Аннотация: One of the major challenges in PHA biotechnology is optimization of biotechnological processes of the entire synthesis, mainly by using new inexpensive carbon substrates. A promising substrate for PHA synthesis may be the sugars extracted from the Jerusalem artichoke. In the present study, hydrolysates of Jerusalem artichoke (JA) tubers and vegetative biomass were produced and used as carbon substrate for PHA synthesis. The hydrolysis procedure (the combination of aqueous extraction and acid hydrolysis, process temperature and duration) influenced the content of reducing substances (RS), monosaccharide contents, and the fructose/glucose ratio. All types of hydrolysates tested as substrates for cultivation of three strains—C. necator B-10646 and R. eutropha B 5786 and B 8562—were suitable for PHA synthesis, producing different biomass concentrations and polymer contents. The most productive process, conducted in 12-L fermenters, was achieved on hydrolysates of JA tubers (X = 66.9 g/L, 82% PHA) and vegetative biomass (55.1 g/L and 62% PHA) produced by aqueous extraction of sugars at 80 °C followed by acid hydrolysis at 60 °C, using the most productive strain, C. necator B-10646. The effects of JA hydrolysates on physicochemical properties of PHAs were studied for the first time. P(3HB) specimens synthesized from the JA hydrolysates, regardless of the source (tubers or vegetative biomass), hydrolysis conditions, and PHA producing strain employed, exhibited the 100–120 °C difference between the Tmelt and Tdegr, prevailing of the crystalline phase over the amorphous one (Cx between 69 and 75%), and variations in weight average molecular weight (409–480) kDa. Supplementation of the culture medium of C. necator B-10646 grown on JA hydrolysates with potassium valerate and ε-caprolactone resulted in the synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV) and P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers that had decreased degrees of crystallinity and molecular weights, which influenced the porosity and surface roughness of polymer films prepared from them. The study shows that JA hydrolysates used as carbon source enabled productive synthesis of PHAs, comparable to synthesis from pure sugars. The next step is to scale up PHA synthesis from JA hydrolysates and conduct the feasibility study. The present study contributes to the solution of the critical problem of PHA biotechnology—finding widely available and inexpensive substrates.

Аннотация: Разработан композиционный материал на основе полимера, жидкого кристалла (ЖК) и ионного сурфактанта, характеризующийся оптической мультистабильностью и механической гибкостью. Оптические свойства данного материала варьируются за счет переключения капель холестерического ЖК между различными структурными состояниями, остающимися стабильными после выключения управляющего электрического сигнала. Функциональным инструментом для управления ориентационной структурой капель холестерика внешним электрическим полем является наноразмерный слой ионного сурфактанта. Подобраны параметры электрических сигналов, переключающих капли в новые стабильные состояния, а также возвращающих их в исходную радиальную структуру.A composite material based on polymer, liquid crystal and ionic surfactant is developed, which is characterized by the optical multistability and mechanical flexibility. Optical properties of the material are varied by switching the cholesteric droplets between different structural states remaining stable after breaking the control electrical signal. Functional tool to control the orientational structure of cholesteric droplets by an external electric field is a nanosized layer of ionic surfactant. The parameters of electrical signals switching the droplets in new stable states and returning them in the initial radial structure are chosen.

Аннотация: Orientational structures of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal under homeotropic anchoring and their transformations under the action of an electric field are studied. The switching of cholesteric droplets between different topological states are experimentally and theoretically demonstrated. Structures with λ+1/2-disclination are found and considered. These structures are formed during the transformation of a twisted toroidal configuration induced by a decrease in the electric field when a relative chiral parameter N06.3. The transformation of the initial structure with a bipolar distribution of the helix axis into a twisted toroidal configuration and then into a structure with λ+1/2-disclination is investigated in detail. The behavior of these structures under the influence of an external electric field, as well as the appearance of structures with λ−1/2-disclination, are studied. Obtained results are promising for the development of optical materials with programmable properties.

