Аннотация: We present first study of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Ho3+ ion in C4v local symmetry, which it has in fluorite Na0.4Ho0.6F2.2. Optical absorption and MCD spectra were studied in this single crystal in the region of 5I8 5F3, 5F2, 3K8 and 5G5 transitions in the temperature range 3.6–––90 K. It was revealed, that number of transitions observed in the MCD and absorption spectra coincides with the number of transitions only from the doublet E state to singlet excited states. The E-E type transitions are not active in MCD, but they are not observed in the absorption spectra either. Paramagnetic magneto-optical activities (MOA) of the absorption bands and their temperature dependences were measured and interpreted with the help of the theory based on the nature of f-f transitions allowance. The MCD spectra were also analyzed in approximation of the J,±MJ wave functions of the free atom. It was shown in particular, that the lowest initial state of the transitions observed at T ˃ 10 K had MJ = 7, but this is not the lowest state of the holmium ion in the crystal. A little lower there is a quasi-doublet with MJ = 8 and, accordingly, with a higher magneto-optical activity of transitions from it. However, the intensity of transitions from this state is low.

Аннотация: We summarize the current knowledge on crystal structures, synthesis, applications, and Raman spectroscopy of Wadsley phases of vanadium oxide, including VO2 (B), V6O13, V4O9, V3O7, and V2O5. While these oxides have garnered significant attention for potential energy storage applications and have been studied for decades, there remains inconsistency in data regarding their characteristic Raman spectra. To address this, we synthesized a series of Wadsley phases by physical vapor deposition of amorphous vanadium oxide films and subsequent annealing in a controlled environment. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the formation of VO2 (B), V6O13, V4O9, and V3O7. We meticulously measured the room-temperature Raman spectra of these phases, offering robust reference data for the easy identification of vanadium oxides in unknown samples. Finally, we studied low-temperature phase transitions in VO2 (B) and V6O13.

Аннотация: Phase transitions can change the crystal structure and modify the physical properties of crystals. In this work, we investigate the phase transition behavior in BaGa4Se7, an important middle infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, in the temperature range from room temperature to 1173 K. Interestingly, the BaGa4Se7 crystal undergoes a reversible ferroelastic phase transition at T = 528 K, resulting in the presence of a newly discovered phase (γ-phase) at the higher temperature. The experimental temperature dependence of optical birefringence, as well as the first-principles birefringence and NLO coefficients, reveals that the γ-phase exhibits larger birefringence and better NLO properties compared with those of the low-temperature phase (α-phase). This work demonstrates that phase-transition-induced structural modification can improve the mid-IR NLO properties, which would provide an effective avenue to obtain materials with good optoelectronic performance.

Аннотация: A study of heat capacity, thermal dilatation and sensitivity to hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure was carried out on single-crystal and ceramic samples of NH4HSeO4. The main parameters of low-temperature successive phase transitions B2 (T1) ↔ incommensurate IC (T2) ↔ ferroelectric P1 (T3) ↔ non-ferroelectric did not depend on the type of samples. The behavior of the volumetric strain and the results of direct measurements of T3(p) contributed to the resolution of the longstanding problem associated with the ambiguity of the sign of the corresponding volumetric baric coefficient. The role of thermal expansion anisotropy in the formation of the piezocaloric effect (PCE) near the ferroelectric phase transition at T3 has been studied. Due to the strong difference in the linear baric coefficients, the main contribution to the barocaloric effect (BCE) comes from the inverse intensive and extensive PCE associated with the a-axis. Compared to a single crystal, ceramics demonstrate lower BCE values, which, however, exist in a wider temperature range, which leads to close values of integral caloric parameters. The strong decrease in both BCE and PCE at low-temperature transformations in NH4HSeO4 compared to the ferroelectrics NH4HSO4 and NH4NH4SO4 is associated with a small change in entropy during three low-temperature phase transitions, ΣΔSi = 2.52 J/mol∙K, which is a consequence of a high degree of structural ordering in selenate as a result of a high-temperature transformation at T0 between the superionic and B2 phases, accompanied by a giant change in entropy, ΔS0≈Rln21.

Аннотация: Sequence of structural transitions in the magnetically ordered region and a displacement-type structural transition at T = 220 K accompanied by the variation in the thermal expansion coefficient, ultrasound attenuation coefficient, g factor, and polarization current in the polycrystalline compound Ho0.1Mn0.9S was found. The electronic transitions above room temperature were established on the basis of the measurements of the conductivity, ultrasound attenuation maxima, and IR spectra.

Аннотация: The effects of exciton Bose condensation in strongly correlated spin crossover systems are considered within the effective Hamiltonian obtained from the two-orbital Hubbard–Kanamori model. The spectrum of collective excitations at various points of the temperature-crystal field phase diagram is calculated. The role of the electron–phonon interaction is discussed. A novel mechanism of excitonic and related magnetic order photoenhancement in strongly correlated spin crossover systems based on the massive collective phase mode appearance is demonstrated. In addition, we have shown that exciton and associated with it magnetic ordering can be photoinduced outside the exciton condensate phase due to the gap presence in the spectrum of single excitations.

Аннотация: Low-temperature thermodynamic properties of spin ice have been studied for compounds with the structure of antiperovskite containing rare-earth ions with the general chemical formula ReMeO (where Re - is a rare-earth element, Me - is a divalent metal). The calculations were carried out in the cluster approximation. The cases of undistorted and distorted ORe6 octahedron are discussed. In the case of an undistorted octahedron in the absence of an external magnetic field, the ground state of the system is infinitely degenerate. When an external magnetic field is applied, anomalies in the temperature dependences of heat capacity, entropy and magnetization are detected. In the case of a distorted octahedron and assuming that this distortion leads to the energy efficiency of two of the sixty-four configurations, it is obtained that there is a phase transition in the system of magnetic rare-earth ions.

Аннотация: Cu2FeBO5 ludwigite single crystals have been grown from a solution–melt by spontaneous crystallization. Using the X-ray diffraction method, the crystal structure has been resolved in detail. Cations in sites M2, M3, and M4 have turned out to be structurally disordered. It has been found that oxygen atoms are disordered in one of five nonequivalent sites (O4). As can be seen from Mossbauer spectroscopy data, Fe3+ ions occupy four nonequivalent sites with different distortions of coordination octahedra. In the temperature range 40 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K, the spectra represent a superposition of quadrupole doublets. Static susceptibility measurements have revealed two magnetic features at T1 = 35 K and T2 = 20 K and spin-glass effects. Specific heat measurements in the interval 4–300 K have not discovered magnetic-transition-related anomalies.

Аннотация: Experimental and theoretical study of submillimeter (terahertz) spectroscopic and magnetic properties of the rare-earth aluminum borate HoAl3(BO3)4 were performed at temperatures 3–300K. In the transmittance spectra a number of resonance lines were detected at frequencies 2–35 cm–1 for different radiation polarizations. These modes were identified as transitions between the lower levels of the ground multiplet of the Ho3+ ion split by the crystal field, including both transitions from the ground state to the excited ones and transitions between the excited states. The established excitation conditions of the observed modes and the simulation of the spectra made it possible to separate the magnetic and electric dipole transitions and to determine the energies of the corresponding states, their symmetry, and the matrix elements of the transitions. Low-frequency lines that do not fit into the established picture of the electron states of Ho3+ were also found; these lines, apparently, correspond to the ions with the distorted by defects local symmetry of the crystal field.
