Аннотация: Films from biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate are treated with chemical reagents to improve their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Two approaches are tested: a single treatment with alkali, acids, oxidizing or reducing agents, and a step-by step treatment of the alkali pre-activated surface of polymer films with bromine water and amino-compounds (ammonia or triethylamine). The maximal level of hydrophilicity (the lowest water contact angle and the highest polar component of the surface free energy) is registered after a single treatment with NaOH and after the step-by-step treatment. These samples also showed the best adhesion of mouse fibroblasts of NIH 3T3 line on the film surface. So, the proposed methods can be used to enhance hydropilicity and biocompatibility of biopolymer surface.

Аннотация: Light scattering and transmission by a monolayer polymer dispersed liquid crystal film containing liquid crystal droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring of liquid crystal molecules at the polymer-droplet interface is considered theoretically and experimentally. The developed optical model is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations of the theory of scattering of waves. It is applied to describe the interference quenching effect for the coherently transmitted light and electrically controllable symmetry breaking effect in small-angle structure of light scattered by film containing droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring. The analysis of transmittance and reflectance of the one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of monolayers is carried out. The formation of the photonic band gaps is analyzed.

Аннотация: The wide use of pesticides in agriculture has caused uncontrolled distribution of these chemicals in the environment, calling for the development and investigation of new environmentally friendly formulations, which would reduce human impact on nature. In the present study, the metribuzin (MET), tribenuron-methyl (TBM), and fenoxaprop-P-ethyl (FPE) herbicides were encapsulated in microparticles of degradable microbial polymers – polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) – of two types – poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate [P(3HB/3HV)]. The use of P(3HB) resulted in higher yields of microparticles (63% to 79%) and larger sizes of the particles, whose average diameter was 0.60 ± 0.06–0.75 ± 0.11 μm, while the average diameter of copolymer particles varied between 0.43 ± 0.12 and 0.55 ± 0.05 μm. Encapsulation efficiency was rather determined by the type of herbicide and its solubility, varying from 24.7% to 48.2%. In vitro herbicide release from microparticles to water was affected by herbicide solubility and PHA chemical composition. The readily soluble MET showed the highest release rate, and over 30 days, 64% and 78% of the encapsulated amounts were released from P(3HB) and P(3HB/3HV) microparticles, respectively. High herbicidal activity of microparticles loaded with metribuzin and tribenuron-methyl was demonstrated in the laboratory stands of the Elsholtzia ciliata weed plant.

Аннотация: Polymer-based dielectric capacitors play a notable part in the practical application of energy storage devices. Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets can improve the dielectric properties of polymer-based composites. However, the breakdown strength will greatly reduce with the increase of GO content. Hence, the construction of sandwich structure can enhance the breakdown strength without reducing the dielectric constant. Herein, single-layered and sandwich-structured poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE)) nanocomposites with low content of GO nanosheets (<1.0 wt%) are prepared via employing a straightforward casting method. Compared with the single-layered composites and pure P(VDF-CTFE), the sandwich-structured composites exhibit comprehensively better performance compared. The sandwich-structured composite with 0.4 wt% GO nanosheets show an excellent dielectric constant of 13.6 (at 1 kHz) and an outstanding discharged energy density of 8.25 J cm−3 at 3400 kV cm−1. These results demonstrate that the growth of the dielectric properties is owing to 2D GO nanosheets and the enhancement of breakdown strength due to the sandwich structure. The results from finite element simulation provide theoretical support for the design of high energy density composites.

Аннотация: The study reports results of using a CO2-laser in continuous wave (3 W; 2 m/s) and quasi-pulsed (13.5 W; 1 m/s) modes to treat films prepared by solvent casting technique from four types of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), namely poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and three copolymers of 3-hydroxybutyrate: with 4-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, and 3-hydroxyhexanoate (each second monomer constituting about 30 mol.%). The PHAs differed in their thermal and molecular weight properties and degree of crystallinity. Pristine films differed in porosity, hydrophilicity, and roughness parameters. The two modes of laser treatment altered these parameters and biocompatibility in diverse ways. Films of P(3HB) had water contact angle and surface energy of 92° and 30.8 mN/m, respectively, and average roughness of 144 nm. The water contact angle of copolymer films decreased to 80–56° and surface energy and roughness increased to 41–57 mN/m and 172–290 nm, respectively. Treatment in either mode resulted in different modifications of the films, depending on their composition and irradiation mode. Laser-treated P(3HB) films exhibited a decrease in water contact angle, which was more considerable after the treatment in the quasi-pulsed mode. Roughness parameters were changed by the treatment in both modes. Continuous wave line-by-line irradiation caused formation of sintered grooves on the film surface, which exhibited some change in water contact angle (76–80°) and reduced roughness parameters (to 40–45 mN/m) for most films. Treatment in the quasi-pulsed raster mode resulted in the formation of pits with no pronounced sintered regions on the film surface, a more considerably decreased water contact angle (to 67–76°), and increased roughness of most specimens. Colorimetric assay for assessing cell metabolic activity (MTT) in NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast culture showed that the number of fibroblasts on the films treated in the continuous wave mode was somewhat lower; treatment in quasi-pulsed radiation mode caused an increase in the number of viable cells by a factor of 1.26 to 1.76, depending on PHA composition. This is an important result, offering an opportunity of targeted surface modification of PHA products aimed at preventing or facilitating cell attachment.

