Аннотация: We have studied spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a combined defect consisting of a nanocomposite layer and a twist. The nanocomposite layer is made of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and featuring effective resonant permittivity. A solution has been found for the transmission spectrum of circularly polarized waves in the structure. We have analyzed spectral splitting of the defect mode in the band gap of the cholesteric when its frequency coincides with the nanocomposite resonant frequency. Defect modes have characteristics strongly dependent on the magnitude and the sign of the phase difference of the cholesteric helix on both sides of the defect layer. It has been found that the band gap width and the position and localization degree of defect modes can be effectively controlled by external fields applied to the cholesteric.

Аннотация: The transport properties of a novel foamed superconductor Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3Ox have been studied. As the analysis of resistive transitions in a magnetic field shows, the dissipation follows a thermally activated flux creep model with the temperature- independent pinning potential in S-N-S-type Josephson junctions.

Аннотация: The films of nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloys obtained by various methods in the permalloy composition range (similar to 20 at. % Fe) were studied by the method of spin-wave resonance (SWR) spectroscopy. The effective SW exchange stiffness eta (eff) exhibits a characteristic dependence on the spin wavelength, which is indicative of the magnetization fluctuations in these films with a correlation radius of 12-20 nm. This is indirect evidence of the microphase separation in these nanocrystalline alloys and provides an estimate of the characteristic spatial size of an inhomogeneity in the atomic ratio X-Fe/X-Ni . Аннотация: We report and discuss the grain size dependence of the coercivity and approach magnetization to saturation in the FeCoB ribbons. Instead of expected three-dimensional magnetic correlations for 20 mu m thick ribbon with grain size about 10 nm, the observed behavior could be attributed to the two-dimensional stochastic magnetic domains and two dimensional magnetization ripple. Аннотация: The magnetic and resonance properties of CoNi(P) alloys, synthesized by chemical deposition as films on single crystal silicon substrates and as filaments in linear pores of porous silicon substrates, were studied by magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. It is established that CoNi(P) alloys of the same composition but different morphologies occur in states characterized by different degrees of nonequilibrium, which is manifested by different modes of the magnetization approach to saturation. Аннотация: We demonstrate that ferromagnetic metal/insulator/semiconductor hybrid structures represent a class of materials with the giant magnetoimpedance effect. In a metal-insulator-semiconductor diode with the Schottky barrier fabricated on the basis of the Fe/SiO2/n-Si structure, a drastic change in the impedance in an applied magnetic field was found. The maximum value of this effect was observed at temperatures of 10–30 K in the frequency range of 10 Hz–1 MHz where the ac magnetoresistance and magnetoreactance ratios exceeded 300% and 600%, respectively. In the low-frequency region (<1 kHz), these ratios could be controlled in wide range by applying bias to the device. The main contribution to the impedance when measured at temperatures corresponding to the strongest magnetic-field sensitivity comes from the interface states localized near the SiO2/n-Si interface and the processes of their recharging in an applied ac voltage. The applied magnetic field changes the energy structure of the interface states, thus affecting the processes of the charging dynamics.

Аннотация: Faraday rotation (FR) spectral, field, and temperature dependencies in oxide glasses with small additions of paramagnetic elements are investigated. Formation of ferrite nanoparticles in amorphous glass matrices is revealed by X-ray diffraction. Particles have crystal structure similar to spinel structure, their dimensions are about 10-24 nm. The FR field dependencies are typical for ferrimagnetic or superparamagnetic substances depending on particle size. Strong FR increase at the samples cooling (more than twice for some samples) in the temperature interval 105-273 K is observed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The structures and electron properties of new superlattices formed on graphene by adsorbed hydrogen molecules are theoretically described. It has been shown that superlattices of the (n, 0) zigzag type with linearly arranged pairs of H atoms have band structures similar to the spectra of (n, 0) carbon nanotubes. At the same time. superlattices of the (n, n) type with a "staircase" of adsorbed pairs of H atoms are substantially metallic with a high density of electronic states at the Fermi level and this property distinguishes their spectra from the spectra of the corresponding (n, n) nanotubes. The features of the spectra have the Van Hove form, which is characteristic of each individual superlattice. The possibility of using such planar structures with nanometer thickness is discussed.

