Аннотация: The simple lattice and magnetic structure, the high Neel temperature, the narrow antiferromagnetic resonance line of FeBO3, and the narrow electron paramagnetic resonance line of its isostructural diamagnetic analogs MBO3:Fe3+(M = Ga, In, Sc, Lu) make iron borate unique for investigations and applications. Iron borate is a model crystal for numerous experimental and theoretical studies, including spin crossovers and metallization at megabar pressures and many-electron effects in optics and X-ray spectroscopy. The recent works dealing with the investigation of the properties of FeBO(3)are reviewed.

Аннотация: Crystals of a diamagnetic PbGaBO4 analog containing a small amount (about 0.5 at %) of Fe3+ ions are grown. The single-ion EPR spectra of Fe3+ in PbGa1-xFexBO4 single crystals are analyzed with allowance for a crystal structure. The existence of four magnetically nonequivalent positions of Fe3+ ions with different local anisotropy axis directions has been confirmed. The parameters of the spin Hamiltonian written in the approximation of the local orthorhombic symmetry of a paramagnetic center are determined. The values of single-ion anisotropy constants, which are unusually high for S ions, is shown to be caused by a strong distortion of the ligand environment of Fe3+ ions. The single-ion contribution to the energy of the total magnetic anisotropy of a magnetically concentrated PbGaBO4 crystal is estimated. Two-ion mechanisms of the Fe–Fe interaction anisotropy are assumed to play a dominant role in the formation of magnetic anisotropy in a magnetically concentrated crystal.

Аннотация: A model describing the second-order phase transition with respect to the magnetoelastic coupling parameter from the anti ferromagnetic (AFM) to the singlet state in a two-dimensional quantum magnet on a square lattice is proposed. The spectrum of elementary excitations in the singlet and AFM phases is calculated using an atomic representation, and the evolution of transverse and longitudinal branches of this spectrum is studied in the vicinity of the transition point. It is established that the AFM to singlet phase transition is related to softening of the longitudinal branch of oscillations. In the singlet phase, the gap plays the role of a parameter characterizing the distance to the phase transition point. It is shown that the spectrum of transverse oscillations in the AFM phase corresponds to the Goldstone boson. Based on an analysis of the stability of the spectrum of elementary excitations, a phase diagram is constructed that determines the regions of the existence of phases with plaquette-deformed lattices.

Аннотация: Cholesteric droplets dispersed in a polymer with homeotropic surface anchoring are studied. A director configuration with the bipolar distribution of the axis of the helix is formed in droplets. The untwisting of the helical structure (i.e., an increase in the pitch of the helix) is experimentally observed at a decrease in the size of droplets. This dependence is analyzed for liquid crystal droplets with various concentrations of the chiral addition. A proposed empirical relation describes well the correlation of the helix pitch and the size of droplets in the studied samples.

Аннотация: Two phases, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic, were shown by the magnetic resonance method to coexist below the temperature T-C in La0.7Pb0.3MnO3 single crystals exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance. The magnetic resonance spectra were studied in the frequency range 10-78 GHz. The specific features in the behavior of the spectral parameters were observed to be the strongest at the temperatures corresponding to the maximum magnetoresistance in the crystals. The concentration ratios of the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases in the samples were found to be sensitive to variations in temperature and external magnetic field. This behavior suggests realization of the electronic phase separation mechanism in the system under study. (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The results of the study of transport properties (temperature dependences of resistivity and critical current, current-voltage characteristics) of two-phase composites on the basis of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) produced by fast baking technique and modelling networks of Josephson-type weak links are reported. Non-superconducting ingredients with different magnetic structures, insulators and normal metals, function as barriers between HTSC crystallites. Besides strong suppression of superconducting properties in HTSC composites with magnetic barriers, anomalous behavior of temperature dependences of resistivity below T-c of HTSC grains have been observed and investigated.