Аннотация: Исследован электрооптический отклик пленок капсулированного полимером нематика с коническими граничными условиями. В каплях нематика формируется аксиал-биполярная конфигурация директора. Показано, что изначально ориентация осей симметрии структуры капель хаотичная как в плоскости образца, так и по отношению к нормали к подложкам. Приложенное напряжение U ориентирует биполярные оси капель параллельно электрическому полю, а процесс переориентации является пороговым только в случае исходно ортогональной ориентации биполярной оси и нормали к подложкам. Соответственно, в исходном состоянии образцы интенсивно рассеивают свет, а процесс отклика на электрическое поле имеет беспороговый характер. Исследовались образцы с толщиной пленки 5, 10, 20 и 30 мкм. Для всех исследуемых образцов характерно высокое значение максимального коэффициента пропускания и коэффициента контрастности, которые для пленки толщиной 30 мкм равны 84 % и 5536, соответственно, и достигаются при напряжении U = 12 В. Полученные результаты актуальны для использования в оптоэлектронных устройствах с низким энергопотреблением, которые требуются для развития энергосберегающих технологий в аэрокосмической технике.
The electrooptic response of films of polymer dispersed nematic under conical boundary conditions has been investigated. An axial-bipolar director configuration is formed in nematic droplets. It has been shown that initially, the orientation of droplet’s bipolar axes is chaotic both in the sample plane and relative to the normal to the substrates. The applied voltage U orients the droplet’s bipolar axes parallel to the electric field and the reorientation process is threshold only when the bipolar axis is initially orthogonal to the substrate normal. Accordingly, the samples strongly scatter light in the initial state, and the optical response to an electric field is thresholdless. The samples with a film thickness of 5, 10, 20 and 30 μm have been studied. All the samples under study are characterized by a high transmittance and contrast ratio, which for a 30 μm sample are equal to 84 % and 5536, respectively, and achieved at U = 12 V. The results obtained are relevant for use in low-power optoelectronic devices required for the development of energy-saving technologies in aerospace engineering.

Аннотация: The bacterial strain isolated from soil was identified as Cupriavidus necator IBP/SFU-1 and investigated as a PHA producer. The strain was found to be able to grow and synthesize PHAs under autotrophic conditions and showed a broad organotrophic potential towards different carbon sources: sugars, glycerol, fatty acids, and plant oils. The highest cell concentrations (7–8 g/L) and PHA contents were produced from oleic acid (78%), fructose, glucose, and palm oil (over 80%). The type of the carbon source influenced the PHA chemical composition and properties: when grown on oleic acid, the strain synthesized the P(3HB-co-3HV) copolymer; on plant oils, the P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymer, and on the other substrates, the P(3HB) homopolymer. The type of the carbon source influenced molecular-weight properties of PHAs: P(3HB) synthesized under autotrophic growth conditions, from CO2, had the highest number-average (290 ± 15 kDa) and weight-average (850 ± 25 kDa) molecular weights and the lowest polydispersity (2.9 ± 0.2); polymers synthesized from organic carbon sources showed increased polydispersity and reduced molecular weight. The carbon source was not found to affect the degree of crystallinity and thermal properties of the PHAs. The type of the carbon source determined not only PHA composition and molecular weight but also surface microstructure and porosity of the polymer films. The new strain can be recommended as a promising P(3HB) producer from palm oil, oleic acid, and sugars (fructose and glucose) and as a producer of P(3HB-co-3HV) from oleic acid and P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) from palm oil.

Аннотация: Inverse mode of a novel electrooptical effect caused by the ionic modification of boundary conditions has been studied for liquid crystal droplets. We have considered the droplets of nematic 5CB doped with cationic surfactant cetyl-trimethyl-ammonium-bromide and dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol. In the initial state the surface anchoring was normal on the whole interface due to the high concentration of homeotropic surfactant. Applied voltage results in the purification of a section of the interface from the surface-active cations thereby restoring here a tangential anchoring and stimulating the significant transformation of droplet structure. At that three different types of director field distribution can be realized within the same droplet. The proper textures of the droplet both in the crossed polarizers and without analyzer are considered.
