Аннотация: The capacitance and dielectric loss tangent of GdxMn1–xS (x ≤ 0.2) solid solutions have been measured at a frequency of 10 kHz without magnetic field and in a magnetic field of 8 kOe in the temperature range of 90–450 K. An increase in the permittivity and a dielectric loss maximum have been detected in the low-temperature region. It has been found that the temperature of the maximum of the imaginary part of the permittivity shifts to higher temperatures with increasing concentration. The magnetocapacitance effect has been revealed for two compositions. The dielectric loss has been described in the Debye model with “freezing” dipole moments and in the orbital-charge ordering model.

   FERROELECTRICITY

Аннотация: Resonance modes that are due to magnetic excitations in the exchange-coupled subsystems of rare-earth ions (R = Nd3+, Sm3+, and Gd3+) and Fe3+ ions have been detected in submillimeter transmission spectra (0.1-0.6 THz) of RFe3(BO3)(4) iron borate-multiferroic single crystals. The strong interaction between spin oscillations of the Fe and R subsystems has been revealed, which determines the behavior of the modes depending on the anisotropy of the exchange splitting of the ground doublet of the R ion. It has been shown that the intensities of coupled modes (contributions to the magnetic permeability) depend strongly on the difference between the g factors of Fe and R ions. This dependence makes it possible to determine the sign of the latter g factor. In particular, a noticeable intensity of exchange Nd modes in NdFe3(BO3)(4) is due to an increase in their contribution at g(perpendicular to,parallel to)(Nd) 0, while in GdFe3(BO3)(4) with g(Gd) approximate to g(Fe) approximate to 2, the Fe and Gd contributions compensate each other and the exchange (Gd) mode is not observed. In spite of the weak interaction of Sm ions with the magnetic field, SmFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits resonance modes, which are attributed to the excitation of Sm ions through the Fe subsystem. Аннотация: A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in HoAl3(BO3)(4). The polarization in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 mu C/m(2), which is significantly higher than reported values of linear magnetoelectric or even multiferroic compounds. The magnetostrictive effect is also measured and compared with the magnetoelectricity. The results show that spin-lattice coupling in HoAl3(BO3)(4) is extremely strong and that the magnetic field causes a large polar distortion of the ionic positions in the unit cell.

Аннотация: The colossal (more than threefold) decrease in the dielectric constant E in the easy-plane SmFe3(BO3)(4) ferroborate in a magnetic field of similar to 5 kOe applied in the basal ab plane of the crystal has been found. A close relation of this effect to anomalies in the field dependence of the electric polarization has been established. It has been shown that this magnetodielectric effect is due to the contribution to E from the electric susceptibility, which is related to the rotation of spins in the ab plane, arises in the region of the antiferromagnetic ordering T T (N) and electric polarization in the magnetic field has been proposed, taking into account the additional anisotropy in the basal plane induced by the magnetoelastic stresses.

Аннотация: We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)(4). Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd L-II,L-III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at T-N approximate to 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below T-N, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T approximate to 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at T-SR approximate to 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated similar to 45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

Аннотация: The phonon spectra, Born effective charges, and dielectric constants epsilon(infinity) for the square AlF3, square GaF3, and square InF3 crystals (where is a vacancy) have been calculated in terms of the generalized Gordon-Kim method. The calculated spectra of lattice vibrations contain no imaginary vibrational frequencies. This suggests the stability of the cubic phase of these compounds but contradicts the observable structural transition from cubic to rhombohedral phase. It is assumed that such a transition in the square AlF3, square GaF3, and square InF3 crystals is brought about by structural defects. The calculated spectrum of lattice vibrations of the "completely defective" crystal M square F-3 (M = Al, Ga, and In) indicates a strong instability of the cubic phase. Within the mean crystal approximation, the cubic phase of M-x M1 - xF3 crystals appears to be unstable at small x less than or equal to 0.05. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We report on the low-temperature magnetic properties of the DyScO3 perovskite, which were characterized by means of single crystal and powder neutron scattering, and by magnetization measurements. Below TN = 3.15 K, Dy3+ moments form an antiferromagnetic structure with an easy axis of magnetization lying in the ab plane. The magnetic moments are inclined at an angle of ∼ +/- 28 degrees to the b axis. We show that the ground-state Kramers doublet of Dy3+ is made up of primarily |+/- 15/2 ⟩ eigenvectors and well separated by a crystal field from the first excited state at E1 = 24.9 meV. This leads to an extreme Ising single-ion anisotropy, M⊥/M∥∼ 0.05. The transverse magnetic fluctuations, which are proportional to M⊥2/M∥2, are suppressed, and only moment fluctuations along the local Ising direction are allowed. We also found that the Dy-Dy dipolar interactions along the crystallographic c axis are two to four times larger than in-plane interactions.