Аннотация: Composites simulating a network of weak metallic links and consisting of a classic 1-2-3 HTSC and a BaPbO3 metal oxide with incorporated Sn, Ni, and Fe impurities have been prepared. Experimental resistivity, magnetic, and Mossbauer studies of the BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3) nonsuperconducting components are presented. The transport properties of the HTSC + BaPb(0.9)Met(0.1)O(3) composites have been investigated. The superconducting properties of the composites are observed to be suppressed, both when the carrier mean free path in nonsuperconducting components with tin impurities decreases, and as a result of an additional interaction of the magnetic moments of (Fe, Ni) impurities with the spins of supercurrent carriers. The experimental temperature dependences of the composite critical current are analyzed in terms of the de Gennes theory for the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor structures. Аннотация: We have studied the resistivity and thermoelectromotive force (thermo emf) in a temperature range of T = 80-1000 K, the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization in a temperature range of T= 4.2-300 K at an external magnetic field of up to 70 kOe, and the structural characteristics of CoxMn1 - S-x sulfides (0 <= x <= 0.4). Anomalies in the transport properties of these compounds have been found in the temperature intervals Delta T-1 = 200-270 K and Delta T-2 = 530-670 K and at T-3 similar to T-N. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and resistivity, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, exhibit hysteresis. In the domain of magnetic ordering at temperatures below the Neel temperature (TN), the anti ferromagnetic CoxMn1 - xS sulfides possess a spontaneous magnetic moment that is explained using a model of the orbital ordering of electrons in the t(2g) bands. The influence of the cobalt-ion-induced charge ordering on the transport and magnetic properties of sulfides has been studied. The calculated values of the temperatures corresponding to the maxima of charge susceptibility, which are related to a competition between the on-site Coulomb interaction of holes in various subbands and their weak hybridization, agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + Y3Fe5O12 composites with different volume ratios of the starting components were synthesized. The composites model an S-F-S Josephson junction network, where S stands for a superconductor and F, for a ferrimagnet. A study of the transport characteristics of the composites revealed that the temperature behavior of the electrical resistivity rho(T) below the superconducting transition point T-C is different in two regions separated by a temperature T-m. Below T-m, the current-voltage characteristics of the composites are nonlinear, while in the interval from T-C to T-m the values of rho(T) do not depend on the transport current j and magnetic field H. This behavior of rho(T, j ) and rho(T, H) is assigned to specific features of the tunneling of superconducting carriers through the ferrimagnetic layers separating HTSC grains in the composite. Magnetic measurements showed the diamagnetic response of HTSC grains to be lower in composites with a ferrimagnet. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The thermodynamic stability of different conformers of the polymeric sandwich structures of metalloporphyrins (MeP) is studied by means of quantum chemistry. The possibility of forming stable layered BaP, SrP, ScP, YP, and ZrP structures with shielded and retarded conformation is demonstrated. Shielded conformers are preferable in the case of SrP, BaP, and ScP complexes, while retarded conformers are most advantageous for YP and ZrP complexes. Based on the results from calculating the electron structure of the investigated compounds, we find that SrP and BaP are semiconductors and ScP, YP, and ZrP are electrical conductors.

Аннотация: The thermal expansion along the a, b and c axes of a (NH4)(2)NbOF5 crystal was measured from 120 to 300 K. Anomalies of alpha(T) associated with previously reported phase transitions Cmc2(1) -> C-2 -> I a were observed along all directions at T-1 = 259.3 K and T-2 = 220.5 K. The analysis of thermal expansion and heat capacity in the frame of the Pippard relations has permitted us to determine the uniaxial pressure derivatives of the transition temperatures dT/d sigma(i). The T-sigma(i) phase diagrams have shown a tendency for the intermediate phase to disappear at high stress along the b and c axes. Intensive and extensive barocaloric effects near the structural phase transitions were found to be comparable with the caloric parameters of some ferroelectrics, ferromagnets and antiferromagnets.

Аннотация: The parameters of equations of state of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric phases of the γ′-Fe4N, ɛ-Fe3N0.75, ɛ-Fe3N, ɛ-Fe3N1.25, and ɛ-Fe3N1.5 iron nitrides in a pressure range up to 500 GPa have been determined using ab initio calculations. The points of the sharp drop and disappearance of the magnetic moment on iron atoms have been found. It has been shown that certain changes in the magnetic moment are accompanied by a change in the volume of a unit cell of the nitrides. The calculated parameters of equations of state demonstrate that the compressibility of both magnetic and nonmagnetic iron nitrides decreases monotonically with an increase in the content of nitrogen.

