Аннотация:
Исследовано оптическое пропускание гибридно-упорядоченного нематического слоя с поверхностной линией дисклинации, деформированного импульсным магнитным полем. Получены выражения для времен реакции на полевое воздействие и релаксации жидкого кристалла к недеформированному состоянию. Время реакции оказалось существенно больше расчетного значения и сопоставимым с длительностью импульса магнитного поля. Выведены зависимости интенсивности света от разности фаз между обыкновенным и необыкновенным лучами с учетом рассеяния. Для процесса релаксации получено хорошее совпадение экспериментальной и расчетной временных зависимостей интенсивности лазерного излучения, прошедшего через весь слой жидкого кристалла, за исключением тонкого переходного приповерхностного слоя. Аномалия хода кривой релаксации в переходном слое рассмотрена в рамках известных модельных представлений.
The optical transmission of a hybrid-ordered nematic layer with a surface disclination line, strained by a pulsed magnetic field, is studied. The expressions for the reaction times to the field action and relaxation of a
liquid
crystal
to an untrained state are obtained. The experimental reaction time turned out to be significantly longer than its calculated value and comparable to the magnetic field pulse duration. The light intensity dependences on the phase difference between the ordinary and extraordinary rays, taking into account scattering are derived. For the relaxation process, good agreement is obtained between the experimental and calculated time dependences of the laser radiation intensity transmitted through the entire
liquid
crystal
layer, with the exception of a thin transitional near-surface layer. The anomaly in the course of the relaxation curve run in the transition layer is considered within the framework of the known model concepts.

Аннотация:
Defect modes are investigated in a band gap of an electrically tunable one-dimensional photonic
crystal
infiltrated with a twisted-nematic
liquid
crystal
. Their frequency shift and interference under applied voltage are studied both experimentally and theoretically. We deal with the case where the defect layer thickness is much larger than the wavelength (i.e., the Mauguin condition). It is shown theoretically that the defect modes could have a complex structure with elliptic polarization. Two series of polarized modes are coupled with each other and exhibit an avoided crossing phenomenon in the case of opposite parity.

Аннотация:
The polarization exchange effect in a twisted-nematic Fabry-Perot resonator is experimentally confirmed in the regimes of both uniform and electric-field-deformed twisted structures. The polarization of output light in the transmission peaks is shown to be linear rather than elliptical. The polarization deflection from the nematic director grows from 0 degrees to 90 degrees. angle and exchanges the longitudinal and transverse directions. Untwisting of a nematic by a voltage leads to the rotation of the polarization plane of light passing through the resonator. The polarization exchange effect allows using the investigated resonator as a spectral-selective linear polarizer with the voltage-controlled rotation of the polarization plane.

Аннотация:
The surface anchoring of a nematic doped with the ionic surfactant has been investigated and compared with the one in the undoped sample. The director tilt angle at the substrates coated with the orienting polymer film has been determined by the null method in a rotating magnetic field. The Frederiks transition in a magnetic field has been chosen as a convenient technique to measure the polar anchoring energy Wθ. The temperature dependences of anchoring energy have been obtained for the various nematic cells. The Wθ values for nematic doped with the ionic surfactant are less than for the undoped one. The factors affecting the measurement accuracy have been discussed. The accuracy is higher for the thinner nematic layers and weaker anchoring energy.

Transmission spectra of a one-dimensional photonic
crystal
(PC) formed by two multilayer dielectric mirrors and a planar oriented layer of 5CB nematic
liquid
crystal
(LC) that is sandwiched between these mirrors and serves as a structure defect are investigated experimentally. Specific features of the behavior of the spectrum of defect modes as a function of the angle of incidence of light on the
crystal
are studied for two polarizations: parallel and perpendicular to the director of the LC; the director either lies in the plane of incidence or is perpendicular to it. It is shown that, for the configurations considered, the maxima of the defect modes shift toward the short-wavelength region as the tilt angle of incidence radiation increases; this tendency is more manifest for the parallel-polarized component, when the director lies in the plane of incidence. In the latter case, the width of the photonic band gap (PBG) appreciably decreases. The temperature dependence of the polarization components of the transmission spectra of a PC is investigated in the case of normal incidence of light. The spectral shift of defect modes due to the variation of the refractive index of the LC at the nematic-isotropic
liquid
phase transition point is measured. It is shown that, in real PCs, the amplitude of defect modes decreases when approaching the center of the band gap, as well as when the number of layers in the dielectric mirrors increases. Theoretical transmission spectra of the PCs calculated by the method of recurrence relations with regard to the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with experimental data.

Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic
liquid
crystal
(LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic
liquid
crystal
LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.

The polarized electronic absorption spectra, orientation ordering, and the special local field features were studied for push-pull linear dye molecules with strong donor-acceptor electronic conjugation of terminal fragments in the matrix of a nematic
liquid
crystal
. The temperature-induced inversion of the sign of the splitting of polarized impurity absorption bands was observed. This effect was shown to be caused by the statistical character of orientation ordering of impurity molecules and manifestation of the higher moments of the orientation distribution function. The dependence of local field parameters (Lorentz tensor components) of impurity molecules on their orientation ordering was established. This dependence was used to reproduce the temperature dependence of the orientation order parameter of the matrix. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация:
The propagation of a laser beam through a hybrid-aligned nematic layer with a surface disclination line has been investigated. A model of the light interference has been developed to consider the scattering by the structural inhomogeneities. The analytical expression that includes the factor characterizing an exponential decrease in the light scattering has been obtained. The dependence of the intensity of light transmitted through the layer on the magnetic field has been measured. The dependence has been accompanied by the interference oscillations. The theoretical expression is consistent with the experiment, which confirms the correctness of the model concepts.

The behaviour of methoxy benzylidene butyl aniline (MBBA) nematic
liquid
crystal
on the;cleavage surface of triglycine sulphate under a strong magnetic field has been investigated. With the saturation regime obtained for the
liquid
crystal
cell in fields up to 100 kOe, for the first time the possibility appears to determine not only the ordinary anchoring coefficient W-2, but the effective anchoring energy W* without any fitting procedure. Considerable difference in these parameters (two orders of magnitude) disagrees with "electrical" corrections of the Rapini-Papoular approximation. This discrepancy is connected with the surface polarization caused by spontaneous ordering of longitudinal components of MBBA molecular dipoles on interface. The form of the anisotropic interaction potential for such interfaces has to take into account polar effects in near-surface layers of the
liquid
crystal

This study is concerned with the optical response of an electro-optical material consisting of nematic
liquid
crystal
as well as ionic surfactant as a dopant. The dopant is a key component to carry out the working of the resulting device through configuration switching. The operational principle is based on the surface anchoring transition induced by a steady electric field. The dynamic characteristics of the electro-optical cell can be considerably improved when the nematic layer is reoriented from the initially homeoplanar director configuration into the twisted state. Besides, a method to shorten the relaxation time is demonstrated by using a controlling pulse with a bipolar waveform. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация:
The orientational transitions induced by electrically controlled ionic modification of surface anchoring in
liquid
crystal
cells based on the nematics with small or zero dielectric anisotropy Δε are considered. The type of director reorientation is shown to be independent of the sign of dielectric anisotropy and can be the same for the nematics with both negative and positive Δε. Besides, the orientational transition and corresponding switchable optical states do not depend on the Δε value and can be effectively realised even for the nematics with zero dielectric anisotropy.

Аннотация:
The polarized optical states in the transmission spectrum of a twisted-nematic Fabry-Perot cavity with the distinctly broken Mauguin's waveguide regime have been theoretically and experimentally investigated. Specific features of the electric field-induced transformation of the polarization and spectral characteristics of eigenmodes of the neighboring series at the overlap resonant frequencies have been examined. It is demonstrated that the linear polarizations of eigenmodes at the cavity boundaries remain nearly orthogonal and their frequency trajectories reproduce the avoided crossing phenomenon. The experimental data are confirmed analytically and by the numerical simulation of light transmission through the investigated anisotropic multilayer with the use of a Berreman matrix method. The results obtained can be generalized to any materials with the helix response.