Аннотация: The effect of laser irradiation on the properties of the surface of films prepared from a bioresorbable polymer poly(hydroxybuturate) has been studied. To determine the spectral region of the polymer optimal for the effective action of radiation on electron molecular bonds, theoretical investigations have been performed, which have shown that, for modifying the surface of PHB scaffolds, it is expedient to use a vacuum laser at a wavelength of 160 nm. Using laser irradiation at a power from 3 to 30 W, a series of films with modified surface, from roughnesses to perforations, have been obtained. The microstructure and properties of the film surface depending on the mode of irradiation have been examined, and conditions have been found under which the contact marginal angles of film wetting with water can be decreased to 50° (compared with 76-80° in starting products). Thus, conditions of laser treatment of PHB scaffolds have been theoretically substantiated and experimentally realized that provide a beneficial effect on the properties of the surface without destroying the structure of the material. © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic liquid crystal (LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic liquid crystal LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.

Аннотация: The study reports results of using a CO2-laser in continuous wave (3 W; 2 m/s) and quasi-pulsed (13.5 W; 1 m/s) modes to treat films prepared by solvent casting technique from four types of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), namely poly-3-hydroxybutyrate and three copolymers of 3-hydroxybutyrate: with 4-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, and 3-hydroxyhexanoate (each second monomer constituting about 30 mol.%). The PHAs differed in their thermal and molecular weight properties and degree of crystallinity. Pristine films differed in porosity, hydrophilicity, and roughness parameters. The two modes of laser treatment altered these parameters and biocompatibility in diverse ways. Films of P(3HB) had water contact angle and surface energy of 92° and 30.8 mN/m, respectively, and average roughness of 144 nm. The water contact angle of copolymer films decreased to 80–56° and surface energy and roughness increased to 41–57 mN/m and 172–290 nm, respectively. Treatment in either mode resulted in different modifications of the films, depending on their composition and irradiation mode. Laser-treated P(3HB) films exhibited a decrease in water contact angle, which was more considerable after the treatment in the quasi-pulsed mode. Roughness parameters were changed by the treatment in both modes. Continuous wave line-by-line irradiation caused formation of sintered grooves on the film surface, which exhibited some change in water contact angle (76–80°) and reduced roughness parameters (to 40–45 mN/m) for most films. Treatment in the quasi-pulsed raster mode resulted in the formation of pits with no pronounced sintered regions on the film surface, a more considerably decreased water contact angle (to 67–76°), and increased roughness of most specimens. Colorimetric assay for assessing cell metabolic activity (MTT) in NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast culture showed that the number of fibroblasts on the films treated in the continuous wave mode was somewhat lower; treatment in quasi-pulsed radiation mode caused an increase in the number of viable cells by a factor of 1.26 to 1.76, depending on PHA composition. This is an important result, offering an opportunity of targeted surface modification of PHA products aimed at preventing or facilitating cell attachment.

Аннотация: The bacterial strain isolated from soil was identified as Cupriavidus necator IBP/SFU-1 and investigated as a PHA producer. The strain was found to be able to grow and synthesize PHAs under autotrophic conditions and showed a broad organotrophic potential towards different carbon sources: sugars, glycerol, fatty acids, and plant oils. The highest cell concentrations (7–8 g/L) and PHA contents were produced from oleic acid (78%), fructose, glucose, and palm oil (over 80%). The type of the carbon source influenced the PHA chemical composition and properties: when grown on oleic acid, the strain synthesized the P(3HB-co-3HV) copolymer; on plant oils, the P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymer, and on the other substrates, the P(3HB) homopolymer. The type of the carbon source influenced molecular-weight properties of PHAs: P(3HB) synthesized under autotrophic growth conditions, from CO2, had the highest number-average (290 ± 15 kDa) and weight-average (850 ± 25 kDa) molecular weights and the lowest polydispersity (2.9 ± 0.2); polymers synthesized from organic carbon sources showed increased polydispersity and reduced molecular weight. The carbon source was not found to affect the degree of crystallinity and thermal properties of the PHAs. The type of the carbon source determined not only PHA composition and molecular weight but also surface microstructure and porosity of the polymer films. The new strain can be recommended as a promising P(3HB) producer from palm oil, oleic acid, and sugars (fructose and glucose) and as a producer of P(3HB-co-3HV) from oleic acid and P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) from palm oil.