Аннотация: The stability of the B and N atomic vacancies and divacancies in an h-BN monolayer deformed by 2 and 4% along one of the axes has been investigated. It has been established that the N atomic vacancies are most stable; their concentration is insignificant and does not affect the properties of white graphene. The number of vacancies depends on the mobility of N and B atoms on the layer surface; therefore, the probability of recombination with the vacancies has been estimated. It has been revealed that the energy barrier for the migration of the B and N adatoms is about 0.23 and 1.23 eV, respectively. In view of such a low barrier for the B adatom, this type of adatoms will quite rapidly move over the surface and recombine with vacancies, in contrast to the N adatoms. Therefore, only nitrogen atom vacancies can exist in the h-BN monolayer grown by the methods, where the adatoms could possibly appear on the surface.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties of vacancies in 2D hexagonal structures-graphene and 2D-SiC and h-BN monolayers-have been studied. It has been found that a local magnetic moment exists in all listed systems in the presence of vacancies. However, in 2D hexagonal silicon carbide, the local magnetic moment appears only in the presence of silicon vacancy. In addition, the effect of the distance between vacancies in a monolayer on transitions between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states has been revealed.

Аннотация: The influence of boron and nitrogen vacancies and divacancies on the electronic structure of a hexagonal boron nitride h-BN monolayer is studied. In the presence of vacancies in the structure, the introduced states appear in the forbidden band. The position of an introduced state with respect to the upper occupied level and the lower vacant level depends on deformation. Calculations show that, depending on the defect type and the magnitude of the applied deformation, the introduced state can be both localized and not localized on atoms surrounding the defect. When the state is localized in the system, the inhomogeneous distribution of the spin density is observed, resulting in the appearance of the magnetic moment in the system.

Аннотация: The intermetallic compound Mg2Ni as a potential material for hydrogen storage has been investigated theoretically. The sorption and diffusion of a hydrogen atom in the bulk and on the surface of this material, as well as the step-by-step process of dissociative chemisorption of a H-2 molecule on the surface, have been considered. The dependence of the sorption energy of atomic hydrogen on the structural characteristics of the intermetallic compound Mg2Ni has been analyzed.

Аннотация: The optical absorption spectra of iron borate (FeBO3) are measured at high pressures up to P = 82 GPa. A mechanism of suppression of strong electron correlations is proposed within the framework of the generalized tight binding method, which leads to the experimentally observed magnetic, electronic, and structural phase transitions. Taking into account peculiarities of the crystal structure of FeBO3 and the strong s-p hybridization of boron and oxygen, it is established that, as the distance between ions varies with increasing pressure, the crystal field parameter begins to play a decisive role in the electron transitions, while the influence of the d band broadening is negligibly small. Аннотация: The magnetization of cation-substituted CoxMn(1-x)S sulfides upon cooling in zero magnetic field and in a field in the temperature range 4-300 K has been measured and the resistance versus magnetic field (up to 10 kOe) dependences have been obtained. Magnetoresistance and temperature hysteresis of magnetization versus prehistory are found at the magnetic field H < 0.1 T and at T < 240 K. The interrelation between the magnetic and elastic subsystems of the CoxMn1-xS solid solutions has been established. A jump in the coefficient of thermal expansion is observed at the Neel temperature. The features of the physical properties are explained by orbital ordering. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: Magnetization of the cation-substituted CoxMn1-xS sulfides upon cooling in zero and 100 Oe magnetic fields at the temperatures 4-300 K has been measured. Permittivity of these materials at frequencies from 1 to 100 kHz in magnetic and dc electric fields in the 100-300 K temperature range has been determined. Change in the dielectric permittivity under an external magnetic field is found to have a maximum in the temperature ranges of T-1 similar to (110-120 K) and T-2 similar to (230-250 K). Formation of spontaneous magnetic moment and the rise of magnetic susceptibility are revealed at the same temperatures in the CoxMn1-xS solid solutions. Features of the magnetoelectric properties of the sulfides have been explained by orbital ordering.