Аннотация: Equilibrium states of the system of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of n-alkanethiol molecules HS(CH2)(n-1)(X) with polar group X chemiabsorbed on the Au(111) crystal surface are considered. The couplings between the atoms (C, H) of the n-alkanethiols are approximated by the Lennard-Jones potential. The couplings between the n-alkanethiols and the crystal surface are approximated by the 12-3 potential. The interactions of polar groups and the self-images with the metal substrate are taken into consideration. The phase-transition temperatures, the structural order and equilibrium tilt, and the twist and azimuthal angles of the macromolecules, which depend on the dipole moments, are found. Аннотация: IIn this work, the effect of ZrO2 nanoparticles prepared in a low-pressure arc discharge plasma on magnetic flux pinning of granular YBa2Cu3O7-y /nanoZrO2 composites has been studied. It has been shown that the ZrO2 nanoparticles do not change the superconducting transition and the microstructure of superconductors. At a temperature of 5 K, the addition of 0.5 and 1 wt % of ZrO2 nanoparticles may lead to the additional effect of magnetic flux pinning and the increase in the critical current density J c. The J c value for composites with 1 wt % is two times larger than that for the reference sample. The fishtail effect is observed for YBa2Cu3O7-y /nanoZrO2 composites at the temperatures of 20 and 50 K. The problems associated with the additional effect of magnetic flux pinning of granular YBa2Cu3O7-y /nanoZrO2 composites and the appearance of the fishtail effect have been discussed.

Аннотация: The magnetoresistive properties of bulk YBCO + CuO and YBCO + BaPb0.75Sn0.25O3 composites for different orientations of external magnetic field H and macroscopic transport current j have been measured. These composites exhibit large magnetoresistance in weak magnetic fields (< 100 Oe), which makes them promising candidates for practical application in magnetic field sensor devices. The difference between.( T) dependences, magnetoresistance curves R( H) and current - voltage characteristics measured for H parallel to j and H || j is observed indicating the presence of the Lorentz- force- dependent dissipation in the composites. Angular dependences of magnetoresistance R(theta) ( where theta = angle H, j) of the composites in weak magnetic fields are found to be proportional to sin(2)theta. This fact suggests that the flux flow in the intergrain boundaries is responsible for the large magnetoresistive effect observed in the composites.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of planar Co/Si nanostructures with different nominal thicknesses of the magnetic (2-42 nm) and nonmagnetic (0.3-10 nm) constituent layers are studied in the temperature range 4.2-300 K. It is established that in the presence of Si layers the spontaneous magnetization of Co decreases and its temperature dependence changes, and magnetic hysteresis is modified. The interlayer influence is interpreted as being due to the diffusion of Si into the Co layers, which results in the formation of magnetically disordered boundary interfaces with low average magnetization. The depth of the interfaces depends on the nominal thickness of the Si layers and is estimated to reach 1.6 nm. A qualitative explanation of the characteristics of the magnetization of the experimental objects under the influence of a magnetic field and temperature is given in a model where the interfaces have a granular microstructure. Аннотация: The method of spin-wave resonance has been used to detect in multilayer (Co98P2/Co95P5)N structures a modification of the exchange spin wave spectrum due to the formation of the first, second, and third Brillouin zones in a one-dimensional magnon crystal formed by a periodic modulation of the exchange. The band gaps have been measured for wave vectors kb = π/(d1 + d2) and 2kb.

Аннотация: The [(Co0.88Fe0.12)/Cu]N synthetic antiferromagnet has been investigated by the spin wave resonance method over the entire range of angles of an external dc magnetic field to the film surface normal. The investigations have shown that the superlattice under study consists of two exchange-coupled magnetic subsystems, each manifested in the recorded spectra as a series of spin-wave modes. The dependence of the linear region of propagation of a standing spin-wave mode on the sample orientation in an external magnetic field has been established.

