Аннотация: A many-electron model of the energy band structure of VBO3 and of Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions is proposed with strong electron correlations taken into account. Experimental optical absorption spectra and data on the resistivity are discussed in the framework of the suggested model. Variation in the magnetic and electronic properties of VBO3 and Fe1 - xVxBO3 under high pressure is predicted. For VBO3, a Mott-Hubbard (insulator-metal) transition is expected in the high-pressure phase. In Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions, a nontrivial variation in the properties is predicted, leading to the appearance of a different magnetic state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The Mossbauer effect in the Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions has been measured at 130 and 300 K. The Fe0.05V0.95BO3 composition was studied in the interval 4.2-300 K. The experimental data obtained are described in terms of the model of a dilute magnetic insulator in which atoms of the first coordination sphere provide a major contribution to the hyperfine field at iron nucleus sites. It was found that, at low temperatures, the field H-hf is generated primarily by the iron ion itself and depends only weakly on substitution. The hyperfine interaction parameters in the discrete configuration series 6Fe, 5Fe1V, 4Fe2V, 3Fe3V, and 2Fe4V were determined. The magnitude of the isomer shift suggests that iron in the crystal resides in the trivalent state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Magnetic properties of GdFe3(BO3)(4) single crystals were investigated by Fe-57-Mossbauer spectroscopy and static magnetic measurements. In the ground state, the GdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal is an easy-axis compensated antiferromagnet, but the easy axis of iron moments does not coincide with the crystal C-3 axis, deviating from it by about 20 degrees. The spontaneous and field-induced spin reorientation effects were observed and studied in detail. The specific directions of iron magnetic moments were determined for different temperatures and applied fields. Large values of the angle between the Fe3+ magnetic moments and the C-3 axis in the easy-axis phase and between Fe3+ moments and the a(2) axis in the easy-plane phase reveal the tilted antiferromagnetic structure. Аннотация: Single crystals of Fe1.91V0.09BO4 were prepared by spontaneous crystallization using a solution melt technology for the first time and its structure, electronic and magnetic properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetization and electrical measurements. Room-temperature Mossbauer measurements indicate that "localized" (Fe2+, Fe3+) and "delocalized" (Fe2.5+) states in ratio 0.31:0.345:0.345 distributed over two crystallographically non-equivalent positions exist. The results of magnetic measurements show that warwickite is a P-type ferrimagnet below T = 130 K. Resistivity measurements show a variable-range-hopping when electron-electron interactions cause a soft Coulomb gap in the density of states at the Fermi energy. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Аннотация: We present the results of an in-plane resistivity study of the solid solutions Fe1-xVxBO3. The measurements were made on single crystals with concentration x = 0.02, 0.13, 0.18, 0.3, 0.95, 1.0 in the temperature range 220-600 K. Semiconducting behaviour for samples with x = 0.13 was found. Mott variable-range-hopping transport rho(T) = rho(0)exp(T*/T)(alpha) has been observed with alpha = 1/4 at T 290 K, suggesting carrier localization. Above this temperature the activation-type conductivity, with activation energies, E-a, about 1 eV for all samples, is observed. The possible electronic states and band structure of Fe1-xVx BO3 crystals are discussed in the different pressure ranges: P P-c(Fe), p(c)(Fe) p p(c)(V) P P-c(V) where p(c)(Fe) P-c(V) are the critical pressure values for FeBO3 and VBO3, respectively.

Аннотация: The thiospinels of composition FeCr2S4 and Fe1+xCr2-2xSnxS4 with 0 x 0.1 have been examined by means of extended x- ray absorption fine structure, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetoresistance techniques. The structural characterization shows that tin enters the spinel- related lattice as Sn4+ and occupies the octahedral B site. Appreciable magnetoresistance is observed in the temperature range 160 - 185 K which includes the magnetic ordering temperature. The effect of slight non- stoichiometry in FeCr2S4 and of tin doping is observed in the M r ossbauer spectra which show the Fe2+ ions to occupy the tetrahedral A sites. The M r ossbauer spectra recorded around the magnetic ordering temperature are sensitive to small ( 0.03 T) applied magnetic fields. The influence of tin on the low temperature magnetic behaviour is associated with the distribution of Cr3+, Sn4+ and Fe3+ ions around tetrahedral Fe2+ sites and vacancies in the anionic sublattice. An interpretation of the colossal magnetoresistance phenomena below TN is suggested.

Аннотация: Evolution of the phase state of paramagnetic additions at various stages of synthesis and subsequent thermal treatment of glasses of the system Al(2)O(3)-K(2)O-B(2)O(3) simultaneously doped with Fe(2)O(3) and MnO is studied by means of a combination of experimental techniques: Faraday rotation (FR), electron magnetic resonance (EMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Both FR and EMR show that magnetically ordered clusters occur already at the first stage of the glass preparation. In particular, for the ratio of the Fe and Mn oxides in the charge close to 3:2, fine magnetic nanoparticles are formed with characteristics similar to those of manganese ferrite. By computer simulating the EMR spectra at variable temperatures, a superparamagnetic nature of these nanoparticles is confirmed and their mean diameter is estimated as approximately 3.2 nm. In the thermally treated glasses larger magnetic nanoparticles are formed, giving rise to FR spectra, characteristic of magnetically ordered systems, and the EMR spectra different from those in as-prepared glasses but also showing superparamagnetic narrowing. The Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborates the manganese ferrite structure of the nanoparticles and indicates their coexistence in the ferrimagnetic and superparamagnetic states. The TEM shows the presence of polydisperse nanoparticles on the background of the glass matrix, and electron diffraction of a selected region containing larger particles indicates a crystal structure close to that of MnFe(2)O(4). Energy-dispersive atomic x-ray spectra confirm that the major part of Fe and Mn introduced to the glass composition is gathered in the particles, with the concentration ratio close to 2:1, characteristic of bulk MnFe(2)O(4). Magnetic hysteresis loops of samples subjected to an additional thermal treatment demonstrate a strong increase in the coercive force, remnant magnetization, and high-field magnetic susceptibility with temperature decrease. The consistent results obtained using various techniques demonstrate that the formation of nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of MnFe(2)O(4) confers to these glasses magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of substances possessing magnetic order.

Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of investigations into the structure and the magnetic and magnetooptical properties of thin films Mn (x) Fe3 - x O-4 prepared by solid-state reactions: isothermal annealing, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis, and a combination of these two regimes. The regimes favorable for the formation of films close in composition and structure to the stoichiometric compounds MnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 are established. The features observed in the spectral response of the magneto-optical Faraday effect and of the magnetic circular dichroism of the MnFe2O4 films are considered in terms of the electronic transitions in magnetic ions, primarily Fe3+, which occupy octahedral positions in the spinel structure.

Аннотация: The magnetostriction of FexMn1-xS (x = 0.27) single crystals in strong magnetic fields up to 120 kOe has been investigated. It has been found that the magnetostriction reaches colossal values (+/-3 x 10(-4)) atypical of compounds of 3d elements. It has been found that the magnetostriction changes sign when varying temperature and magnetic field; this behavior indicates an important role of the spin-phonon interactions in the formation of the magnetic order in solid solutions of iron-manganese sulfides.
