.

Аннотация: The results of magnetization measurements in low and ultralow (0|H|10 Oe) magnetic fields are presented for single-crystal Cu2MnBO5 ludwigite. An own SQUID magnetometer and AC measurement system and vibrating sample magnetometer options of PPMS were used. Magnetic properties have been investigated at different cooling modes of the sample. The features of the magnetic moment behaviour are revealed. The dissimilarity of magnetic measurement data obtained using various types of magnetometers is observed. The reasons for this are discussed.

Аннотация: Crystallization of heterovalent double (Mn,Ni)3BO5 and triple (Mn,Ni,Cu)3BO5 oxyborates with the ludwigite structure is studied in fluxes based on Bi2Mo3O12 diluted with Na2CO3 or Li2CO3 carbonates. Single crystals of five (Mn,Ni)3BO5 and three (Mn,Ni,Cu)3BO5 compounds with different cation ratios are obtained. The ion concentration is determined from the analysis of the lattice parameters by powder and single crystal XRD. The comparative analysis of the polarized Raman spectra of double and triple ludwigites is presented. The actual high nickel and small copper concentrations in the crystals are discussed. The hierarchy of chemical bonds in the fluxes used in addition to the approach involving stabilization of the manganese valence state using solvent components is estimated.

Аннотация: Needle-shape single crystals of Mn2.25Co0.75BO5 ludwigite were synthesized by the flux technique and investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, static magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Magnetization and specific heat experiments showed the presence of ferrimagnetic ordering near TN≃61K. Below this temperature the magnetic properties demonstrated the angular dependence and the high magnetic hardness in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the crystallographic c axis, which is similar to other cobalt-containing ludwigites. The effective magnetic moment per magnetic ion 4.8μB was calculated from the paramagnetic data. Analysis of the phonon contribution to the specific heat allowed to distinguish the magnetic contribution CM, which has two features. One of which was observed at TN and can be attributed to strong exchange interactions between spins of magnetic ions. The second one at T = 11.6 K is due to the effect of the ligands crystal field on a magnetic ion with S›1/2.

Аннотация: +We present an extensive study of the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of high-quality monocrystals of two heterometallic oxyborates from the ludwigite family: Cu2GaBO5 and Cu2AlBO5 in the temperature range above 2 K. The distinctive feature of the investigated structures is the selective distribution of Cu and Ga/Al cations. The unit cell of Cu2GaBO5 and Cu2AlBO5 contains four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions. Two sites in the structure of Cu2GaBO5 are fully occupied by Cu atoms which form the quasi one-dimensional chains along the a-axis. For Cu2AlBO5 all sites are partially occupied by Al and Cu atoms. The joint analysis of low-temperature data on magnetic susceptibility and magnetic contribution to the specific heat showed that Cu2AlBO5 and Cu2GaBO5 exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=2.4 and 4.1 K, respectively. The magnetic response below TN can be represented as the sum of two contributions: the ordered component and the paramagnetic contribution from defects of the same relative weight. It is shown that the external magnetic field above 2.5 T and 2.8 T for Cu2GaBO5 and Cu2AlBO5, respectively, leads to a broadening of the magnetic phase transition indicating suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetic order.

Аннотация: A comparative analysis of the copper and iron ions bonds exchange energies was conducted for various variants of orderings and distributions of iron ions among crystallographic positions in ludwigite Cu2FeBO5. Analysis showed that the exchange bonds of iron ions play a key role in the formation of magnetic order. The magnetic ordering strongly depends on the distribution of iron ions among the positions. In the case when the Fe3+ is in the same position as in Fe3BO5, the most favorable magnetic structure is similar to the magnetic structure of ludwigite Fe3BO5. In other cases, the type of magnetic ordering is different.