Аннотация: Films from biodegradable poly-3-hydroxybutyrate are treated with chemical reagents to improve their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Two approaches are tested: a single treatment with alkali, acids, oxidizing or reducing agents, and a step-by step treatment of the alkali pre-activated surface of polymer films with bromine water and amino-compounds (ammonia or triethylamine). The maximal level of hydrophilicity (the lowest water contact angle and the highest polar component of the surface free energy) is registered after a single treatment with NaOH and after the step-by-step treatment. These samples also showed the best adhesion of mouse fibroblasts of NIH 3T3 line on the film surface. So, the proposed methods can be used to enhance hydropilicity and biocompatibility of biopolymer surface.

Аннотация: This article presents the surface morphology effect of silicon carbide (SiC) particles on the polyurethane binder’s structure formation in a dispersed-filled composite. The difference in the morphology and surface relief of filler particles was ensured by the implementation of plasma chemical modification. As a result of this modification, the filler consisted of core-shell particles characterized by a SiC core and a carbon shell (SiC@C), as well as a carbon shell decorated with silicon nanoparticles (SiC@C/SiNP) or nanos (SiC@C/SiNW). The study of the relaxation properties of polyurethane composites has shown that the strongest limiting effect on the molecular mobility of boundary layer’s chain segments is exerted by a highly developed surface with a complex relief of SiC@C/SiNP and SiC@C/SiNW particles. An empirical method was proposed to find the polymer fractions spent on the formation of the boundary, transition and bulk layers of the polymer matrix in the composite. It was shown that the morphology of the filler particles’ surface does not affect the dependence of the boundary layer thickness on the filler’s volume fraction. However, with an increase in the degree of surface development, the boundary layer thickness decreases.

Аннотация: The properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) P(3HB-co-3HHx) copolymers with different ratios of monomers synthesized by the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 on sugars, and an industrial sample from Kaneka synthesized by the recombinant strain C. necator NSDG-ΔfadB1 on soybean oil, were studied in a comparative aspect and in relation to poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) P(3HB). The copolymer samples, regardless of the synthesis conditions or the ratio of monomers, had reduced values of crystallinity degree (50–60%) and weight average molecular weight (415–520 kDa), and increased values of polydispersity (2.8–4.3) compared to P(3HB) (70–76%, 720 kDa, and 2.2). The industrial sample had differences in its thermal behavior, including a lower glass transition temperature (−2.4 °C), two peaks in its crystallization and melting regions, a lower melting point (Tmelt) (112/141 °C), and a more pronounced gap between Tmelt and the temperature of thermal degradation (Tdegr). The process, shape, and size of the spherulites formed during the isothermal crystallization of P(3HB) and P(3HB-co-3HHx) were generally similar, but differed in the maximum growth rate of the spherulites during exothermic crystallization, which was 3.5–3.7 μm/min for P(3HB), and 0.06–1.25 for the P(3HB-co-3HHx) samples. The results from studying the thermal properties and the crystallization mechanism of P(3HB-co-3HHx) copolymers are important for improving the technologies for processing polymer products from melts.

