Аннотация: A transition of the field dependence of the electrical resistivity from a square law (similar to H-2) above T-c to a linear function (similar to H) below T-c is observed in the degenerate ferromagnetic semiconductor HgCr2Se4(n). Together with the large negative magnetoresistance, these magnetoelectric effects correspond to effects observed in the perovskite-type oxides La1-xCaxMnOdelta. Inasmuch as the undoped semiconductor HgCr2Se4 is a ferromagnet with approximately the same critical temperature as the doped semiconductor and in view of the total lack of data on the Jahn-Teller effect in this compound, we infer that our results cast doubt on existing hypotheses (polaron and binary exchange) regarding the origin of the giant magnetoresistance in La1-xCaxMnOdelta. Impurity sd scattering is discussed as a possible magnetoresistance mechanism for both compounds. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-7834(99)01710-4].

Аннотация: A study is reported of the structural, magnetic, and magneto-optic properties of Mn/Dy/Bi films obtained by multilayer technology. The maximum Kerr rotation angle in such films is shown to be theta(k) = 2.25 degrees. Possible reasons for such a large Kerr effect enhancement are considered, namely, an increase in the 6p - 3d transition probability caused by symmetry distortion, polarization of the Bi6p band, and a change in the density of states near the Fermi level. The latter reason has been analyzed by simulating the electronic structure of Mn/Dy/Bi through superposition of Dy levels on the MnBi band structure. This approach has revealed possible additional transitions which may be induced by the presence of a Dy buffer and could contribute to the Kerr magneto-optic effect. Аннотация: Solid-phase reactions taking place in Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) and Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) film systems under conditions of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) are investigated. In both systems, SHS products exhibit the single CoAl superstructure, which epitaxially grows on the MgO(001) surface in the Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) structures and has a fine-dispersed disordered structure in the Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) films. It appears that the difference in the reagent structure has an effect on the energy of activation but does not change the SHS initiation temperature and the temperature at which the initial phase involved in the reaction products nucleates. It is shown that the SHS initiation temperature in the Al/beta-Co/MgO(001) and Al/alpha-Co/MgO(001) systems coincides with the temperature of CoAl superstructure ordering. Аннотация: The classical solid-phase reaction between Fe2O3 and Al layers in thin films is initiated. It is shown that, in the reaction products, Fe granulated films are formed in the Al2O3 nonconducting matrix. Analysis of the reaction equation demonstrates that the volume fraction of iron in the granulated films is less than the percolation threshold. This determines the magnetic properties of iron clusters in a superparamagnetic state. It is assumed that the nanocrystalline microstructure exists in thin films after solid-phase reactions proceeding under conditions of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. Аннотация: The solid-phase synthesis of the Co(7)Sm(2) and Co(17)Sm(2) magnetically hard phases in Co/Sm/Co(110) epitaxial film systems has been experimentally investigated. The Co(7)Sm(2) phase is first formed at the Sm/Co interface at a relatively low (similar to 300 degrees C) temperature. As the annealing temperature increases to similar to 450 degrees C, the Co(17)Sm(2)(110) phase grows epitaxially on the Co(7)Sm(2)(110) phase. The saturation magnetization and biaxial anisotropy constant in the samples vary with the formation of the Co(7)Sm(2) and Co(17)Sm(2) phases. Investigations of the solidphase synthesis in the nanofilms reveal the existence of a new structure phase transition at 300 degrees C in the Co-Sm system with a high cobalt content.

Аннотация: Solid-phase synthesis of solid solutions in the epitaxial Cu/Ni(001) bilayer film systems of compositions 3Cu: 1Ni, 1Cu: 1Ni, and 1Cu: 3Ni has been studied using the X-ray diffraction methods. The saturation magnetization and the magnetic crystallographic anisotropy constant on nickel vary in accordance with the solid solution formation. The initiation temperature of the solid solutions is about 350 A degrees C and is independent of the Ni: Cu layer thickness ratio. The solid-phase synthesis of the solid solutions is presumably attributed to the transport of the Cu atoms to the epitaxial Ni(001) layer. It is found that the solid-phase synthesis in the Cu/Ni bilayer nanofilms and multilayers is determined by the spinodal decomposition in the Cu-Ni system.

