Аннотация: The effect of random one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) inhomogeneities of the magnetic anisotropy on the shape and width of ferromagnetic resonance line in a thin film has been studied in the standard and new self-consistent approximations. It has been shown that resonance peaks in the case of 2D inhomogeneities are much narrower than those for 1D ones. Peaks are asymmetric in both the 1D and 2D cases, but asymmetry is larger in the latter case. As the correlation wavenumber of inhomogeneities kc increases, the width of a resonance line decreases and its amplitude increases. The amplitude of the FMR peak for 2D inhomogeneities increases much faster than that for 1D inhomogeneities. At the critical dimensionless parameter kcd/π ~ 1, where d is the thickness of the film, the width of the resonance line has an inflection point and the asymmetry of this line and the shift of the ferromagnetic resonance peak are maximal. It has been shown that the new self-consistent approximation reproduces the shape of the resonance line much better than the standard self-consistent approximation.

Аннотация: SrLnCuSe3 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) compounds crystallize in the Pnma and Cmcm orthorhombic space group and belong to the Eu2CuS3 and KCuZrS3 structural type, respectively. According to a single-crystal XRD study, the SrTmCuSe3 unit cell parameters are a = 4.0631 (4), b = 13.4544 (14), c = 10.4430 (10) A, and V = 570.88 (10) A3. All the studied SrLnCuSe3 samples in the temperature range of 1.77–300 K demonstrate paramagnetic behavior without any features pointing to magnetic ordering. The measured Curie constants coincide with the values expected for Ln3+ ions with good accuracy, which confirms the stoichiometric composition of the samples and the non-magnetic state of the copper ions, Cu1+ (S = 0). The conducted optical absorption study showed that the polycrystalline SrLnCuSe3 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) samples are semiconductors with a direct bandgap ranging from 2.14 eV to 2.31 eV. Two indirect bandgaps were revealed and explained by the presence of optical transitions to highly dispersive subbands in the conduction band. The compounds demonstrate two reversible phase transitions α⇆β, β⇆γ and an incongruent melting at 1606 K (Dy), 1584 K (Ho), 1634 K (Er), and 1620 K (Tm) associated with the formation of solid solutions of SrSe, Cu2-XSe, and Ln2Se3 binary compounds.

Ludwigites -- Flux growth -- Magnetic susceptibility -- Spin glass state
Аннотация: To study the gradual change of the structure and the magnetic state of the ludwigite Cu2GaBO5 upon Mn3+ doping, single crystals of Cu2Ga1−xMnxBO5 (x = 0.55, 0.7, 0.8) with the size up to 3 × 3 × 10 mm3 were grown using the flux technique. The phase homogeneity and crystal structure of the obtained compounds were investigated by the powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. All the samples possessed the monoclinic-distorted ludwigite structure with the P21/c space group. The study of the actual Cu/Ga/Mn composition by the EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) technique revealed the lower Mn content in all the samples and the refined formulas were Cu2Ga0.47Mn0.53BO5, Cu1.92Ga0.5Mn0.58BO5 and Cu2Ga0.32Mn0.68BO5, respectively. Despite the high manganese content, the concentration transition (from Cu2GaBO5 to Cu2MnBO5) and change of the monoclinic angle did not occur, but strong Me-O octahedra distortions exceeding those both in the parent ludwigites Cu2GaBO5 and Cu2MnBO5 were found. The study of the thermodynamic and magnetic properties revealed the low-temperature magnetic phase transition inherited from the parent Cu2GaBO5 in all the samples. However, the nature and ordering type for the compounds with different Mn content were different: there was a complex transformation of the magnetic state from the partially ordered AFM (antiferromagnetically) in Cu2Ga0.47Mn0.53BO5, through the spin glass state, to the combined spin glass/ordered state in Cu2Ga0.32Mn0.68BO5 with the appearance of magnetic anisotropy. The evident dependence of Tc (phase transition temperature) on the magnetic field was found as well as its decrease at the nonzero magnetic field in the samples with x = 0.53 and 0.68.