Аннотация: Рассматривается одноосная пленка сопряженного полимера в плоскости XY с оптической осью Z, состоящая из статистически эквивалентных одноосных доменов среднего размера a. Оптические оси доменов nd хаотично ориентированы в плоскости XY. В области поглощения света домены характеризуются диэлектрическими проницаемостями εj = ε1j + iε2j и показателями преломления Nj = nj + ikj для обыкновенной (j = о) и необыкновенной (j = е) световых волн. Для волн с длиной λ ˃˃ a, волновым вектором k*⊥Z и поляризацией E⊥Z такая пленка является двумерной композитной средой с эффективной диэлектрической проницаемостью ε* = ε1 + iε2 и эффективным показателем преломления N* = n* + ik*. В данной работе получены соотношения, связывающие компоненты ε1*, ε2*, n*, k* с компонентами nj, kj. Для проверки этих соотношений и расчета компонент ε1*, ε2*, n*, k* вместо величин no, ko (ne, ke) использовались экспериментальные значения noA, koA (neA, keA) в областях прозрачности и электронного поглощения для одноосных монодоменных пленок сопряженного полимера F8BT с аксиальной ориентацией (OА) макромолекул относительно оптической оси nA в плоскости XY. Рассчитанные компоненты ε1*, ε2*, n*, k* сравнивались с экспериментальными значениями компонент ε1oP, ε2oP, noP, koP в тех же спектральных областях для обыкновенной световой волны с λ ˃˃ a, k*⊥Z и поляризацией E⊥Z в одноосных полидоменных пленках F8BT с плоскостной ориентацией (OP) макромолекул. Соотношения ε1* ≈ ε1oP, ε2* ≈ ε2oP, n* ≈ noP, k* ≈ koP, установленные здесь с хорошей точностью, показывают близость полидоменных пленок F8BT к идеальному двумерному поликристаллу.An uniaxial film of a conjugated polymer consisting of statistically equivalent uniaxial domains of the average dimension a is considered in the plane XY with the optical axis Z. The optical axes nd of domains are randomly oriented in the plane XY. In the region of light absorption, the domains are characterized by the dielectric constants εj = ε1j + iε2j and the refractive indices Nj = nj + ikj for an ordinary (j = о) and extraordinary (j = е) light waves. For the waves with wavelength λ ˃˃ a, wave vector k*⊥Z and polarization E⊥Z, such polydomain film is two-dimensional composite medium with effective dielectric constant ε* = ε1 + iε2 and effective refractive index N* = n* + ik*. In this work, the relations which connect the components ε1*, ε2*, n*, k* with the components nj, kj were established. For testing the relations and calculating the components ε1*, ε2*, n*, k*, the experimental values noA, koA (neA, keA) were used instead of values no, ko (ne, ke) in the transparency and electronic absorption regions for the uniaxial monodomain films of the conjugated polymer F8BT with axial orientation (OА) of macromolecules with respect to the optical axis nA in the XY plane. The calculated components ε1*, ε2*, n*, k* were compared with the experimental components ε1oP, ε2oP, noP, koP in the same spectral regions for an ordinary light wave with λ ˃˃ a, k*⊥Z, E⊥Z in the uniaxial polydomain F8BT films with in-plane orientation (OP) of macromolecules. The relations ε1* ≈ ε1oP, ε2* ≈ ε2oP, n* ≈ noP, k* ≈ koP established here with good precision show that the polydomain F8BT films are close to the ideal two-dimensional polycrystal.

