Аннотация: Optical absorption spectra of trigonal crystal TbFe3(BO3)(4) have been studied in the region of F-7(6) - D-5(4) transition in Tb3+ ion depending on temperature (2-220 K) and on magnetic field (0-60 kOe). Splitting of the Tb3+ excited states, both under the influence of the external magnetic field and effective exchange field of the Fe-sublattice, have been determined. Land, factors of the excited states have been found. Stepwise splitting of one of the absorption lines has been discovered in the region of the Fe-sublattice magnetic ordering temperature. This is shown to be due to the abrupt change of equilibrium geometry of the local Tb3+ ion environment only in the excited state of the Tb3+ ion. In general, the magnetic ordering is accompanied by temperature variations of the Tb3+ local environment in the excited states. The crystal field splitting components have been identified. In particular, it has been shown that the ground state (in D (3) symmetry approximation) consists of two close singlet states of A (1) and A (2) type, which are split and magnetized by effective exchange field of the Fe-sublattice. Orientations of magnetic moments of the excited electronic states relative to that of the ground state have been experimentally determined in the magnetically ordered state of the crystal. A pronounced shift of one of absorption lines has been observed in the vicinity of the TbFe3(BO3)(4) structural phase transition. The temperature interval of coexistence of the phases is about 3 K.

antiferromagnet -- resonance -- multiferroics -- commensurate-incommensurate phase
Аннотация: The AFMR spectra of the NdFe3(BO3)(4) crystal are measured in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. It is found that by the type of its magnetic anisotropy the compound is an easy-plane antiferromagnet with a weak anisotropy in the basal plane. The effective magnetic parameters are determined: anisotropy fields H-a1 = 1.14 kOe and H-a2 = 60 kOe and magnetic excitation gaps Delta v(1) = 101.9 GHz and Delta v(2) = 23.8 GHz. It is shown that commensurate-incommensurate phase transition causes a shift in resonance field and a considerable change in absorption line width. At temperatures below 4.2 K nonlinear regimes of AFMR excitation at low microwave power levels are observed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

magnetic circular dichroism -- magneto-optical activity -- rare earth glasses
Аннотация: The absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of f-f transitions (6)H(15/2) -> (6)F(3/2), (6)F(5/2), (6)(F(7/2) + H(5/2)) and (6)(F(9/2) + H(7/2)) in Dy(3+) ion were studied in the glasses: Dy(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) and Dy(2)O(3)-La(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3)-B(2)O(3)-SiO(2)-GeO(2) with different concentrations of Dy(3+) ions in temperature range 100-300 K. :Basing on this data, absolute values and temperature dependences of the paramagnetic magneto-optical activity (MOA) of the transitions were determined. The origin of the MOA of f-f transitions was analyzed with the help of two models. In the first model, MOA is considered as a consequence of admixture of states with opposite parity by odd components of crystal field. The second approach is based on the Judd-Ofelt theory. The same f-f transitions reveal different values and temperature dependences in different glasses, what testifies to a different symmetry of the nearest environment of Dy(3+) ions in these glasses.

magnetic nanoparticles -- oxide glasses -- faraday rotation -- magnetic circular dichroism
Аннотация: Faraday rotation (FR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of nanocomposite structures based on potassium-aluminum-germanium-boron glasses co-doped with Fe and rare earth (RE) or Y+Bi oxides have been studied. Formation of magnetic nanoparticles as a result of the glass heat treatment ensures them magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of magnetically ordered substances. At the same time, glasses keep transparence in visual spectral range owing to low paramagnetic oxides concentration. FR and MCD spectra of the heat treated glasses are shown to be very close to those of gamma-Fe(2)O(3) and practically independent of the RE element nature for the light wave energies lower than 22000 cm(-1). For higher energies, the MCD spectrum shape depends strongly an RE what evidences the different origin of magneto-optical effects in two spectral ranges.

spin waves -- elastic waves -- magnetoelastic coupling -- inhomogeneities -- self-consistent approximation -- dynamic susceptibility
Аннотация: The interaction between two wave fields of different nature that are caused by rms fluctuations of the coupling parameter between these fields in media with zero-mean coupling parameter is. considered. Taking into consideration the multiple scattering processes of waves on the inhomogeneities leads to the results considerably different from those that have been obtained for the same situation in the Bourret approximation earlier [4,5]. Instead of the degeneration removal of frequencies in the wave spectrum and the appearance of two resonance peaks in the dynamic susceptibility at the intersection of the initial dispersion laws, the sharp broadening of the self-mode peak has to be observed. The consideration is done by the example of magnetoelastic waves in zero-mean magnetostrictive media.

waves -- superlattices -- inhomogeneities -- dynamic susceptibility -- dos
Аннотация: The dynamic susceptibility and the one-dimensional density of states (DOS) of an initially sinusoidal superlattice (SL) with simultaneous presence of two-dimensional (2D) phase inhomogeneities that simulate the deformations of the interfaces between the SL's layers and three-dimensional (3D) amplitude inhomogeneities of the layer material of the SL were investigated. An analytical expression for the averaged Green's function of the sinusoidal SL with 2D phase inhomogeneities was obtained in the Bourret approximation. It was shown that the effect of increasing asymmetry of heights of the dynamic susceptibility peaks at the edge of the Brillouin zone of the SL, which was found in [6] at increasing the rms fluctuations of 2D inhomogeneities, also takes place at increasing the correlation wave number of such inhomogeneities. It was also shown that The increase of the tins fluctuations of 3D amplitude inhomogeneities in the superlattice with 2D phase inhomogeneities leads to the suppression of the asymmetry effect and to the decrease of the depth of the DOS gap.

micromagnetic simulation -- magnetization dynamics -- magnetic susceptibility -- ferromagnetic resonance -- nanocrystalline film -- soft magnetic film
Аннотация: Two numerical micromagnetic methods most suitable for calculation of the high frequency magnetic susceptibility of nanocrystalline thin films were considered in detail. The methods are based on the Landau–Lifshitz equation, linearized around the equilibrium state leading to an eigenvalue problem or solved using an undetermined coefficients technique. An analysis and estimation of an efficiency of the methods were carried out. Several conclusions about their advantages and shortcomings, as well as specifics of their practical application were drawn.