Nanocrystallite -- Magnetization ripple -- Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) -- Two-magnon scattering process -- Micromagnetic simulation
Аннотация: With the rapid development of telecommunication technologies and highly integrated electronic devices, researchers show great interest in nanocrystalline soft magnetic thin films with unique characteristics for microwave applications. An important direction of the current research in this field is the study of high-frequency magnetization dynamics that directly depends on the damping processes in a magnetic medium. This paper reports on the effect of sharp broadening and shift of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) line revealed experimentally in a 40-nm-thick nanocrystalline permalloy (Fe20Ni80) thin film at a frequency of about 5 GHz. The effect arises only in films with crystallite size exceeding some critical value Dcr. The micromagnetic simulation demonstrates that exchange and dipolar interactions between randomly oriented crystallites form in the film a quasiperiodic magnetic structure with a characteristic wavelength in the range from 36 nm to 3.3 µm. An analysis of the two-magnon scattering model and simulation results shows that the formed magnetic structure provides the energy transfer from uniform magnetization oscillations (uniform FMR) to spin waves, which results in an additional energy dissipation channel and, consequently, sharp FMR line broadening. A theoretical estimate of the critical crystallite size Dcr based on this model yields a value of ~14.3 nm for 40-nm-thick Fe20Ni80 films.

Activation energy -- Anisotropy -- Cobalt compounds -- Crystal structure -- Electric conductivity -- Electronic properties -- Magnetic moments -- Magnetic susceptibility -- Negative thermal expansion
Аннотация: The investigations of the crystal structure, magnetic and electronic properties of Co3BO5 at high temperatures were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermopower measurements. The orthorhombic symmetry (Sp.gr. Pbam) was observed at 300 K and no evidence of structural phase transitions was found up to 1000 K. The compound shows a strong anisotropy of the thermal expansion. A large negative thermal expansion along the a-axis is observed over a wide temperature range (T = 300–600 K) with αa = −35 M K−1 at T = 500 K with simultaneous expansion along the b- and c-axes with αb = 70 M K−1 and αc = 110 M K−1, respectively. The mechanisms of thermal expansion are explored by structural analysis. The activation energy of the conductivity decreases significantly above 700 K. Electronic transport was found to be a dominant conduction mechanism in the entire temperature range. The correlations between the thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, and effective magnetic moment were revealed and attributed to the evolution of the spin state of Co3+ ions towards the spin crossover and gradual charge-ordering transition.

Bismuth pyrostannate Bi2Sn2O7 is a diamagnet and belongs to the structural type of the A2B2O7 pyrochlore class. In this class of compounds, in the presence of magnetic ions, very interesting magnetic properties appear. Chromium- and iron-substituted bismuth pyrostannates Bi2(Sn0.9Me0.1)2O7, Me = Cr, and Fe were synthesized by solid-phase synthesis. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the samples correspond to the Pc monoclinic cell of the Bi2Sn2O7 α-phase at room temperature. The magnetic properties up to 1100 K in magnetic fields up to 0.86 T and the electric polarization at frequencies of 10, 3, and 1 mHz in the temperature range 80-550 K have been studied. The effect of heterogeneous substitution by Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions on the magnetic properties and electric polarization of bismuth pyrostannate is investigated. An analysis of the experimental data revealed the dependence of the magnetic properties on the degree of filling of the electron shells of chromium and iron ions. The Bi2(Sn0.9Cr0.1)2O7 compound exhibits ferromagnetic properties, while Bi2(Sn0.9Fe0.1)2O7 exhibits antiferromagnetic properties. In chromium-substituted bismuth pyrostannate during the α→β transition, the paramagnetic Curie temperature increases by a factor of 3. The temperature dependence of the inverse magnetic susceptibility is characterized by hysteresis in the temperature range of 400-900 K. The reverse magnetic susceptibility of Bi2(Sn0.9Fe0.1)2O7 in the entire temperature range is satisfactorily described by the Curie-Weiss law. Studies of the magnetic properties have established that the Fe3+ ions are in a high-spin state. The polarization hysteresis in Bi2(Sn0.9Cr0.1)2O7 is found, which shifts along the polarization axis and depends on temperature. Bi2(Sn1-xFex)2O7, x=0.1 is characterized by a linear field dependence. With an increase in the concentration of iron ions, a hysteresis arises in the field dependence of the electric polarization. The hysteresis of polarization in Bi2(Sn0.9Cr0.1)2O7 which depends on temperature was found. The nonlinear field dependence of the polarization in Bi2(Sn0.8Fe0.2)2O7 can be explained by the interaction of the dipole and migration polarizations and the presence of oxygen vacancies. For the Bi2(Sn0.9Cr0.1)2O7 compound, a transition to the dipole glass state was found. In the β-phase of Bi2(Sn0.8Fe0.2)2O7 above T = 400 K, no polarization hysteresis is observed and the electron-relaxation polarization predominates. The mechanism of the occurrence of electronic polarization is explained with the appearance of anionic vacancies upon heterogeneous substitution of tin ions.