Аннотация: Uniaxially oriented films of polymer-encapsulated liquid crystals (PELCs) possess strong light-scattering anisotropy. The macroscopic transmittance anisotropy in uniaxially oriented PELC films can be strengthened by adding dichroic dyes to the LC drops. The ratio T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to of the principal components of the optical transmittance polarized perpendicular and parallel to the orientation of the PELCs, respectively, has been measured for He-Ne laser radiation transmitted through uniaxially oriented samples. The experiments showed that the transmittance anisotropy T-perpendicular to/T-parallel to for samples doped with dye is greater than the anisotropy caused only by light scattering. Аннотация: Eco-friendly polymer composites in the form of granules based on biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) with the inclusion of montmorillonite (MMT) from 5 to 50 wt% were prepared by solution-casting and melt extrusion. The physicochemical properties of the composite granules were studied using FTIR spectroscopy, XRDA, DSC, and TGA methods. The paper presents comparative values of crystallinity of composite granules which depend on the method of measuring (XRDA, DSC). It was shown that the crystallinity of PCL/MMT granules was affected by the preparation method and by the MMT content, and that with increase in MMT content, crystallinity increased by up to 61–67%. The change in crystallinity of the granules also affected its biodegradation in soil. At the end of exposure in soil, the mass loss for the granules prepared by solution-casting was more than 90%, whereas for the composite granules prepared by extrusion it was less than 60%. Applying melt extrusion enabled obtaining intercalated composites with predictable features, whereas only mixed-structure microcomposites could be prepared by solution-casting.

Аннотация: На практике используются одноосные полимерные пленки двух типов: монодоменные пленки на ориентирующих подложках с аксиальной ориентацией макромолекул относительно оптической оси пленки n, параллельной плоскости подложки (тип ОА); полидоменные пленки на изотропных подложках с плоскостной ориентацией макромолекул и оптической осью n, нормальной к подложке (тип ОP). Молекулярно-оптическая анизотропия пленки определяется средней по ансамблю анизотропией δγ = γ|| – γ⊥ компонент поляризуемости γj мономерных звеньев полимерных цепей для поляризаций световой волны вдоль (j = ||) и нормально (j = ⊥) оси n. Структурную анизотропию пленки описывают параметры ориентационного порядка U дипольных моментов m электронных (колебательных) переходов в мономерных звеньях макромолекул относительно оси n. Для пленок одного полимера значения параметров Rδ(λ) = δγА/δγP и RU = UA/UP характеризует степень близости полидоменной пленки к идеальному двумерному поликристаллу. В данной работе исследованы зависимость Rδ(λ) от длины световой волны λ в видимой области прозрачности и параметры порядка UA(P) для дипольного момента длинноволнового электронного перехода в монодоменных и полидоменных пленках сопряженного полимера F8BT. Значения Rδ(λ) получены из показателей преломления пленок nj(λ) с учетом компонент fj(λ) = 1 + Lj[nj2(λ) – 1] тензора локального поля. Компоненты Lj тензора Лорентца определены с использованием зависимостей nj(λ). Значения Rδ(λ) согласуются с Rδ = –2 для двумерного поликристалла, состоящего из одноосных кристаллитов. Параметры UA(P) определены с использованием фоновых величин nbj и максимальных значений kjmax компонент комплексного показателя преломления Nj(λ) = nj(λ) + ikj(λ) пленок в области длинноволновой полосы электронного поглощения при учете фоновых значений fbj = 1 + Lj(nbj2 – 1). Экспериментальное значение RU отличается от RU = –2 для двумерного поликристалла, что показывает чувствительность параметра UP к ориентационному беспорядку мономерных звеньев макромолекул в междоменных областях полидоменных пленок.Two types of uniaxial polymer films are used in practice. The first type is singledomain film on orienting substrate with axial orientation of macromolecules with respect to the optical axis of the film n which is parallel to the substrate plane (type ОА). The second type is polydomain film on isotropic substrate with in-plane orientation of macromolecules and the optical axis of the film n which is perpendicular to the substrate plane (type ОP). The molecular-optical anisotropy of a film is defined by the ensemble-averaged anisotropy δγ = γ|| – γ⊥ of the components γj of the polarizability of the monomer units of a polymer for the light-wave polarizations along (j = ||) and across (j = ⊥) the optical axis n. The structural anisotropy of the film is described by the orientation order parameters U of the dipole moments m of the electronic (oscillatory) transitions in monomer units of macromolecule with respect to axis n. For films of the same polymer, the values of Rδ(λ) = δγА/δγP and RU = UA/UP characterize the closeness degree of the polydomain film to the ideal twodimensional polycrystal. In this work, the dependence Rδ(λ) on the light-wavelength λ in the visible range and the order parameters UA(P) for the dipole moment of the long-wavelength electronic transition in single-domain and polydomain films of the conjugated polymer F8BT were studied. The values Rδ(λ) were determined from the refractive indices nj(λ) of the films with the local-field tensor components fj(λ) = 1 + Lj[nj2(λ) – 1]. The Lorentz-tensor components Lj were obtained using the dependences nj(λ). The values Rδ(λ) are in agreement with Rδ = –2 for two-dimensional polycrystal consisted of the uniaxial crystallites. The parameters UA(P) were determined with the use of the background values nbj and maximal values kjmax of the components of the complex refractive indices Nj(λ) = nj(λ) + ikj(λ) of the films in the region of their long-wavelength electronic absorption band, taking into account the background values fbj = 1 + Lj(nbj2 – 1). The experimental value RU differs from RU = –2 for two-dimensional polycrystal. This difference reveals the sensitivity of the parameter UP to the orientation disorder of the monomer units of macromolecules in interdomain regions of polydomain films.

