Аннотация: Mode hybridization is a unique way to manipulate the mode inside a fixed cavity or at interface. For example, Tamm plasmon-polariton at solid interface can be spectrally shifted without tuning the interface. Experimental implementation of tunable hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes is reported. The hybrid modes are excited in a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded with a gold layer by attaching a nematic liquid crystal microcavity. Coupling between Tamm plasmon-polariton and microcavity modes leads to repulsion of their dispersion curves controlled by the refractive index of a liquid crystal and the polarization of incident light. Effective tuning of hybrid modes through heating or applying an external electric field to the liquid crystal layer is demonstrated. The experimentally measured strength coupling value between Tamm and microcavity modes was 20.7 meV.

Аннотация: The interference of nonpolarized light transmitted through an ensemble of nematic liquid crystal domains formed on a polycarbonate surface has been investigated. A model based on the superposition of the ordinary and extraordinary beams passing through domains with a radial structure has been developed. Expressions for the phase difference and intensity of the interfering beams have been derived that take into account the distribution of the liquid crystal director field. The dependences of the optical transmittance of a domain layer on the applied voltage have been calculated with regard to the material and optical constants of a liquid crystal and structural features and averaged morphological parameters of individual domains in the experimental sample. The results of the calculation are consistent with the experimental data, which confirms the validity of the proposed model. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: The existence of bound states in the continuum (BIC) manifests a general wave phenomenon first predicted in quantum mechanics by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner [J. von Neumann and E. Wigner, Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. Today it is being actively explored in photonics, radiophysics, acoustics, and hydrodynamics. We report an experimental observation of an electromagnetic bound state in the radiation continuum in a one-dimensional array of dielectric particles. By measurement of the transmission spectra of the ceramic disk chain at GHz frequencies, we demonstrate how a resonant state in the vicinity of the center of the Brillouin zone turns into a symmetry-protected BIC with increase in the number of the disks. We estimate a number of the disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain could be considered practically as infinite. The presented analysis is supplemented by measurements of the near fields of the symmetry-protected BIC. All measurements are in a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulation and analytical model based on a tight-binding approximation. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with bound states in the continuum that opens up horizons for the development of optical and radio-frequency metadevices.

Interference variations of the intensity of the unpolarized light propagating through the ensemble of liquid crystal domains formed on the polycarbonate surface were investigated. By calculation methods, the expressions for the light intensity and the phase delay between ordinary and extraordinary rays were obtained taking into account the change of the nematic director orientation under the action of the electric field. Experimental dependences of the light intensity on voltage are consistent with the calculated ones. The scattering of light during its propagation through the growing domains was studied. It is shown that the interference intensity changes at varying voltage are caused by the superposition of extraordinary and ordinary rays passing through the domains.

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal -- Nematic droplet -- Ionic surfactant -- Anchoring transition -- Director configuration -- Optical texture
Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: We consider scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by a linear periodic array of dielectric spheres. For incident waves with circular polarization with frequency tuned to the bound states with orbital angular momentum in the radiation continuum, the spin angular momentum of the incident wave transfers into the orbital angular momentum. This, in turn, gives rise to giant vortical power currents rotating around the array. Incident wave with linear polarization with frequency tuned to the Bloch bound state in the continuum induces giant laminar power currents.

photonic crystal -- nanocomposite -- optical Tamm state -- shelled -- nanoparticles -- effective permittivity
Аннотация: We investigate the optical Tamm states (OTSs) localized at the interface between a photonic crystal (PC) and a nanocomposite consisting of spherical nanoparticles with a dielectric core and a metallic shell, which are dispersed in a transparent matrix, and is characterized by the resonance permittivity. Spectra of transmission, reflection, and absorption of normally incident light waves by the investigated structure are calculated. The spectral manifestation of the Tamm states caused by negative values of the real part of the effective permittivity in the visible spectral range is studied. It is demonstrated that, along with the significantly extended band gap of the PC, the transmission spectrum contains an additional stopband caused by nanocomposite absorption near the resonance frequency. It is shown that the OTSs can be implemented in two band gaps of the PCs, each corresponding to a certain plasmon resonance frequency of the nanocomposite. It is established that the characteristics of the Tamm state localized at the edge of the PCs significantly depend on the ratio between the particle core volume and the total particle volume.

Аннотация: Effect of high pressure induced spin crossover on the magnetic, electronic and structural properties of the minerals forming the Earth's low mantle is discussed. The low temperature P, T phase diagram of ferropericlase has the quantum phase transition point P = 56 GPa at T = 0 confirmed recently by the synchrotron Mossbauer spectroscopy. The LDA+GTB calculated phase diagram describes the experimental data. Its extension to the high temperature resulted earlier in prediction of the metallic properties of the Earth's mantle at the depth 1400 km h 1800 km. Estimation of the electrical conductivity based on the percolation theory is given. We discuss also the thermodynamic properties and structural anomalies resulting from the spin crossover and metal insulator transition and compare them with the experimental seismic and geomagnetic field data.

Аннотация: This study is concerned with the optical response of an electro-optical material consisting of nematic liquid crystal as well as ionic surfactant as a dopant. The dopant is a key component to carry out the working of the resulting device through configuration switching. The operational principle is based on the surface anchoring transition induced by a steady electric field. The dynamic characteristics of the electro-optical cell can be considerably improved when the nematic layer is reoriented from the initially homeoplanar director configuration into the twisted state. Besides, a method to shorten the relaxation time is demonstrated by using a controlling pulse with a bipolar waveform. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: A one-dimensional asymmetric photonic crystal with dual-frequency liquid crystal as a central defect layer was demonstrated. Such asymmetric structure was characterized by the dramatic increase in intensity of the electric field of light localized at the overlapped photonic bandgap edges, thereby enhancing the observed transmittance of the spectral windows originating from the defect layer. The defect layer was made of a dual-mode liquid crystal that exhibited not only electrical tunability and switchability but also optical bistability. Consequently, tunable and bistable defect modes can be realized in the photonic structure. This asymmetric photonic crystal structure is promising and should be further explored for photonic device applications. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
