Аннотация: The main features of the magnetic, magnetoelastic and record magnetoelectric properties of a HoAl3(BO3)4 alumoborate single crystal have been studied experimentally and theoretically. For magnetic field B||a we have observed a giant polarization ΔPba(Ba) ≈ -5240 μC/m2 induced by field of 9 T at T = 5 K. We have calculated the magnetic characteristics of HoAl3(BO3)4 in the framework of a crystal-field model. The parameters of the crystal-field in HoAl3(BO3)4 have been determined. Good agreement of experimental and calculated magnetization curves Mc,˄c(B) and temperature dependences of magnetization Mc,˄c(T) was achieved. The field and temperature dependences of the multipole moments have been calculated for interpretation of magnetostriction in HoAl3(BO3)4. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.Экспериментально и теоретически исследованы основные особенности магнитных и рекордных магнитоэлектрических свойств монокристалла алюмобората HoAl3(BO3)4. Обнаружена гигантская электрическая поляризация DPba(Ba) — –5240 мкКл/м2, индуцированная магнитным полем 9 Тл при Т = 5 К. Измеренные магнитные свойства и обнаруженные особенности проинтерпретированы в рамках единого теоретического подхода, который базируется на приближении молекулярного поля и расчетах в модели кристаллического поля для редкоземельного иона. Описаны экспериментальные температурные от 3 до 300 К и полевые до 9 Тл зависимости намагниченности. При интерпретации экспериментальных данных определены параметры кристаллического поля тригональной симметрии для иона Ho3+ в HoAl3(BO3)4.

Аннотация: The thermodynamic properties of alumoborate TmAl3(BO3)4 single crystal are studied experimentally and theoretically. A theoretical analysis based on the crystal field model makes it possible to interpret all measured parameters. The crystal field parameters are determined. The temperature (3–300 K) and field (up to 9 T) dependences of magnetization are described. The field and temperature dependences of multipole moments of the Tm3+ ion in TmAl3(BO3)4 make it possible to describe magnetostriction and low-temperature anomalies in thermal expansion.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Аннотация: Results of a complex investigation of the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and magnetoelastic properties of a SmFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal are presented. Samarium iron borate is similar to another easy-plane iron borate, NdFe3(BO3)(4), in that it possesses a large value of the magnetic-field-induced polarization (about 500 mu C/m(2)), the sign of which changes when the field direction is changed between axes a and b of the crystal. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the field dependence of polarization and magnetostriction of the two compounds are significantly different, which is explained by the weak effect of external magnetic field on the ground-state multiplet of samarium ion, which is characterized by an extremely small value of its g-factor.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties, the magnetostriction, and the magnetoelectric effect in the d-electron free rare-earth aluminum borate TmAl3(BO3)(4) are investigated between room temperature and 2 K. The magnetic susceptibility reveals a strong anisotropy with the hexagonal c axis as the hard magnetic axis. Magnetostriction measurements show a large effect of an in-plane field reducing both the a-axis and c-axis lattice parameters. The magnetoelectric polarization change in a and c directions reaches up to 300 mu C/ m(2) at 70 kOe with the field applied along the a axis. The magnetoelectric polarization is proportional to the lattice contraction in magnetic field. The results of this investigation prove the existence of a significant coupling between the rare-earth magnetic moment and the lattice in RAl3(BO3)(4) compounds (R=rare earth). They further show that the rare-earth moment itself will generate a large magnetoelectric effect which makes it easier to study and to understand the origin of the magnetoelectric interaction in this class of materials.

Аннотация: We have studied the thermodynamic properties of single-crystalline TbFe3(BO3)(4). Magnetization measurements have been carried out as a function of magnetic field (up to 50 T) and temperature up to 350 K with the magnetic field both parallel and perpendicular to the trigonal c axis of the crystal. The specific heat has been measured in the temperature range 2-300 K with a magnetic field up to 9 T applied parallel to the c axis. The data indicate a structural phase transition at 192 K and antiferromagnetic spin ordering at T-N approximate to 40 K. A Schottky anomaly is present in the specific-heat data around 20 K, arising due to two low-lying energy levels of the Tb3+ ions being split by f-d coupling. Below T-N, magnetic fields parallel to the c axis drive a spin-flop phase transition, which is associated with a large magnetization jump. The highly anisotropic character of the magnetic susceptibility is ascribed mainly to the Ising-like behavior of the Tb3+ ions in the trigonal crystal field. We describe our results in the framework of a unified approach which is based on mean-field approximation and crystal-field calculations.

Аннотация: The ground state of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with S = 1/2 interacting with acoustic phonons in a magnetic field was studied by the quantum Monte Carlo method in the nonadiabatic approximation. Oscillations of the amplitude of the root-mean-square displacement of ions and the average phonon occupation number in a magnetic field were found. Local maxima were revealed in the distribution functions of site magnetic moments and ion displacements. Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the longitudinal magnetostriction of a CuGeO3 single crystal is measured within the temperature range 4.2-20 K in a magnetic field of 10 T. As the temperature is raised above 4.2 K, the magnetostriction at first increases from vanishingly small values, attains a maximum at a temperature of approximately 12 K, and then abruptly drops as the temperature approaches the spin-Peierls transition. Аннотация: The field dependences of the longitudinal and transversal magnetostriction of the copper metaborate CuB2O4 were measured at various temperatures below the Neel point in magnetic fields directed along the tetragonal axis or in the basal plane. Magnetostriction was found to exhibit jumps at magnetic-field-induced phase transitions to a commensurate weak ferromagnetic state, as well as to grow smoothly in fields above and below the critical level. The magnetostriction observed in a magnetic field directed along the tetragonal axis is shown to be primarily caused by volume dilatation of the crystal. The experimental data obtained were used to construct the magnetic phase diagram of copper metaborate magnetized along the tetragonal axis.

Аннотация: The magnetostriction of CuGcO(3) single crystals has been measured in the temperature range from 5 to 16 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Giant values of the magnetostrictive strains along the b-axis is observed near the phase transition from the dimerized phase to the high field magnetic phase. The field induced magnetostriction in the antiferromagnetic phase is considerably smaller than in the dimerized phase.

Аннотация: The magnetostriction of FexMn1-xS (x = 0.27) single crystals in strong magnetic fields up to 120 kOe has been investigated. It has been found that the magnetostriction reaches colossal values (+/-3 x 10(-4)) atypical of compounds of 3d elements. It has been found that the magnetostriction changes sign when varying temperature and magnetic field; this behavior indicates an important role of the spin-phonon interactions in the formation of the magnetic order in solid solutions of iron-manganese sulfides.

Аннотация: Magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of ferroborate single crystals with complex composition (Tb1 - x Er (x) Fe-3(BO3)(4), x = 0, 0.75) and with competing exchange Tb-Fe and Er-Fe interactions are investigated. Jumps in electric polarization, magnetostriction, and magnetization are observed as a result of spin-flop transitions, as well as a considerable decrease in the critical field upon an increase in the Er concentration, in a field H (c) parallel to the c axis. The observed behavior of phase-transition fields is analyzed and explained using a simple model taking into account anisotropy in g factors and exchange splitting of funda-mental doublets of the easy-axis Tb3+ ion and easy-plane Er3+ ion. It is established that magnetoelectric and magnetostriction anomalies under spin-flop transitions are mainly controlled by the Tb subsystem. The Tb subsystem makes a nonmonotonic contribution Delta P (a) (H (a) , T) to polarization along the a axis: the value of Delta P (a) reverses its sign and increases with temperature due to the contribution from the excited states of the Tb3+ ion.