Аннотация: Three-component slow-release fungicide formulations with different modes of action of the active ingredients for suppressing potato pathogens were constructed for the first time. The difenoconazole, mefenoxam, prothioconazole, and azoxystrobin fungicides were embedded in the degradable polymer P(3HB)/birch wood flour blend and examined using SEM, IR spectroscopy, X-ray analysis, DTA, and DSC. Results showed that no chemical bonds were established between the components and that they were physical mixtures that had a lower degree of crystallinity compared to the initial P(3HB), which suggested different crystallization kinetics in the mixtures. The degradation behavior of the experimental formulations was investigated in laboratory micro-ecosystems with pre-characterized field soil. The slow-release fungicide formulations were prolonged-action forms with a half-life of at least 50–60 d, enabling gradual and sustained delivery of the active ingredients to plants. All slow-release fungicide formulations had a strong inhibitory effect on the most common and harmful potato pathogens (Phytophthora infestans, Alternaria longipes, Rhizoctonia solani, and Fusarium solani).

Аннотация: Optical nonlinearities in aggregates of nanoparticles formed in silver hydrosols (SHs) are studied under pico- and nanosecond pulsed laser excitation. The dependence of the nonlinear refractive index n (2) on the degree of hydrosol aggregation is studied experimentally at the wavelength lambda=1.064 mu m. It is found that n (2) changes sign when the degree of hydrosol aggregation is increased. Various physical effects occurring in resonant domains of the aggregates are analyzed using a simple physical model of two bound silver nanoparticles. The theory takes into account thermal, elastic, electrostatic, and light-induced effects. Experimental results are discussed in the context of this theory.

Аннотация: Synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers by the wild-type strain Cupriavidus necator B-10646 on fructose or sodium butyrate as the main C-substrate with the addition of γ-valerolactone as a precursor of 3HV and 4HV monomers was studied. Bacterial cells were cultivated in the modes that enabled production of a series of copolymers with molar fractions of 3HV (from 7.3 to 23.4 mol.%) and 4HV (from 1.9 to 4.7 mol.%) with bacterial biomass concentration (8.2 ± 0.2 g/L) and PHA content (80 ± 2%). Using HPLC, DTA, DSC, X-Ray, SEM, and AFM, the physicochemical properties of copolymers and films prepared from them have been investigated as dependent on proportions of monomers. Copolymers are characterized by a reduced degree of crystallinity (Cx 38–49%) molecular weight characteristics Mn (45–87 kDa), and Mw (201–248 kDa) compared with P(3HB). The properties of the films surface of various composition including the porosity and surface roughness were studied. Most of the samples showed a decrease in the average pore area and an increase in their number with a total increase in 3HV and 4HV monomers. The results allow scaling up the productive synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-4HV) copolymers using Cupriavidus necator B-10646.