Аннотация: Crystals of ludwigite Ni2.14Mn0.86BO5 were synthesized by flux growth technique. We show in the paper that it contains Mn3+ and Mn4+. A possible mechanism of the manganese valence states stabilization has been proposed. The structural and magnetic characterization of the synthesized samples has been carried out in detail. The cations composition and Mn valence states of the crystal were determined using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS technique. The comparative analysis was carried out between the studied crystal and Ni2MnBO5 synthesized previously. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out. The magnetic transition in the studied composition occurs at the 100 K that is higher than in Ni2MnBO5 although the studied composition is more disordered. The calculations of the exchange integrals in the frameworks of indirect coupling model revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions. The several magnetic subsystems existence hypothesis was supposed. The possible magnetic structure was suggested from the energies estimation for different ordering variants.

Аннотация: Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetostriction of the Cu2MnBO5 single crystal have been studied. The EPR spectrum consists of a single Lorentzian line due to the exchange-coupled system of spins of Cu2+ and Mn3+ ions. It has been established experimentally that the g-factor in the paramagnetic region is strongly anisotropic and anomalously small, which is not typical of the exchange-coupled system of spins of Cu2+ and Mn3+ ions. At a temperature of 150 K, the g-factors along the crystallographic a, b, and c axes are 2.04, 1.96, and 1.87, respectively. Such small effective g-factor values can be due to the effect of the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction between the spins of Cu2+ and Mn3+ ions directed along the a axis. The presence of two Cu2+ and Mn3+ Jahn-Teller ions occupying four nonequivalent positions in the crystal is responsible for the absence of the inversion center. It is found that the behavior of the magnetostriction of Cu2MnBO5 is not typical of transition-metal crystals but is closer to the behavior of crystals containing rare-earth ions.

Аннотация: The ludwigite Ni5Sn(BO5)2 belongs to a family of oxyborates, and has an ordered distribution of nonmagnetic Sn ions. This material is studied here using magnetic measurements. Ni5Sn(BO5)2 does not show full long-range magnetic order, but exhibits a partial ordering at 73 K. A theoretical group analysis is performed and different models of the magnetic structure of Ni5Sn(BO5)2 are discussed.

Аннотация: The effects related to the conversion of magnetic structures of a Cu2MnBO5 ferrimagnet to a Cu2GaBO5 antiferromagnet under the Mn3+ → Ga3+ substitution were studied. The properties of four single crystal samples with the gallium concentration x  = 0.04, 0.11, 0.17, 0.25 were examined. The chemical composition and valence state of the samples were determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy element-sensitive technique. Distribution of the 3d metal ions over crystallographic positions was studied using the first principle calculations by Wien2k program. The evolution of the magnetic properties was investigated by the measurements of the temperature and field dependences of magnetization, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility. In agreement with the previous study of the structure evolution of Cu2Mn1-xGaxBO5 solid solutions, the critical concentration upon a change in the magnetic ordering type was found in the range x  = 0.17–0.25. The non-monotonic behavior of magnetization in terms of the gallium content was found in the concentration range of 0.04–0.17. A complex pattern of magnetic phase transitions belonging to the concentration phase boundary was obtained in the compounds with gallium being within the range x  = 0.17–0.25. One could observe the splitting of the peaks of the real part of ac-susceptibility of the high-temperature phase transition in the Cu2MnBO5-like phase (x = 0.04, 0.11) and that of the low-temperature one at the concentration boundary (x = 0.17, 0.25) with different frequency and orientational dependence. The type and origin of the multiple phase transitions observed in the studied samples were analyzed.

Аннотация: Copper oxyborate single crystals with a ludwigite structure, Cu2MBO5 (M = Cr, Fe, Mn), containing different substitutes in the trivalent subsystem have been grown from Bi2O3–MoO3–Na2O–B2O3 fluxes. The structural properties of grown compounds have been compared in detail using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy methods. In addition, these methods have been used to determine the degree of cationic ordering in these ludwigites. The temperature and field dependences of the Cu2MBO5 (M = Cr, Fe, Mn) ludwigite magnetization are presented.

