Аннотация: A possibility to greatly enhance frequency-conversion efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering is shown by making use of extraordinary properties of three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward waves. Such processes are commonly attributed to negative-index plasmonic metamaterials. This work demonstrates the possibility to replace such metamaterials that are very challenging to engineer by readily available crystals which support elastic waves with contra-directed phase and group velocities. The main goal of this work was to investigate specific properties of indicated nonlinear optical process in short-pulse regime and to show that it enables elimination of fundamental detrimental effect of fast damping of optical phonons on the process concerned. Among the applications is the possibility of creation of a family of unique photonic devices such as unidirectional Raman amplifiers and femtosecond pulse shapers with greatly improved operational properties.

Аннотация: We present a comparative analysis of transient processes in media with a negative refractive index for the parametric interaction of co- and counter-propagating waves. The transient time for the interaction of counter-propagating waves is shown to considerably exceed that for the interaction of co- propagating waves. In the case of counter-propagating waves, we present fitting results for the generated wave amplitude as a function of time and for the transient time vs. the amplitude of the pump wave and the length of the medium.

Аннотация: Three-wave mixing of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in a pulsed regime is investigated in the metamaterials that enable the coexistence and phase-matching of such waves. It is shown that the opposite direction of phase velocity and energy flux in backward waves gives rise to extraordinary transient processes due to greatly enhanced optical parametric amplification and frequency up- and down-shifting nonlinear reflectivity. The differences are illustrated through comparison with the counterparts in ordinary, co-propagating settings. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: Noncollinear second-harmonic generation from two ultrashort pulses intersecting in a nonlinear medium is studied in spectral and time domains. We derive analytical expressions for the second-harmonic (SH) amplitude in crystals of finite thickness neglecting diffraction. The contribution from characteristics of the fundamental radiation and interaction geometry to the process is analyzed. In addition, refined phase-matching conditions are obtained. We find that the spectral bandwidth is determined by the intersection angle and can be enlarged. The SH pulse duration can be optimized by varying the fundamental beam size and the intersection angle. It is found that the SH beam excited by a Gaussian fundamental beam becomes elliptical. It is shown that the fundamental pulse duration can be readily characterized with single pulses by means of measuring the ellipticity of the SH beam profile. The approach developed can potentially be used to calculate parametric interactions of fundamental pulses with an arbitrary spectrum. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: Structure and optical properties of new nonlinear crystal - Li2Ga2GeS6 single crystal of optical quality, grown by the Bridgman technique were studied. The data on transmission, Raman scattering, luminescence emission, excitation and thermal quenching as well as thermostimulated luminescence are presented. Fundamental absorption edge is determined by the direct allowed electronic transitions: The values of optical band gap are estimated. Absorption band at 8.0 mu m is due to S-S vibrations. Features in photoluminescence spectra are associated with excitons: both free (narrow line at 371 nm) and self-trapped ones (broad bands at 596, 730 and 906 nm). Spontaneous emission in the 80-170 K range, both at crystal heating and cooling, is typical of pyroelectrics: This confirms the absence of symmetry center in Li2Ga2GeS6 and an opportunity of laser frequency nonlinear conversion. Аннотация: Backward electromagnetic waves are extraordinary waves with contra-directed phase velocity and energy flux. Unusual properties of the coherent nonlinear optical coupling of the phase-matched ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves with contra-directed energy fluxes are described that enable greatly-enhanced frequency and propagation direction conversion, parametrical amplification, as well as control of shape of the light pulses. Extraordinary transient processes that emerge in such metamaterials in pulsed regimes are described. The results of the numerical simulation of particular plasmonic metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion are presented, which prove the possibility to match phases of such coupled guided ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves. Particular properties of the outlined processes in the proposed metamaterial are demonstrated through numerical simulations. Potential applications include ultra-miniature amplifiers, frequency changing reflectors, modulators, pulse shapers, and remotely actuated sensors.