Аннотация: Atomic and electronic structures of adsorbed nickel and vanadium atoms and nanoclusters (Ni-n and V-n, n = 1-10) on hexagonal h-BN and BC3 lattices were studied using DFT PBE/PBC/PW (Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof potential of density functional theory/periodic boundary conditions/plane wave basis set) technique. For the sake of comparison the structure and properties of the same nanoclusters deposited on pristine graphene were calculated as well. It was found that for all types of supports an increase of n from 1 to 10 leaded to decrease of coordination types from eta(6) to eta(2) and eta(1). The h-BN- and BC3-based nanocomposites were characterized by high (up to 18 mu for Ni10/BC3) magnetic moments of the nanoclusters and featured by positive binding energies. The graphene-based nanocomposites revealed energetic stability and, in general, lower magnetic moments per unit cell. The direct potential energy barriers for migration of Ni eta(2)/eta(2) and eta(6)/eta(6) types of dimers on graphene were low (10.9-28.9 kJ/mol) with high reverse barriers for eta(6)/eta(6) dimers, which favored dynamically equilibrated Ni clusterization on graphene. Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of ZnO-Fe3O4 nanocomposites produced by the solid-state reaction Zn + 3Fe2O3 → ZnO + 2Fe3O4 upon annealing of Zn/α-Fe2O3 films under vacuum at a temperature of 450°C have been studied. Ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 clusters with an average grain size of 40 nm and a magnetization of ∼430 emu/cm3 at room temperature, which are surrounded by a ZnO layer with a large contact surface, have been synthesized. The magnetic characteristics of the ZnO-Fe3O4 nanocomposite in the temperature range of 10–300 K have been presented.

Аннотация: The solid-phase synthesis of manganese silicides on the Si(100)2 × 1 surface coated at room temperature by a 2-nm-thick manganese film has been investigated using high-energy-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. The dynamics of variation of the phase composition and electronic structure of the near-surface region with increasing sample annealing temperature to 600°C, has been revealed. It has been shown that, under these conditions, a solid solution of silicon in manganese, metallic manganese monosilicide MnSi, and semiconductor silicide MnSi1.7 are successively formed on the silicon surface. The films of both silicides are not continuous, with the fraction of the substrate surface occupied by them decreasing with increasing annealing temperature. The binding energies of the Si 2p and Mn 3p electrons in the compounds synthesized have been determined.

Аннотация: The explosive evaporation of a fullerene mixture in a vacuum of ∼10−2 Pa during the contraction of a 1-kW hollow electron beam into a spot on a substrate in a time of 0.1–1 s is considered. A comparative analysis of the Raman spectra and the absorption electron spectra of a starting fullerene mixture powder and the vapor condensates shows that the evaporation of C60 and C70 fullerenes proceeds without breaking C–C covalent bonds.

Аннотация: The n-alkanethiols CH3(CH2)(n-1) on the crystal surface of gold (111) are considered. Couplings between atoms (C, H) of the n-alkanethiols were modelled by the Morse potential, and couplings between the n-alkanethiols and the crystal surface were modelled by 12-3 potentials. Because of symmetry Z(2) of the n-alkanethiols in a tilted state, the system can be reduced to the Ising model on the triangular lattice, the phase diagram of which can be explicitly considered. Depending on the choice of the coupling parameters, the ordered state of the system may form an incommensurate or 2X1 superstructure. The temperatures of the phase transition, equilibrium tilting, twisting, and azimuthal angles are found to depend on the Morse coupling constants.

Аннотация: To study spin-dependent transport phenomena in Fe3Si/p-Si structures we fabricated 3-terminal planar microdevices and metal/semiconductor diode using conventional photolithography and wet chemical etching. IaEuro'V curve of prepared diode demonstrates rectifying behavior, which indicates the presence of Schottky barrier in Fe3Si/p-Si interface. Calculated Schottky barrier height is 0.57 eV, which can provide necessary conditions for spin accumulation in p-Si. Indeed, in 3-terminal planar device with Fe3Si/p-Si Schottky contact Hanle effect was observed. By the analysis of Hanle curves spin lifetime spin diffusion length in p-Si were calculated, which are 145 ps and 405 nm, respectively (at T = 300 K). Spin lifetime strongly depends on temperature which can be related to the fact that spin-dependent transport in our device is realized via the surface states. This gives a perspective of creation of spintronic devices based on metal/semiconductor structure without need for forming tunnel or Schottky tunnel contact.