Аннотация: Single crystals of Mn1.32Ni0.85Cu0.83BO5 with the ludwigite structure were obtained by the solution-melt method during spontaneous crystallization. The concentration of copper, manganese and nickel ions was determined by transmission microscopy. Manganese ions are included in compounds in the divalent and trivalent states. The study of temperature and field dependences showed that we have several magnetic transitions. The first transition, associated with the ferrimagnetic ordering of the magnetic moments of parts of the ions, observed in the region of 50 K. In the region of 25 K, a second magnetic transition is observed. Substitution of nickel ions for copper and divalent manganese of better disorder and competition of exchange interactions, which leads to the division of the magnetic system into several magnetic subsystems that are ordered at different temperatures.

Аннотация: The energies of various magnetically ordered structures for ludwigite Ni2MnBO5 have been calculated in the framework of the first-principles approach using the Wien2K program package, with the parameters of exchange interactions being determined. Two subsystems can be distinguished in the magnetic system, which are associated with the triads 4-2-4 and 3-1-3. The magnetic moments of the ions in both triads are antiferromagnetically oriented. The analysis of the exchange contribution to the energy shows that there occurs an increase of the magnetic cell relative to the crystallographic one due to antiferromagnetic ordering of the magnetic moments along the c axis in three-legged ladders formed by 4-2-4 triads. However, in three-legged ladders formed by 3-1-3 triads, the magnetic moments of the ions are ordered along the c-axis ferromagnetically. The predicted type of magnetic ordering in Ni2MnBO5 is similar to magnetic ordering in Fe3BO5. Non-collinear ordering of the magnetic moments of the subsystems at different temperatures is also likely to be observed in Ni2MnBO5, as is the case in Fe3BO5. Superexchange (indirect) interactions (No-O-B-O-Ni) influence the orientation of the magnetic moments of two 3-1-3 (4-2-4) triads within the unit cell. It is these interactions that may be responsible for the formation of long-range magnetic order in Co3BO5 and ferrimagnetic-antiferromagnetic spin-reorientation transition in Fe3BO5.

Аннотация: A spin-crossover mechanism in ludwigite Со3BO5 is proposed on the basis of the DFT calculation with SCAN potentials. The role of separate exchange interactions in the establishment of the long-range magnetic order is demonstrated within the Monte Carlo method.

Аннотация: Multicomponent flux systems based on both Li2WO4-B2O3-Li2O-CuO-Cr2O3 and Bi2O3-MoO3-B2O3-Na2O-CuO-Cr2O3 were studied in order to grow Cu2CrBO5 crystals. The conditions for Cu2CrBO5 crystallization were investigated by varyingthe component ratios, and the peculiarities of their interaction were characterized by studying the formation sequence of high-temperature crystallizing phases. Special attention was paid to the problem of Cr2O3 solubility. Phase boundaries between CuCrO2, Cu2CrO4, and Cu2CrBO5 were considered. The crystal structure of the obtained samples was studied viasingle crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The chemical composition of the grown crystals was examined using the EDX technique. Anactual ratio of Cu:Cr = 1.89:1.11 was found for Cu2CrBO5 grown from the lithium-tungstate system, which showed a small deviation from 2:1, implying the presence of a part of bivalent Cr2+ in the samples. Anomalies in the thermal dependence of magnetization were analyzed and compared with the previously obtained data for Cu2CrBO5. The anomaly at TC ≈ 42 K and the antiferromagnetic phase transition at TN ≈ 119 K were considered. Polarized Raman spectra of Cu2CrBO5 were obtained for the first time, and a comparative analysis of the obtained data with other monoclinic and orthorhombic ludwigites is presented. Along with the polarized room temperature spectra, the thermal evolution of Raman modes near the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature TN ≈ 119 K is provided. The influence of the magnetic phase transition on the Raman spectra of Cu2CrBO5 is discussed.

Аннотация: Single crystals of cobalt oxyborates Co3O2BO 3 and Co3-xFexO2BO3 were synthesized. The crystal structure and electric properties were investigated. The difference in the electrical resistivity behaviors was found. For parent Co3O2BO3 nor simple activation law, nor Mott variable range hopping (VRH) are acquirable to describe the experimental data in wide temperature region. In contrast for Co3-xFex O 2BO3 Mott's variable-range hopping conductivity clearly dominates.