Аннотация: The magnetic structure is usually determined by the neutron diffraction measurements. However, in the case of complex multisublattice magnetics, this method fails to give an unambiguous result. Here, on the example of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4, we show that in the case of rare-earth (RE) compounds the right magnetic structure can be determined by additionally using optical spectroscopy and a theoretical analysis based on spectroscopic data. HoFe3(BO3)4 demonstrates a series of phase transitions and interesting magnetic and magnetoelectric properties. The available information on the magnetic structure of the compound, necessary for understanding and utilizing these properties, is contradictory. To resolve the existing ambiguities, we apply a combined approach. The high-resolution spectroscopy data deliver a set of the Ho3+ crystal-field (CF) levels in the paramagnetic and both easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic phases. These data are used to determine CF and Ho3+-Fe3+ exchange parameters and, then, to calculate the temperature dependencies of the magnetic susceptibility tensor of HoFe3(BO3)4. Based on these calculations, we suggest an easy-plane antiferromagnetic structure with a collinear arrangement of the Fe spins along the a axis and induced noncolinear moments of magnetically nonequivalent Ho ions. The suggested structure is further confirmed by single-crystal elastic neutron scattering experiments. We argue that specific features of the magnetic properties of RE iron borates isostructural to HoFe3(BO3)4 are governed by the energy patterns and the symmetry properties of the wave functions of the lower CF levels of the RE ground multiplet in the crystal field of the C2 symmetry.

Micromagnetic simulation -- Nanocrystallites -- Local magnetic anisotropy -- Ferromagnetic resonance -- Magnetization ripple -- Two-magnon scattering process
Аннотация: The size of crystallites is one of the most important factors that determine the key characteristics of nanocrystalline thin magnetic films that make them very promising media for various applications. In this paper, using micromagnetic simulation, we study in detail the influence of the grain size on the magnetic microstructure of the films and its relation with high-frequency dynamics of magnetization. When the grain size exceeds some critical value Dcr, a sharp broadening and shift of the ferromagnetic resonance line are observed at certain frequencies of the alternating magnetic field. Using a two-magnon scattering model, it is shown that these effects are caused by the scattering of spin waves on the inhomogeneous stochastic magnetic structure—magnetization ripple. An expression for the determination of the critical size Dcr is obtained. The micromagnetic simulation results agree with the main conclusions of the static and dynamic theories of magnetization ripple and also confirmed by experimental data reported by other authors.

Аннотация: Superconducting and paramagnetic contributions to the magnetization of polycrystalline Y1−xHoxBa2Cu3O7−δ samples were investigated. The superconductivity is responsible for a partial screening of magnetic ions from an external magnetic field and for a possible sinking of antiferromagnetic correlations between these ions. Magnetic moments of Ho ions influence on a peak effect induced by the order–disorder transition of the Abrikosov vortex lattice. The critical current density and the critical temperature of YBCO are not changed by the Ho doping.