Аннотация: The solid-phase synthesis in epitaxial Mn/Fe(001) bilayer film systems with 24 at % of Mn has been shown to start at a temperature of 220A degrees C with the formation of a gamma-austenite lattice and the Mn and Fe films react completely under annealing to 600A degrees C. In the sample cooling process after annealing below 220A degrees C, the gamma austenite undergoes a martensitic transformation to an oriented a(100) martensite. When the annealing temperature is increased above 600A degrees C, Mn atoms migrate from the gamma-lattice, which becomes unstable, and the film is partially again transformed to the epitaxial Fe(001) layer. The solid-phase synthesis in Mn/Fe(001) bilayer nanofilms and multilayers is assumingly determined by the inverse epsilon - gamma martensitic transformation in the Mn-Fe system. The existence of a new low-temperature (similar to 220A degrees C) structure transition in the Mn-Fe system with a high iron content is assumed.

Аннотация: The effect of an inert Co layer (0, 210, 480 nm) on the chemical interaction between Cu and Au in Au/beta-Co(001)/Cu(001) epitaxial films has been investigated by X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, photoelectron spectroscopy, and magnetic structure measurements. Mixing at interfaces in Cu/beta-Co(001) and Au/beta-Co(001) bilayer films has not been revealed up to a temperature of 600 C. The solid-state synthesis of ordered CuAu| and CuAu|| phases occurs through the Co inert buffer layer in Au/beta-Co(001)/Cu(001) trilayer film systems with an increase in the annealing temperature. The initiation temperatures of the CuAu| and CuAu|| phases increase only slightly with the thickness of the Co buffer layer. The assumption of the long range of the chemical interaction between Cu and Au through the chemically inert Co layer is justified using the performed investigations.

Аннотация: Atomic and electronic structures of Goldberg-type silicon quantum dots and their endohedral erbium complexes were studied using ab initio and plane wave pseudopotential density functional and Moller-Plesset many-body perturbation theories. During atomic structure optimizations, the erbium ions occupy mass centers inside the central hollows of quantum dots of different symmetries. It was found that strong electron correlations within the Er 4f shell taken into account by empirical pseudopotential and post-Hartree-Fock perturbation approaches are responsible for strong binding of Er ions to quantum dots. We elucidate the effects of symmetry and discuss theoretical results in comparison to available experimental data,

Аннотация: Experimental values of the Lorentz tensor components L-j for uniaxial quasi-two dimensional "soft matter" objects on substrates (bilayer lipid membranes, multilayer Langmuir films, smectics A, hexatic smectics B, submicron films of discotics Col(hd), micron anisotropic films of liquid-crystal comblike polymers and macromolecular polymers, submicron films of conjugated conductive polymers), freely suspended sub-micron films of smectics A, and uniaxially stretched micron films of conjugated conductive polymers have been determined using dispersion of refractive indices in the visible range. The dependences of the components L-j on the type of orientation (axial, planar) of uniaxial molecules (structural units of the film) with respect to the optical axis of the film, the film thickness, the substrate type, the chemical structure of molecules, and their long-range orientational order are established. It is revealed that the smectic A-hexatic B phase transition and two-dimensional crystallization of the smectic layer lead to changes in the components L-j due to the change in the orientational ordering of molecules as a result of the relation between the orientational and hexatic order parameters. All the above objects are characterized by isotropization of the Lorentz tensor L and the local-field tensor f with a simultaneous decrease in the birefringence of the sample and in the anisotropy of the molecular polarizability due to the change in the electronic structure of molecules. The correction for the anisotropy of the local-field tensor f to the orientational order parameter or the anisotropy of the molecular polarizability increases. The existing model approaches to calculating the components L-j for the objects under consideration are compared with the experimental data.

The correlation between the components L (j) and the measurable parameter eta has been revealed and the analytical dependence L (j) (eta) has been derived in agreement with the experiment.

Аннотация: Using the data on dispersion of refractive indices in the visible region, the experimental values of the components L-j of the Lorentz tensor have been obtained for uniaxial (crystalline, oriented on a substrate, and stretched) films of conjugated polymers from nanometer to micrometer thicknesses. Аннотация: Fused silica plates have been implanted with 40 keV Co+ or Ni+ ions to high doses in the range of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2), and magnetic properties of the implanted samples have been studied with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique supplemented by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The high-dose implantation with 3d-ions results in the formation of cobalt and nickel metal nanoparticles in the irradiated subsurface layer of the SiO2 matrix. Co and Ni nanocrystals with hexagonal close packing and face-centered cubic structures have a spherical shape and the sizes of 4-5 nm (for cobalt) and 6-14 nm (for nickel) in diameter. Room-temperature FMR signals from ensembles of Co and Ni nanoparticles implanted in the SiO2 matrix exhibit an out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that is typical for thin magnetic films. The dose and temperature dependences of FMR spectra have been analyzed using the Kittel formalism, and the effective magnetization and g-factor values have been obtained for Co- and Ni-implanted samples. Nonsymmetric FMR line shapes have been fitted by a sum of two symmetrical curves. The dependences of the magnetic parameters of each curve on the implantation dose and temperature are presented.

