Аннотация: Single crystals of a noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic pyroelectric ferrimagnet Ga2 - xFexO3 with a Curie temperature within 260-345 K have been grown by the flux method. It has been found that the electrical properties of the single crystals varied over a broad range from 10(5) to 10(13) Omega cm depending on the presence of transition-metal oxide impurities. The dispersion relations for all three principal dielectric functions of orthorhombic GaFeO3 have been determined in the range 0.7-5.4 eV by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The spectra of the dielectric functions of the orthorhombic Ga2 - xFexO3 crystals are compared with the spectra of the trigonal crystals. The Faraday effect and second-harmonic generation are studied, and the law of the transition to the paramagnetic state has been determined. The crystallographic and magnetic contributions to the second-harmonic generation are analyzed. (C) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: We report high-resolution optical absorption spectra for NdFe3(BO3)(4) trigonal single crystal, which is known to exhibit a giant magnetoelectric effect below the temperature of magnetic ordering T-N=33 K. The analysis of the temperature-dependent polarized spectra reveals the energies and, in some cases, symmetries and exchange splittings of Nd3+ 84 Kramers doublets. We perform crystal-field calculations starting from the exchange-charge model, obtain a set of six real crystal-field parameters, and calculate wave functions and magnetic g factors. In particular, the values g(perpendicular to)=2.385 and g(parallel to)=1.376 were found for the Nd3+ ground-state doublet. We obtain B-loc=7.88 T and parallel to J(FN)parallel to=0.48 K for the values of the local effective magnetic field at liquid-helium temperatures at the Nd3+ site and the Nd-Fe exchange integral, respectively, using the experimentally measured Nd3+ ground-state splitting of 8.8 cm(-1). To check the reliability of our set of crystal-field parameters, we model the magnetic susceptibility data from literature. A dimer containing two nearest-neighbor iron ions in the spiral chain is considered to partly account for quasi-one-dimensional properties of iron borates, and then the mean-field approximation is used. The results of calculations with the exchange parameters for Fe3+ ions J(nn)=-6.25 K (intrachain interactions) and J(nnn)=-1.92 K (interchain interactions) obtained from fitting agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)(4). Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd L-II,L-III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at T-N approximate to 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below T-N, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T approximate to 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at T-SR approximate to 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated similar to 45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

Аннотация: The magnetic, magnetoelectric, and magnetoelastic properties of a PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal and the phase transitions induced in this crystal by the magnetic field are studied both experimentally and theoretically. Unlike the previously investigated ferroborates, this material is characterized by a singlet ground state of the rare-earth ion. It is found that, below T-N = 32 K, the magnetic structure of the crystal in the absence of the magnetic field is uniaxial (I parallel to c), while, in a strong magnetic field H parallel to c (H-cr similar to 43 kOe at T = 4.2 K), a Fe3+ spin reorientation to the basal plane takes place. The reorientation is accompanied by anomalies in magnetization, magnetostriction, and electric polarization. The threshold field values determined in the temperature interval 2-32 K are used to plot an H-T phase diagram. The contribution of the Pr3+ ion ground state to the parameters under study is revealed, and the influence of the praseodymium ion on the magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of praseodymium ferroborate is analyzed.

Аннотация: Results of a complex investigation of the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and magnetoelastic properties of a SmFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal are presented. Samarium iron borate is similar to another easy-plane iron borate, NdFe3(BO3)(4), in that it possesses a large value of the magnetic-field-induced polarization (about 500 mu C/m(2)), the sign of which changes when the field direction is changed between axes a and b of the crystal. However, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the field dependence of polarization and magnetostriction of the two compounds are significantly different, which is explained by the weak effect of external magnetic field on the ground-state multiplet of samarium ion, which is characterized by an extremely small value of its g-factor.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Аннотация: Low-temperature studies of the behavior of the sound velocity and attenuation of acoustic modes have been performed on a single crystal NdFe3(BO3)(4) Transitions of the magnetic subsystem to the antiferromagnetically ordered state at T-N approximate to 30.6 K have been revealed in the temperature behavior of the elastic characteristics. The features in the temperature behavior of elastic characteristics of the neodymium ferroborate and its behavior in the external magnetic field, applied in the basic plane of the crystal, permit us to suppose that the transition to an incommensurate spiral phase is realized in the system. This phase transition behaves as the first order one. H-T phase diagrams for the cases H parallel to a and H parallel to b have been constructed. Аннотация: Resonant and nonresonant x-ray scattering studies on HoFe3(BO3)4 reveal competing magnetic ordering of Ho and Fe moments. Temperature and x-ray polarization dependent measurements employed at the Ho L3 edge directly reveal a spiral spin order of the induced Ho moments in the ab plane propagating along the c axis, a screw-type magnetic structure. At about 22.5 K the Fe spins are observed to rotate within the basal plane inducing spontaneous electric polarization, P. Components of P in the basal plane and along the c axis can be scaled with the separated magnetic x-ray scattering intensities of the Fe and Ho magnetic sublattices, respectively.
