Аннотация: Cascade of phase transitions in GdFe3(BO3)(4) at 156, 37, and 9 K has been detected by specific heat measurements and further studied by Raman scattering and Nd3+ spectroscopic probe method. A weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K is followed by a second-order antiferromagnetic ordering phase transition at 37 K and a first-order spin-reorientational phase transition at 9 K. Аннотация: The temperature dependence of the static magnetization of polycrystalline rare-earth cobaltite GdCoO3 is measured in the temperature range 2-800 K. The magnetic behaviors of GdCoO3 and Gd3+ are found to be different at temperatures above room temperature, which is caused by the appearance of a contribution from Co3+ ions at high temperatures. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of GdCoO3 is determined by the magnetization of rare-earth gadolinium ions and the additional paramagnetic contribution induced by the thermally excited magnetic terms of Co3+ ions. The LDA + GTB method is used to calculate the electronic structure of GdCoO3 in the temperature range 0-300 K with allowance for strong electron correlations. The energy spectrum of GdCoO3 is found to have intragap states that decrease the dielectric gap width with increasing temperature.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of ferroborate single crystals with substituted compositions Nd1−xDyxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0.15, 0.25) with competing exchange Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe interactions are investigated. For each composition, we observed a spontaneous spin-reorientation transition from the easy-axis to the easy-plane state and step anomalies on the magnetization curves for the spin-flop transition induced by a magnetic field B | c. The measured parameters and effects are interpreted using a unified theoretical approach based on the molecular field approximation and on calculations performed in the crystal-field model for the rare-earth ion. The experimental temperature dependences of the initial magnetic susceptibility from T = 2 K to T = 300 K, anomalies on the magnetization curves for B | c in fields up to 1.8 T, and their evolution with temperature, as well as temperature and field dependences of magnetization in fields up to 9 T are described. In the interpretation of experimental data, the crystal-field parameters in trigonal symmetry for the rare-earth subsystem are determined, as well as the parameters of Nd-Fe and Dy-Fe exchange interactions.

Аннотация: The Y(1-x) Ce (x) Ba2Cu3O7 system with low cerium concentrations has been synthesized. The cerium solubility limit measured using x-ray powder diffraction analysis is about 2.4 at. %. The temperature dependences of the magnetization M(T) are measured for samples cooled in a magnetic field (FC) and in a zero field (ZFC). The difference between the magnetizations M-ZFC-M-FC at 77.4 K, which is proportional to the pinning potential, passes through a maximum at x = 0.0156. This concentration corresponds to the average distance (equal to eight lattice constants) between the impurity ions in the plane of the rare-earth elements, which is comparable to the diameter of Abrikosov vortices in YBa2Cu3O7.

Аннотация: A coordinated investigation of the magnetic and electrical properties of polycrystalline cobalt oxide compounds CdCoO3, Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3, and Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3 is carried out. Undoped GdCoO3 reveals a low conductivity; a magnetic moment of 7.4 mu(B) per molecule, which is less than the theoretical value for the Gd3+ ion; and an asymptotic Curie temperature of -6 K. Doping GdCoO3 with barium and strontium to substitution of 10 at. % Gd brings about an increase in the conductivity and magnetic transitions at T = 300 K for Gd0.9Ba0.1CoO3 and T = 170 K for Gd0.9Sr0.1CoO3. The magnetization anomalies imply the formation of magnetic clusters. The behavior of the electrical conductivity at high temperatures suggests a variable activation energy. At low temperatures, Mott hopping conduction sets in.

Аннотация: We present a study of a Ho0.5Nd0.5Fe3(BO3)4 single crystal aiming at understanding the roles of each magnetic sublattices in magnetic transitions at low temperatures. The crystal structure is determined to have the R32 symmetry in whole studied temperature range but the crystal appears to be racemic. Element selective magnetic properties studied with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the L2,3-edges of Ho and Nd, and at the Fe K-edge at T = 3 K under magnetic fields of ±17 T are compared with the results of macroscopic magnetization measurements in pure and substituted crystals. All three magnetic sublattices are shown to be strongly coupled and to undergo a spin-reorientation transition when magnetic field is applied along the trigonal c-axis. On the contrary, when magnetic field is applied in the ab-plane only the holmium atoms exhibit a sizeable magnetization jump. This result allows us to conclude that the spin-flop transitions observed in macroscopic magnetization curves and associated anomalies of electric polarization are due to the Ho3+ magnetic moment reorientation.

Аннотация: The behavior of the elastic moduli and sound absorption in a PrFe(3)(BO(3))(4) single crystal at low temperatures is studied. A transition of the magnetic subsystem into an antiferromagnetically ordered state is manifested in the temperature behavior of the sound velocities and absorption. The characteristic behavior of the elastic properties of PrFe(3)(BO(3))(4) in an external magnetic field is observed. A phenomenological theory that gives a qualitative description of the observed features is constructed. It is proposed that a weak magnetic moment exists in the crystal. Аннотация: The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the static magnetization of the polycrystalline rare-earth cobaltites GdCoO3 and SmCoO3 have been measured. It is shown that, below room temperature, the magnetization of both compounds derives primarily from the rare-earth ion paramagnetism. The GdCoO3 and SmCoO3 compounds have been found to differ substantially in magnetic behavior, which can be traced to differences in their electronic shell structures. The magnetic behavior of GdCoO3 is close to that of an array of free Gd3+ ions, whereas in SmCoO3 the deviation from the free-ion properties is very large because of the Sm3+ ground state being crystal-field split. Van Vleck magnetic susceptibility measurements of SmCoO3 suggest that the splitting is similar to 10 K.