Аннотация: A methods of obtaining polycrystalline CoCrFeO4 films based on solid-phase reactions in Cr2O3/Co/Fe layer structures in the regimes of isothermal annealing and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is described. The magneto-optical properties of the obtained films have been studied. It is established that the spectra of magneto-optical characteristics depend on the solid-phase reaction regime and synthesis temperature. The Faraday rotation angle exhibits a local maximum (2 theta(F) = 5 deg/mu m) at a wave-length of 630 nm.

Аннотация: The band structure, spectral intensity, and position of the Fermi level in doped p-type La1-xMx2+ MnO3 manganites (M = Sr, Ca, Ba) is analyzed using the LDA + GBT method for calculating the electronic structure of systems with strong electron correlations, taking into account antiferro-orbital ordering and using the Kugel-Khomskii ideas and real spin S = 2. The results of the ferromagnetic phase reproduce the state of a spin half-metal with 100% spin polarization at T = 0, when the spectrum is of the metal type for a quasiparticle with one spin projection and of the dielectric type for the other. It is found that the valence band becomes approximately three times narrower upon a transition to the paramagnetic phase. For the paramagnetic phase, metal properties are observed because the Fermi level is located in the valence band for any nonzero x. The dielectrization effect at the Curie temperature is possible and must be accompanied by filling of d(x) orbitals upon doping. The effect itself is associated with strong electron correlations, and a complex structure of the top of the valence band is due to the Jahn-Teller effect in cubic materials. Аннотация: The solid-state synthesis of magnetically soft phase FePd3 in epitaxial Pd(0 0 1)/Fe(0 0 1)/MgO(0 0 1) film systems was studied experimentally. The system had a Fe to Pd ratio of 1:3. An increase to 450 °C leads to the formation of three variants of ordered L10-FePd crystallites. At 500 °C, the solid-state reaction of unreacted Pd with L10-FePd crystallites initiates the growth of an ordered epitaxial L12-FePd3(0 0 1) layer. When annealing at 650 °С, a gradual disordering is observed. The magnetic anisotropy (K1=−2.0×103 erg/cm3) and the saturation magnetization (MS=650 emu/cm3) of the disordered FePd3 phase were determined.

Аннотация: Results of an X-ray diffraction study as well as magnetic and electrical measurements of the solid-state reactions in Ge/Mn polycrystalline films of an 80/20 atomic composition have been presented. It has been shown that the ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 phase is formed first on the Ge/Mn interface after annealing at similar to 120A degrees C. The further increase in the annealing temperature to 300A degrees C leads to the beginning of the synthesis of the Mn11Ge8 phase, which becomes dominating at 400A degrees C. The existence of new structural transitions in the Mn-Ge system in the region of similar to 120 and similar to 300A degrees C has been predicted on the basis of the presented results and results obtained earlier when studying solid-state reactions in different film structures. The supposition about the general chemical mechanisms of the synthesis of the Mn5Ge3 and Mn11Ge8 phases during the solid-state reactions in the Ge/Mn films of the 80/20 atomic composition and the phase separation in Ge (x) Mn1 - x (x 0.95) diluted semiconductors has been substantiated.

Аннотация: The geometrical characteristics of a 2D SiC monolayer on Mg(0001) and MgO(111) plates regarded as potential materials for growing two-dimensional silicon carbide were studied. The most favorable positions of the atoms of 2D SiC on the substrates were determined. In the 2D SiC/Mg(0001) system, unlike in 2D SiC/MgO(111), the deviation of the carbon atom from the silicon carbide monolayer was insignificant (0.08 ). Consequently, magnesium can be used as a substrate for growing two-dimensional silicon carbide. The use of MgO(111) is not recommended because of a significant distortion of the 2D SiC surface.

Аннотация: Indium-oxide films are synthesized by the autowave-oxidation reaction. It is shown that, upon exposure to optical radiation, the resistance of the films sharply decreases and the maximal relative change in the resistance is 52% at room temperature. Two resistance relaxation rates after termination of the irradiation, 15 Omega s(-1) during the first 30 s and 7 Omega s(-1) over the remaining time, are determined. The data of infrared spectroscopy of the films show that exposure to optical radiation induces a 2.4% decrease in the transmittance at a wavelength of 6.3 mu m. It is found that, after termination of the irradiation, the transmittance gradually increases with a rate of 0.006% s(-1). It is suggested that photoreduction is the dominant mechanism responsible for changes in the electrical and optical properties of the In2O3 films.
