Аннотация: A study is reported of the structural, magnetic, and magneto-optic properties of Mn/Dy/Bi films obtained by multilayer technology. The maximum Kerr rotation angle in such films is shown to be theta(k) = 2.25 degrees. Possible reasons for such a large Kerr effect enhancement are considered, namely, an increase in the 6p - 3d transition probability caused by symmetry distortion, polarization of the Bi6p band, and a change in the density of states near the Fermi level. The latter reason has been analyzed by simulating the electronic structure of Mn/Dy/Bi through superposition of Dy levels on the MnBi band structure. This approach has revealed possible additional transitions which may be induced by the presence of a Dy buffer and could contribute to the Kerr magneto-optic effect. Аннотация: A many-electron model of the energy band structure of VBO3 and of Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions is proposed with strong electron correlations taken into account. Experimental optical absorption spectra and data on the resistivity are discussed in the framework of the suggested model. Variation in the magnetic and electronic properties of VBO3 and Fe1 - xVxBO3 under high pressure is predicted. For VBO3, a Mott-Hubbard (insulator-metal) transition is expected in the high-pressure phase. In Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions, a nontrivial variation in the properties is predicted, leading to the appearance of a different magnetic state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Infrared absorption spectra of the bismuth pyrostannate Bi2(Sn0.95Cr0.05)2O7 were investigated in the frequency range 350-1100 cm-1 at temperatures of 110-525 K. Four frequency regions with split absorption lines are distinguished. Softening of frequencies at the structural transitions was observed. The maxima of permittivity measured in the frequency range 1-200 kHz at temperatures 100-400 K were determined. It was found that the magnetic susceptibility changes its sign in the low-temperature region. The correlation between anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility, permittivity, and absorption line intensity was established. Softening of frequencies is explained by the variation in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the lattice. The temperature behavior of permittivity is described using the Debye model. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Аннотация: The synthesis of nanoparticles inside microorganisms is an economical alternative to chemical and physical methods of nanoparticle synthesis. In this study, ferrihydrite nanoparticles synthesized by Klebsiella oxytoca bacterium in special conditions were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), small-angle X-ray (SAXS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and molecular docking. The morphology and the structure of the particles were characterized by means of SEM and SAXS. The elemental content was determined by means of the EDS method. The absorption properties of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles were investigated by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The binding mechanism of the biogenic ferrihydrite nanoparticles to Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) protein, studied by fluorescence, showed a static and weak process, combined with FRET. Protein denaturation by temperature and urea in the presence of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles demonstrated their influence on the unfolding process. The AutoDock Vina and UCSF Chimera programs were used to predict the optimal binding site of the ferrihydrite to BSA and to find the location of the hydrophobic cavities in the sub-domain IIA of the BSA structure.

Аннотация: Ferrospheres with the Fe2O3 content in the range from 76 to 97 wt% were applied as catalysts for the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). To identify their phase composition and distribution of iron sites, the ferrospheres were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy before and after the OCM reaction. Magnetite-based ferrite spinel, hematite and aluminosilicate glasses were established to be the main phases. The ferrospinel of all ferrospheres partially oxidized to hematite after the OCM reaction. It was established that the yield of C-2-hydrocarbons sharply increased at the ferrospheres with Fe2O3 content higher than 89 wt% The spinel phase of these ferrospheres includes Fevv3+(B) sites with a Ca2+ tetrahedral cation and an octahedral cation vacancy among the nearest neighbors. A linear correlation between the yield of C-2-hydrocarbons (ethane and ethylene) and the content of such sites was established, thus indicating that their electrophilic oxygen species participate in selective CH4 conversion to C2H6. Аннотация: We have studied magnetic nanoparticles of cobalt ferrite obtained by the extraction-pyrolysis method in a mesoporous silicon dioxide (MSM-41) molecular sieve matrix. The X-ray diffraction data show evidence for the formation of CoFe(2)O(4) particles with a coherent scattering domain size of similar to 40 nm. Measurements of the magnetization curves showed that powders consisting of these nanoparticles are magnetically hard materials with a coercive field of H (c)(4.2 K) = 9.0 kOe and H (c)(300 K) = 1.8 kOe and a reduced remanent magnetization of M (r)/M (s)(4.2 K) = 0.83 and M (r)/M (s)(300 K) = 0.49. The shape of the low-temperature (4.2 K) magnetization curves is adequately described in terms of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for randomly oriented single-domain particles with a cubic magnetic anisotropy.

Аннотация: The compound sulfides EuLnCuS3 (Ln = Nd and Sm) were obtained for the first time. Their crystal structures were determined from X-ray powder diffraction data. The crystals of both compounds are orthorhombic (space group Pnma). The compound EuNdCuS3 is isostructural with BaLaCuS3; the unit cell parameters are a = 11.0438(2) Å, b = 4.0660(1) Å, c = 11.4149(4) Å. The compound EuSmCuS3 is isostructural with Eu2CuS3; the unit cell parameters are a = 10.4202(2) Å, b = 3.9701(1) Å, c = 12.8022(2) Å.

Аннотация: High-T-c superconductors with CuO2 layers, manganites La1-xSrxMnO3 and cobaltites LaCoO3 present several mysteries in their physical properties. Most of them are believed to come from the strongly-correlated nature of these materials. From the theoretical viewpoint, there are many hidden rocks in making the consistent description of the band structure and low-energy physics starting from the Fermi-liquid approach. Here, we discuss the alternative method - multielectron approach to the electronic structure calculations for the Mott insulators - called LDA + GTB (local density approximation + generalized tight-binding) method. Its origin is a straightforward generalization of the Hubbard perturbation theory in the atomic limit and the multiband p - d Hamiltonian with the parameters calculated within LDA. We briefly discuss the method and focus on its applications to cuprates, manganites and cobaltites.

Аннотация: We report a study of the magnetodynamics of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles with an average diameter of ~6 nm. Hysteresis loops were measured under quasi-static conditions and in pulse fields with amplitudes H0 of up to 130 kOe and for durations τP of 8 and 16 ms. The growth of coercivity Hc observed with an increase in the magnetic field variation rate dH/dt (determined by the values of H0 and τP) and the reduction of Hc with temperature is ascribed to the superparamagnetic effect. The proposed theoretical model explains the observed dependences fairly well. Notably, the effective magnetic anisotropy constant obtained exceeds the value for bulk crystals and might be indicative of the contribution of surface magnetic anisotropy.
