Аннотация: We report on bifurcations effect mediated by the electron-phonon coupling in a concentrated rare-earth-containing antiferromagnet, observed in the spectra of coupled 4f-electron-phonon modes under the influence of an external magnetic field. The effect was observed in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of a multiferroic easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext||c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the base of the equation derived in the frame of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8cm−1.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Neutron diffraction -- Crystal structure -- Multiferroics -- Magnetic structure -- Manganites
Аннотация: Structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of DyMnO3 were investigated by neutron diffraction in order to study the peculiarities of 3d-4f interactions in this compound. Precise magnetic order and its detailed temperature evolution were determined using single crystal neutron diffraction. Elliptical cycloid on manganese subsystem below TCh = 19 K was confirmed, with temperature decrease the elipticity of the Mn magnetic structure reduces significantly, creating almost circular cycloid. Temperature evolution of the magnetic structure demonstrate specific hysteretic behavior. The results show a complex interplay between transition metal and rare earth magnetic sublattices leading to so-called “Mn- controlled” and “Dy- controlled” magnetic states. The strong and complicate 3d-4f interaction leads to the unusual very slow magnetic structure relaxation.

Аннотация: Magnetic structure of the substituted multiferroics-ferroborates Nd0.9Tb0.1Fe3(BO3)4 and Nd0.8Tb0.2Fe3(BO3)4 were determined in the framework of a self-consistent refinement of the single crystal neutron diffraction data. The small substitution of Nd for Tb leads to the reorientation of the main antiferromagnetic vector L from the basal plane towards the hexagonal axis. The reorientation takes place via an angular structure for which L does not coincide with the principal crystallographic directions and evolves with temperature due to competing magnetic anisotropies of Fe, Nd, and Tb subsystems. Our refinement at 2 K reveals the existence of distortions in the collinear antiferromagnetic Fe spin arrangement suggested before in other ferroborates. Therefore, besides the main antiferromagnetic vector L, the magnetic structure involves additional fine symmetrized combinations of spin components allowed by symmetry. They coexist with certain L components and could originate from the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya Fe-Fe exchange interactions. At higher temperatures, the magnetic structure is described by the simple collinear model, where the L vector is deviated from the hexagonal plane. © 2019 American Physical Society.

Аннотация: Far-infrared reflection and ellipsometry measurements on multiferroic PrFe3(BO3)4 and SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals were used to investigate the interaction between lattice phonons and electronic excitations associated with 4f crystal-field transitions. A temperature-dependent interference between two types of excitations was observed in PrFe3(BO3)4 in which the frequency of 4f crystal-field electronic excitation of Pr3+ falls into the TO-LO frequency interval of the optical phonon mode near 50 cm−1 (1.5 THz). Experimental data were explained on the basis of a theoretical model of coupled electron-phonon modes. The fitting procedure revealed the value 14.8 cm−1 for the electron-phonon coupling constant. This rather large value points to an essential role played by the electron-phonon interaction in the physics of multiferroics.

Аннотация: The optical spectra of oriented SmFe3(BO3)4 single crystals are studied in the region of the f-f transitions in the Sm3+ ion by Fourier spectroscopy. The energies, the symmetry properties, and the exchange splittings of the Stark sublevels of the ground and 17 excited multiplets of the Sm3+ ion in a crystal field of symmetry D 3 are determined from the measured temperature dependences of polarized-radiation absorption spectra. The parameters of the crystal field acting on samarium ions and the parameters of the exchange interaction between Sm3+ and Fe3+ ions are found. The anisotropy of the effective exchange interaction is shown to be substantially stronger than the magnetic anisotropy, due to a strong crystal-field-induced mixing of the ground and excited multiplets.

neodymium iron borate -- multiferroic -- crystal structure -- multi-temperature -- single-crystal X-ray diffraction -- Mossbauer spectroscopy -- characteristic temperature
Аннотация: Neodymium iron borate NdFe3(BO3)4 is an intensively studied multiferroic with high electric polarization values controlled by a magnetic field. It is characterized by a large quadratic magnetoelectric effect, rigidity in the base plane and a rather strong piezoelectric effect. In this work, the atomic structure of (Nd0.91Bi0.09)Fe3(BO3)4 was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the temperature range 20–500 K (space group R32, Z = 3). The Bi atoms found in the composition partially substitute the Nd atoms in the 3a position; they entered the structure due to the growth conditions in the presence of Bi2Mo3O12. It was shown that in the temperature range 20–500 K there is no structural phase transition R32→P3121, which occurs in rare-earth iron borates (RE = Eu–Er, Y) with an effective rare-earth cation radius smaller than that of Nd. The temperature dependence of the unit-cell c parameter reveals a slight increase on cooling below 90 K, which is similar to the results obtained previously for iron borates of Gd, Y and Ho. The atomic distances (Nd,Bi)—O, (Nd,Bi)—B, (Nd,Bi)—Fe, Fe—O, Fe—B and Fe—Fe in the iron chains and between chains decrease steadily with decreasing temperature from 500 to 90 K, whereas the B1(3b)—O distance does not change and the average B2(9e)—O distance increases slightly. There is a uniform decrease in the atomic displacement parameters with decreasing temperature, with a more pronounced decrease for the Nd(3a) and O2(9e) atoms. The O2(9e) atoms are characterized by the maximum atomic displacement parameters and the most elongated atomic displacement ellipsoids. The characteristic Debye and Einstein temperatures, and the static component in the atomic displacements were determined for cations using multi-temperature diffraction data. It was shown that the Nd cations have the weakest bonds with the surrounding atoms and the B cations have the strongest.

Dielectric and Raman spectroscopy measurements across structural phase transition in multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4 single crystal / A. Tripathy [et al.] // AIP Conf. Аннотация: We report on findings in the HoFe3(BO3)4 single crystal across structural phase transition by the dielectric and Raman spectroscopic measurements. In most of the compounds of RFe3(BO3)4 (R=La-Lu) family low temperature P3121 structure is introduced through structural phase transition (from space group R32). Temperature dependent dielectric measurements on the HoFe3(BO3)4 crystal depicts a step like feature at the structural phase transition at ?366 K. The Raman spectroscopy study also confirms the structural transition around this temperature. A clear signature of structural transition is reflected in the Raman spectra, mainly in the frequency range (200-400 cm-1). Appearance of new Raman modes below the transition temperature also indicates that the transition is from a high symmetry phase to a low symmetry phase.
